Critical Analysis of Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone
Presented by Yashfa Malik
◤
Harry Potter
and
The Philosopher's Stone
◤
Author
J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s
Stone, also called Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer’s Stone, the first novel in the
immensely popular Harry Potter series by
British writer J.K. Rowling.
Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, Rowling
was working as a researcher and
bilingual secretary for Amnesty
International in 1990 when she conceived
the idea for the Harry Potter series while
on a delayed train
from Manchester to London.
◤
Summary
▪ Harry Potter is a misfit in his family of adopted parents. His
family treats him as a slave. Harry soon comes to know that he
is living in a world of Witches and Warlocks. Harry receives a
letter from school of witchcraft and wizardry ( Hogwarts ). He
goes eventually only to find He is a celebrity. When harry got to
school he did expectably well. He was very good player at
Quiddich player ( wizarding sport ). His friend and him realize
that there is a secret in the school and they investigate.
◤
Plot
▪ It is a story about Harry Potter, an orphan brought up by his aunt
and uncle because his parents were killed when he was a baby.
Harry is unloved by his uncle and aunt but everything changes
when he is invited to join Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry.
▪ At Hogwarts Harry realizes he's special and his adventures
begin when he and his new friends Ron and Hermione attempt
to unravel the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone.
◤
Characters
▪ •Harry Potter
▪ •Ron Weasley
▪ •Hermione Granger
▪ •Rubeus Hagrid
▪ •Professor Dumbledore
▪ •Professor Severus Snape
▪ •Lord Voldemort
◤
Harry Potter
An 11-year-old orphan living with
his unwelcoming aunt, uncle,
and cousin, who learns of his
own fame as a wizard known to
have survived his parents'
murder at the hands of the dark
wizard Lord Voldemort as an
infant when he is accepted
to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry.
◤
Ron Weasley
Ron is Harry's first and best friend at
Hogwarts. They are BFFs from the get-
go. Ron spends much of his time being
overshadowed by his friends and
family. Ron's closest friends are an
international celebrity (Harry) and a
brainiac (Hermione), and he feels
intimidated by all his older brothers'
reputations.
Ron comes from a long line of wizards
on both sides of his family, making him
a pureblood. This would normally give
his family a higher status in the
wizarding world.
◤
Hermione Granger
Hermione’s character develops
significantly over the course of
the story and sheds light on
Harry’s character as well. At the
outset, she is an annoying
perfectionist, a goody-two-shoes
who has read all the books for
her classes in advance, has
learned all about Hogwarts, and
never breaks the rules.
◤
Rubeus Hagrid
Hagrid is the groundskeeper at
Hogwarts, but, man, he's so much
more than that. He's pretty much
the friendliest, most trustworthy,
and most loving authority figure at
Hogwarts.
Hagrid means well and tries to
keep secrets, but he's constantly
letting things slip. He's kind of an
open book in this way; he gives
away the secret of how to get past
Fluffy to a stranger in the Leaky
Cauldron way too easily.
◤
Professor Dumbledore
Prof. Albus Percival Wulfric
Brian Dumbledore is a fictional
character in J. K. Rowling's Harry
Potter series. He is the
headmaster of
the wizarding school Hogwarts. As
part of his backstory, it is revealed
that he is the founder and leader of
the Order of the Phoenix, an
organization dedicated to
fighting Lord Voldemort, the main
antagonist of the series.
◤
Professor
Severus Snape
Professor Snape is the Potions
teacher at Hogwarts and Head of
Slytherin House. Snape has a
hooked nose, greasy black hair,
and sallow skin.
He takes an instant dislike
to Harry, which Quirrell later
reveals is due to the fact that
Snape and Harry’s father, James,
hated each other when they
attended Hogwarts together.
◤
Lord Voldemort
Lord Voldemort is a character and
the main antagonist in J. K.
Rowling's series of Harry
Potter novels. The character first
appeared in Harry Potter and the
Philosopher's Stone, which was
published in 1997.
Voldemort is
the archenemy of Harry Potter,
who according to a prophecy has
"the power to vanquish the Dark
Lord". He attempts to murder the
boy, but instead kills his
parents, Lily and James Potter.
◤
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Theme
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the first novel in a seven-part series
centering on protagonist Harry Potter, who discovers that he is a wizard when he is
eleven years old. The series tracks an epic battle between good and evil in the
wizarding world, but the first book is, in its essence, a coming-of-age story.
At the center of The Sorcerer’s Stone is the importance of love from both family and
friends. Though Harry’s parents, Lily and James, love him a great deal, they die
when he is very young, and he is placed in the care of his Aunt Petunia and Uncle
Vernon, Muggle relatives who treat him terribly. When he goes to school at
Hogwarts, Harry gains a group of friends—primarily Ron and Hermione
◤
Power, Greed, and Desire
▪ For Harry and his friends starting school at Hogwarts, magic comes
with a certain degree of power: the ability to make a feather levitate, to
turn a match into a needle, to fly on a broomstick. But Rowling also
hints at what happens when adult wizards grow greedy for power and
the dangerous ramifications of that desire. Thus, not only does Rowling
associate greed and the desire for power with evil, but she also argues
that even more innocent desires can be harmful, because they can lead
to a destructive kind of greediness.
◤
Figurative Language
Personification:
In magical world of harry potter many different items come to life
Example: The infamous sorting hat that talks like a person
Simile:
Aunt Petunia often said that Dudley looked like a baby angel -- Harry often said
that Dudley looked like a pig in a wig.
The sentence above used similes because it has one of similes marker, “like”.
Metaphors:
Rowling uses metaphoric language and color in this sentence: “His face went
from red to green faster than a set of traffic lights...Within seconds it was the
grayish white of old porridge.
◤
Criticism
* The Praise Of Gryffindors And The Neglect Of Slytherins
* Hermione Is Smarter Than All The Professors?
* Quidditch Should NOT Be Allowed At School
* Snape's Obsession Over Lily Should Not Be Idolized
* Why Would They Still Be Using Quills And Parchment?
◤
Setting
The first setting is with the Dursley's, of number
four,Private Drive.Second, is in the Diagon Alley where
wizards and witches go to shop for items like
cauldrons, books, and magic wands.Next, is at Hogwarts
school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Then the setting goes to
a forest by Hogwarts, the forbidden forest where the
strange creature live.
◤
Conclusion
▪ At the end of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,
good conquers evil on many levels. Most obviously,
Harry – with the help of his friends – keeps Voldemort
from taking the Sorcerer's Stone. By doing so, they
stop the Dark Lord from getting eternal life.
