The Day of the Dead celebration has been implemented in life even since I can remember. My great grandparents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and
the rest of my family would build altars, cook food and have a family party on November 1st and 2nd. I grew up knowing what to do and what my
role was in this celebration. My grandmother would tell me to go buy candy from the store, help bring the flowers from the market and help set up
the table with all the food and offerings. However, I didn't know the history behind it nor the significance of the objects in the altars. I simply knew
that this celebration was a way of honoring our dearly departed.
Upon signing up for this class, I was really excited to learn about this special celebration. Before the first day of lecture, I thought the class was
going to be a history/art class learning about the origin through readings and art. However, after reading the syllabus, I became even more intrigued
because we were going to build actual altars. After being asked to bring the picture of a dearly departed we wanted to honor, I immediately pictured
my great grandfather, papГЎ OnГ©simo. I had the privilege to meet him when my parents decided to go back to our town, San Juan TabaГЎ in the
state of Oaxaca.
During the first week of our arrival, my parents and I went to visit my great grandparents on a weekend. We arrived to their house, after a 15 minute
walk up the hill, around 8:00 am in the morning. My papГЎ OnГ©simo was finished eating breakfast. My great grandmother, mamГЎ Tomasa, cooked
some beans, made tortillas, put a pot of freshly ground coffee, and made a salsa on her molcajete. This was papГЎ OnГ©simo'a breakfast. While we
ate breakfast, papГЎ OnГ©simo was telling us the condition of his land where he had coffee, corn, and tomatoes planted. I asked him if that's where

Growing up my mother raised me with her Mexican traditions and beliefs. Many that we celebrate to this day. One holiday that we celebrated around
Halloween is DГa de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead. This is a holiday that celebrates and remembers loved ones that have passed. Why is this
day celebrated today? It is celebrated because it is a tradition that dates back many years, celebrates loved ones who have died, and it helps family
remember their loves ones.
To begin, Day of the Dead was stared in the 15th century by the Aztec people. The Aztec people believed in human sacrifice. They would sacrifice
people to the lady of the Dead, known as goddess Mictecacihtla. The website Britannica states that the Aztec people would celebrate the lady of the
dead for a whole month. The month was originally in the month of August. Once the Spanish arrived in Mexico they brought the belief of Catholicism.
The Spaniards taught the Aztec about their catholic beliefs and ultimately combined the two belief and created a Folk Catholicism. The combination
of the two beliefs created The Day of the Dead which was changed to coincided with All Saints day and all Souls day, November 1st and November

I will need to research the Aztec life including their culture, heritage, and how they celebrated this day. I need to ask myself if there were more
than just altars, for example a ritual done by them. The reason I ask myself that is because 2,000 to 3,000 years ago tribes were heavily influenced
