INTRODUCTION
• Journal bearings are essential machine components for
compressors, pumps, turbines, internal-combustion engines,
motors, generators, etc. In a journal bearing a shaft or journal
rotates within a close-fitting cylindrical sleeve (the bearing)
and the relative motion is sliding.

• The journal and bearing surfaces are separated by a film of
lubricant that is supplied to the clearance space between the
journal and bearing. The basic purpose of a journal bearing is to
provide radial support to a rotating shaft.
• Lubricant is a substance that reduces wear and friction by
formation of thin oil film in between the contacting areas of two
mating bodies.
• But this mineral or synthetic oil used are non degradable and it
causes oil pollution and also having the low value of pressure
distribution and load carrying capacity of journal bearing.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
• The mineral oil used are non degradable and it causes oil
pollution.
• The Pressure distribution at high load and rpm is low.
• The load carrying capacity of journal bearing is also having
the low value at high load and rpm.

The main aim is to find the equivalent oils like bio lubricants
such as jatropha instead of mineral oil which helps to
determine the followings:
• Load carrying capacity
• Pressure distribution
• Maximum Pressure

OBJECTIVE
• Calculating Pressure distribution and Load carrying
capacity of journal bearing of existing lubricant and
bio oil by analytically.
• Testing of existing lubricant and bio oil for maximum
pressure on Journal bearing tester.
• Comparing Analytical results of Pressure distribution,
Load carrying capacity, Maximum Pressure.

METHODOLOGY

What is Jatropha ?
• It’s an oil seed tree.
• It produces very high quality bio fuel.
• Propogates rapidly.
• It is highly resistant to drought and poor soil condition.
• Bio-oils are usually darkbrown, free-flowing liquids
having a distinctive smoky odour.
• Bio oil is a complex mixture of several hundreds of
organic compounds, mainly including acids, alcohols
,aldehydes, esters, ketones,phenols, and lignin-derived
oligomers. Some of these compounds are directly
related to the undesirable properties of bio-oil.

FUTURE SCOPE
• Recent trends in tribology show that the thermo-physical and
chemical properties of the Bio-lubricant like Jatropha oil can be
enhanced by modifying its composition or by altering its
Tribological properties for enhancing the performance of
Biolubricant.
• Bio-oils is a promising renewable energy source which have
received extensive recognition around the world for their
characteristics as combustion fuels used in boiler , engines or gas
turbines and resources in chemical industries.

EXPECTED CONCLUSION
• After testing of three oils that is SAE20W40, Turbinol XT 46
and Jatropha bio lubricant, we will conclude that we got maximum
pressure distribution for Jatropha bio-oil as compared to XT 46 and
20W40, So it is beneficial to use.
•
• By comparing the results of load carrying capacity we will
conclude that we got the maximum load carrying capacity of
Jatropha bio oil.
• Jatropha oil will show several good characteristics high viscosity
and increased load carrying capacity hence can be used as
alternative bio-lubricant for journal bearing application.

INTRODUCTION • Journal bearings are essential machine components for compressors, pumps, turbines, internal-combustion engines, motors, generators, etc. In a journal bearing a shaft or journal rotates within a close-fitting cylindrical sleeve (the bearing) and the relative motion is sliding. 3
  • 4. • The journal and bearing surfaces are separated by a film of lubricant that is supplied to the clearance space between the journal and bearing. The basic purpose of a journal bearing is to provide radial support to a rotating shaft. • Lubricant is a substance that reduces wear and friction by formation of thin oil film in between the contacting areas of two mating bodies. • But this mineral or synthetic oil used are non degradable and it causes oil pollution and also having the low value of pressure distribution and load carrying capacity of journal bearing. 4 INTRODUCTION

  • 9. The main aim is to find the equivalent oils like bio lubricants such as jatropha instead of mineral oil which helps to determine the followings: • Load carrying capacity • Pressure distribution • Maximum Pressure 9 OBJECTIVE
  • 10. • Calculating Pressure distribution and Load carrying capacity of journal bearing of existing lubricant and bio oil by analytically. • Testing of existing lubricant and bio oil for maximum pressure on Journal bearing tester. • Comparing Analytical results of Pressure distribution, Load carrying capacity, Maximum Pressure. 10 METHODOLOGY
  • 11. 11 What is Jatropha ? • It’s an oil seed tree. • It produces very high quality bio fuel. • Propogates rapidly. • It is highly resistant to drought and poor soil condition.
  • 12. • Bio-oils are usually darkbrown, free-flowing liquids having a distinctive smoky odour. • Bio oil is a complex mixture of several hundreds of organic compounds, mainly including acids, alcohols ,aldehydes, esters, ketones,phenols, and lignin-derived oligomers. Some of these compounds are directly related to the undesirable properties of bio-oil. BIO OIL

FUTURE SCOPE • Recent trends in tribology show that the thermo-physical and chemical properties of the Bio-lubricant like Jatropha oil can be enhanced by modifying its composition or by altering its Tribological properties for enhancing the performance of Biolubricant. • Bio-oils is a promising renewable energy source which have received extensive recognition around the world for their characteristics as combustion fuels used in boiler , engines or gas turbines and resources in chemical industries. 17
  • 18. EXPECTED CONCLUSION • After testing of three oils that is SAE20W40, Turbinol XT 46 and Jatropha bio lubricant, we will conclude that we got maximum pressure distribution for Jatropha bio-oil as compared to XT 46 and 20W40, So it is beneficial to use. • • By comparing the results of load carrying capacity we will conclude that we got the maximum load carrying capacity of Jatropha bio oil. • Jatropha oil will show several good characteristics high viscosity and increased load carrying capacity hence can be used as alternative bio-lubricant for journal bearing application. 18
