The Importance Of Skills Approach To Leadership
Leadership is a process where all individuals, the leader and followers, work together to achieve a common goal; it is not any single characteristic of
the leader, but an event that occurs between that leader and the followers (Northouse, 2016). Effective leaders exhibit the behaviors of critical thinking,
problem–solving, priority setting, skillful communication, and respecting and valuing others (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). I chose the skills approach,
behavioral approach, and servant leadership theory based on how they are defined and the type of leader I aspire to become. I will address the primary
concepts of each theory as well as the strengths and weaknesses of my test results along with opportunities for improvement.
Skills Approach to Leadership
The skills approach to leadership emphasizes skills and abilities that can be learned and developed and provides a map that serves as a guideline for
achieving effective leadership in an organization (Northouse, 2016). The first skills approach model was proposed in 1955 by Robert Katz and is a
three skills approach (Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). The three skills in this theory are technical, human, and conceptual. The technical skill is the ability to
work with things, conceptual skill is the ability to work with ideas and concepts, and human skill is the ability to work with people (Northouse, 2016).
The Mumford model has five elements: individual attributes, competencies, leadership outcomes, career expectations, and

Essay on Leadership and Communication Skills
Communication skills and leadership go hand in hand. In order to lead a group and influence their completion of specific goals, one must be capable of
successfully communicating among ones peers. This is especially true in the healthcare industry. A leader who lacks effective communication skills is
unable to maintain camaraderie between their staff, due to misunderstanding and ineffective communication. This results in failed goals. Leadership in
the healthcare industry is vital not only to the organization, but also its staff, patients and visitors. According to early research, the process of
leadership should encompass certain traits and behaviors. The seven traits that proved to be consistently associated with leadership are: Drive,...show

It allows for the inspiration, organization, and implementation of a vision (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2013, p. 26). A company or organizational
vision is that company's framework for success. It allows all employees to see the "positive" in the future. It allows for camaraderie and for
achievement. Being a good leader and a role model allows for inspirational motivation–a vision. An effective leader relies on feedback from their peers
and does not become self–obsessed, but rather self–aware (Goleman, 2014). Jack Welch states "Nothing you do anymore as an individual matters
except how you nurture and support your team and help its members increase their self–confidence" (Welch & Welch, 2013, para. 3). Having self
knowledge and organizational knowledge are key characteristics of a quality leader. As General George Patton would say "Know what you know
and know what you do not know" (Power, 2014), then act as JFK did during the Cuban Missile Crisis and leave the room. He knew his presence was
intimidating as President and wanted to divert any stifling of ideas that would solve the Crisis so he literally vacated the room. He did so after
dividing the large group of experts who had diverse knowledge bases and opinions about the matter, into smaller groups, eliminating the chance of
groupthink (Sutton, 2014). Their self knowledge and organizational knowledge was spot on. Effective listening, verbal and nonverbal skills, trust,

Strong management and leadership is very crucial for business success. It helps in driving innovation, unlocking the potential of employees, as well as
enabling the manager to drive growth and productivity. It is never fast, and it is not always simple to build up depth and strength in management or
leadership capabilities. However, the possible benefits are vivid: increased performance and profitability, improved rates of survival, and better
employee wellbeing and motivation. It is important to keep in mind that entrepreneurs are creative and innovative thinkers who are always passionate

My Leadership Philosophy
1.A Leader is someone who people want to work for. They lookout for their people, yet hold them accountable. People follow them due to the respect
for the person and not because of their position or rank. They are respected both up and down the chain of command. Leaders are people not afraid to
make decisions. Sometimes the wrong decision is made, but a great leader learns from that move which helps on future decisions. To date, I have
gathered the good values from the leaders I respected and found a way to incorporate it into my leadership skills. I have also taken the bad principles
from leaders I didn't agree with and have made every effort not to do what they did. The best leaders I have worked for didn't always give an answer
or order right away; sometimes they would get back with the answer after some time to think on it.
2. When I made decisions at work for any tasking, I tend to complete it my way. I have no problems listening to others opinions if they are different
and occasionally, I will change my planning upon someone else's idea or thought. However, if I do think my idea isbetter, I will normally do it my way,
as I am the one who has to answer for it, at the end of the day. Referring to Ref (a) I have at least three areas in my leadership philosophy that could
use some tuning up. In the section titled "Model the way", I received a 7.9 feedback in "I ask for feedback on how my actions affect others people's
performance". In the category

Good Leadership Skills
Leadership We see leaders around us everywhere. Regardless of what the profession or expertise is, or what sort of an institution there is, leaders
are required. There are many leadership characteristics that come into play. In other words, not everyone has what it takes to be a good leader.
Surely, in school all of us are taught things like team work and good leadership skills, leadership itself falls under a huge category. There are many
models of leadership present that serve to analyze and assess how much of the leadership qualities a person has in them. Leadership changes are
also seen in many schools as well. There is a change in not only roles, but alterations are noted in relationship and responsibilities. There is change
in not only the roles, but the responsibilities and the relations are effected is well. It is seen that in this form of leadership, there is less tendency
of hierarchical within an organization. Servant leadership is basically a set of leadership practices and the philosophies regarding leadership.
Surely most of us know what leadership really is. Leadership is seen simply as the accusation and exercise of power for someone who is on top of
the pyramid. This is the conventional and simple form of leadership that we all know and love. Where on one hand there is the conventional form of
leadership, the servant leader model is the form where the needs and concerns of others are put first. In this model, the needs and concerns of others
are placed

Leadership Competencies And Leadership Skills
The ability and strength of an individual to achieve goals by supervising processes, guiding initiatives and employees is defined as Leadership skills.
Valuable leadership skills include taking thoughtful decisions, allocation of resources, and the ability to delegate, inspire and communicate effectively.
Other leadership traits include honesty, confidence, commitment and creativity. Leadership competencies can be used to effectively select, develop
and promote leaders in an organization .The difference between Leadership Skill and leadership competency can explained as the required level of
efficiency to perform a task assigned is known as skill whereas the quality to accomplish the same is called as competency. When creating
leadership competencies certain factors are considered such as business strategies and future trends. To drive the use of competencies in selecting
and developing leaders HR practitioners should use the business strategies. To effectively build a unique set of skills for the organization 's leaders,
the firm will sustain competitive advantage. The role of a project manager has always been my interest. The position which I have always desired is
a role of project manager. Leadership skills are utmost important for today's mangers as the Project is entirely dependent on them , because without a

Reflection On Leadership Skills
Leadership Skills One of my favorite lectures for this course was the "leadership skills." This lecture caught my attention from the beginning to the
last second of it. It was very useful especially for the medical students because in the future they may become leaders for their medical health team at
their work or be leaders in their classes at the universities. Therefore, as a medical student I studied this lecture to improve my skills in the leadership
skill. In the past I didn't know how to treat the problems between the members in the group and how to influence and motivate the behavior of the other
members. However, after I had studied this lecture I learn many things. First thing I had learned was how to deal with the conflicts in the group by
doing some important things which are focusing on the process and not the people as the source of conflict, developing common team purposes and
values, emphasizing on collaboration, and recognizing that differences in the view points are inevitable and must be discussed openly. another thing I
had learned was how to motivate the members to contribute by treating everyone with respect and courtesy, making people feel appreciate for the work
they have done, making suggestions not demand, making people as though they are contributing something unique, and making sure all the members
of the group understand the discussion. I hope in the future all these skills can help to provide better quality care to the patient and

MGT 321: Assessing Leadership Skills

This paper will provide information about the theoretical approaches that I will use to enhance my leadership effectiveness, it will discuss my
leadership style and the reason I choose the style. This paper will also explain the leadership skills and qualities I already possess, with the skills and
qualities that need improvement, along with how to implement the leadership/follower interaction to improve the organization where I would like to
work, and finally describe one point of action that I've learned from my Self Insight papers, that will include a description of how each point will be
implemented.

The reason why I choose these models is because they best fit my leadership style, and I think it's a productive way of leadership. In utilizing this skill
I'm ale to listen to other perspective, and welcome an assortment of resolutions.
My best leadership qualities are in the category of a transformational leader. Transformational leaders are a leader that influences, inspire, move and
literally transform followers to achieve organizational goals beyond their self–interests thus initiating about positive change. They also introduce new
business models, products and services because of their ability to create new organizational visions, strategies, cultures, and structures through
committed followers. Transformational leaders positively change follower's lives, lifting spirits and even the commitment to ethics and morality
(Weiss, J. (2011) My preference would be a transformational leader because they deal more with the person rather than the task. They build
relationships with their team members, they encourage and motivate, and I think that their followers will get more work done because of the rapport
that is made with the team.
Another quality that I posses is "Stewardship" stewardship involves the support and belief that leaders are deeply accountable to others as well as to the
organization, without trying to control others,

This time I tried focusing on improving my empathy skills by not trying to always provide positive responses to the members when they were telling
me the challenges they were facing as I have done and received feedback from past group members. For instance, when members were saying how
people did not understand them or they felt like an outsider, I tried to address how they were feeling and how maybe the veterans could educate those
who do not understand. I especially wanted to work on my empathy skills with this population of veterans because I wanted to build rapport with them
and show them that their feelings about the war and role transition to student was validated and not something that they should just easily forget about.
My heart goes out to clients with PTSD because no one should have to experience the trauma they have seen, especially while trying to protect our
country. From this group I learned that I need to take a step back and give myself a pause when I am feeling overwhelmed, so the questions do not
appear forced. My main weakness as a leader is doubting my self as seen through the forced questions. I want the best for my clients, but I let my
emotions and anxiety that I am not providing the members with the best ability to succeed, get the best of me.

Summary
How does different leadership and management skills demonstrate success? According to Business Dictionary, 2016, Management Theory is defined
as "A collection of ideas which set forth general rules on how to manage a business or organization" and leadership is defined as "the activity of
leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this". Management theory addresses how managers and supervisors relate to their
organizations in the "knowledge of its goals, the implementation of effective means to get goals accomplished and how to motivate employees to
perform to the highest standard". The leadership responsibilities function requires communicating, teaching and carrying out the organization vision,
while also addressing front–line conflicts and issues. Managers and Leaders are expected to exhibit decision making skills. This paper will address the
strength, weakness and recommendation of leadership and management skills.
Introduction
There are two types of leadership styles and two types of leader behaviors; leaders who focus on employees completing a task and leaders who focus
on employee's emotions to complete a task. For example, leader task oriented may disconnect from the human and focus on the task at hand.
However, a leader who is employee oriented will focus on training, demonstrating and ensuring that the employee is clear on the task at hand. Per the

Management and Leadership Skills Essay
Introduction
Management and leadership skills in nursing and other healthcare professions are becoming a more and more widely spoken of subject, as they are
essential skills for everyday practice in delivering care (Gopee and Galloway, 2009). Effective management requires the nurse to be able to draw on
evidence based knowledge and experience to develop the ability to manage competently during practice. Skills without knowledge, appropriate attitude
and understanding will not equate to competency (Watson, 2002).
This piece of work will critically explore the theories about management and leadership in health care. At the beginning it will provide a base
understanding of both topics and accountability importance. It will then concentrate...show more content...
However leadership, as suggested by Cook (2001), can be seen as a cost effective way to improve patient`s care in times of limited resources, as a
good leader can demonstrate certain behaviours and roles to influence others, as to empower others and provide direction and change. Faugier and
Woolnough (2002) support these ideas, but also believe that there is a difference between management and leadership, as they contrast managers to
be planners, where as leaders are looked upon as people who can communicate vision, motivate, inspire and empower in order to create organisational
change. Mullin's (2007) idea of leadership can be seen as the ability of one person to influence the behaviour or actions of other people.
Murphy (2005) maintains that leaders are accountable for helping their follower's to become efficient and support them to develop their strengths and
abilities. Distinguishing and categorising between different leadership styles can be done in several ways, (Gopee and Galloway, 2009). In this essay
traditional classification of authoritian (autocratic), democratic, permissive (laissez–faire) and bureaucratic styles of leaders will be discussed.
Accountability, as stated by Sullivan and Garland (2010) means accepting ownership for the results whatever they are. The NMC (2008) defines
accountability as an important part of professional practice as nurses and midwives often have to make judgements in a wide variety of circumstances,

Essay about Leadership in Early Childhood
Leadership is a sociocultural construct underpinned by the beliefs and values of a society (Waniganayake, Cheeseman, Fenech, Hadley, & Shepherd,
2012). Leadership in early childhood have shifted the focus from one designated leader into a more collective approach – distributed leadership, which
is not about delegating. As Cheeseman (2012) states, in early childhood settings, attention is often directed at administrative and management leadership
(Waniganayake et al., 2012); however it is important to have a designated leader in the areas of development and implementation of curriculum and

work with the appropriate style of leadership most suitable in that circumstance (Rodd, 2006), and respond to various situations in times of change by
critically reflecting on the purposes they see for their setting and the goals they are aiming to achieve with children and families. Understanding from
the transformational theory, an educational leader will be inspiring others with visions that can enable the team to be directed and motivated toward

leader as they work collaboratively with others towards the same vision (Rodd, 2006). For instance, taken from ACEQA (2013), the educational leader
would examine routines with each of the room leaders, and how to make them more effective for children's learning experiences. Here, the educational

Essay on Management and Leadership
Successful organizations have strong leaders and managers that develop, support and encourage employee longevity within a company. There is a
significant difference between leadership and management however both skills have to be used collectively and both are important to a profitable
organization. Leadership is a notion of communicating an organization's vision, whereas management is more of the implementation of the
organization's vision. The manager typically carries out the responsibilities written by the organization and has a good team underneath them to carry

According to Hersey and Blanchard (1998), there are three areas required for effective leadership. Technical skills, which includes clinical expertise
and knowledge as it pertains to nursing. Secondly, human skills, which is the ability and judgment to work with people in leadership roles. And
lastly, conceptual skills which is the ability to understand the complexities of overall organization and figure out how and where one's own strengths
of management fits into the overall organization (Cherry, Jacob 2011). Leadership is unique compared to any other role because of its responsibility
for people. Good leaders are followed merely because they have gained people's trust and respect.
Management:
Management involves the tactical aspect of day to day functions and who keeps control of the work environment to make sure the organization is
moving forward and in the same direction of the company's vision. Managers are faced with many responsibilities each day, one of which is
managing people. The goal of a successful manager is to achieve the highest productivity of the organization by way of the people he/she manages. A
manager is more of a problem solver and takes care of work areas relating to people management, time management, decision making etc.
According to Lewin (1951) and White & Lippit (1960), there are three prevalent management behavior styles: Authoritarian, democratic and

Effective Leadership A successful leader is most importantly a mentor. This person grooms his or her staff to take his or her place, by teaching,
inspiring and helping one to reach personal goals as well as the goals of the organization. Sam Adams, one of the leaders of the Boston Tea Party, was
quoted as saying: "Outstanding leaders go out of the way to boost the self–esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what
they can accomplish (Government Leaders, 2011)."

leader is able listen to her staff and communicates where they need to go to meet the goals of the organization. This requires listening but also
speaking in a way that can be easily understood, so that everyone on the team knows what the goals are and how to meet them. She took the time to

that must be for real change to occur. In less Rostonian terms (that is, based on Rost (1993)), without a motivated group of followers leaders are
stranded and not achieving to a level of excellence. This paper will discuss some areas of importance for motivation in leadership as well as an
application to leadership theory and a discussion on personal motivators. Motivation is the reason or purpose behind action, or what causes one to act in

Osland, et al. (2007) provide a good introduction to three basic motivational content theories. The first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that
proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social
belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most basic (like food and water) to the highest level
(self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there
is little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more basic needs first satisfied. The second content
theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or
affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive connotation or implementation, but it is argued that
people motivated by affiliation make better leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that Theory
X people or employees are inherently lazy and must be controlled and forced to act, whereas Theory Y people are self–controlled, motivated, and
ambitious. Steers, et al. (1996) identify an additional theory of motivation, which builds on Maslow's

1. Introduction
The leadership abilities and competencies of a leader are integral parts to the success and effectiveness of their performance and their team and
followers. The development of these aspects of leadership is a dynamic process that includes a variety of interpersonal factors (Day, Fleenor, Atwater,
Sturm, & McKee, 2014). Such qualities like self–motivation is a requirement to the development of leadership skills in that "identity, meta–cognitive,
and self–regulation processes are thought to be crucial to the refinement of knowledge structures and information processing capabilities associated
with leadership expertise." (Day et al., 2014, p. 68) Self–regulation is of particular importance for goal–directed activities and adapting to change
(Karoly, 1993). Self–regulatory skills are taken for granted, and most people are not innately effective self–regulators (Latham & Locke, 1991) which
can factor into their leadership development. As well personality is said to have an impact on leader skill development and performance through
patterns (Mumford et al., 2000) and certain traits to be predictive of effectiveness (Day et al., 2014). What is also important is that Li, Arvey, and
Song (2011) "found self–esteem to be strongly predictive of leadership role occupancy across both genders as well as predictive of the rate of
leadership advancement for females" (Day et al., 2014, p. 76). All of these are significant underlining factors to leadership development for any

The Importance Of Skills Approach To Leadership

  • 1. The Importance Of Skills Approach To Leadership Leadership is a process where all individuals, the leader and followers, work together to achieve a common goal; it is not any single characteristic of the leader, but an event that occurs between that leader and the followers (Northouse, 2016). Effective leaders exhibit the behaviors of critical thinking, problem–solving, priority setting, skillful communication, and respecting and valuing others (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). I chose the skills approach, behavioral approach, and servant leadership theory based on how they are defined and the type of leader I aspire to become. I will address the primary concepts of each theory as well as the strengths and weaknesses of my test results along with opportunities for improvement. Skills Approach to Leadership The skills approach to leadership emphasizes skills and abilities that can be learned and developed and provides a map that serves as a guideline for achieving effective leadership in an organization (Northouse, 2016). The first skills approach model was proposed in 1955 by Robert Katz and is a three skills approach (Rowe & Guerrero, 2016). The three skills in this theory are technical, human, and conceptual. The technical skill is the ability to work with things, conceptual skill is the ability to work with ideas and concepts, and human skill is the ability to work with people (Northouse, 2016). The Mumford model has five elements: individual attributes, competencies, leadership outcomes, career expectations, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on Leadership and Communication Skills Communication skills and leadership go hand in hand. In order to lead a group and influence their completion of specific goals, one must be capable of successfully communicating among ones peers. This is especially true in the healthcare industry. A leader who lacks effective communication skills is unable to maintain camaraderie between their staff, due to misunderstanding and ineffective communication. This results in failed goals. Leadership in the healthcare industry is vital not only to the organization, but also its staff, patients and visitors. According to early research, the process of leadership should encompass certain traits and behaviors. The seven traits that proved to be consistently associated with leadership are: Drive,...show more content... It allows for the inspiration, organization, and implementation of a vision (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2013, p. 26). A company or organizational vision is that company's framework for success. It allows all employees to see the "positive" in the future. It allows for camaraderie and for achievement. Being a good leader and a role model allows for inspirational motivation–a vision. An effective leader relies on feedback from their peers and does not become self–obsessed, but rather self–aware (Goleman, 2014). Jack Welch states "Nothing you do anymore as an individual matters except how you nurture and support your team and help its members increase their self–confidence" (Welch & Welch, 2013, para. 3). Having self knowledge and organizational knowledge are key characteristics of a quality leader. As General George Patton would say "Know what you know and know what you do not know" (Power, 2014), then act as JFK did during the Cuban Missile Crisis and leave the room. He knew his presence was intimidating as President and wanted to divert any stifling of ideas that would solve the Crisis so he literally vacated the room. He did so after dividing the large group of experts who had diverse knowledge bases and opinions about the matter, into smaller groups, eliminating the chance of groupthink (Sutton, 2014). Their self knowledge and organizational knowledge was spot on. Effective listening, verbal and nonverbal skills, trust, understanding, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 6. My Leadership Philosophy 1.A Leader is someone who people want to work for. They lookout for their people, yet hold them accountable. People follow them due to the respect for the person and not because of their position or rank. They are respected both up and down the chain of command. Leaders are people not afraid to make decisions. Sometimes the wrong decision is made, but a great leader learns from that move which helps on future decisions. To date, I have gathered the good values from the leaders I respected and found a way to incorporate it into my leadership skills. I have also taken the bad principles from leaders I didn't agree with and have made every effort not to do what they did. The best leaders I have worked for didn't always give an answer or order right away; sometimes they would get back with the answer after some time to think on it. 2. When I made decisions at work for any tasking, I tend to complete it my way. I have no problems listening to others opinions if they are different and occasionally, I will change my planning upon someone else's idea or thought. However, if I do think my idea isbetter, I will normally do it my way, as I am the one who has to answer for it, at the end of the day. Referring to Ref (a) I have at least three areas in my leadership philosophy that could use some tuning up. • 8. Good Leadership Skills Leadership We see leaders around us everywhere. Regardless of what the profession or expertise is, or what sort of an institution there is, leaders are required. There are many leadership characteristics that come into play. In other words, not everyone has what it takes to be a good leader. Surely, in school all of us are taught things like team work and good leadership skills, leadership itself falls under a huge category. There are many models of leadership present that serve to analyze and assess how much of the leadership qualities a person has in them. Leadership changes are also seen in many schools as well. There is a change in not only roles, but alterations are noted in relationship and responsibilities. There is change in not only the roles, but the responsibilities and the relations are effected is well. It is seen that in this form of leadership, there is less tendency of hierarchical within an organization. Servant leadership is basically a set of leadership practices and the philosophies regarding leadership. Surely most of us know what leadership really is. Leadership is seen simply as the accusation and exercise of power for someone who is on top of the pyramid. This is the conventional and simple form of leadership that we all know and love. Where on one hand there is the conventional form of leadership, the servant leader model is the form where the needs and concerns of others are put first. Leadership Competencies And Leadership Skills The ability and strength of an individual to achieve goals by supervising processes, guiding initiatives and employees is defined as Leadership skills. Valuable leadership skills include taking thoughtful decisions, allocation of resources, and the ability to delegate, inspire and communicate effectively. Other leadership traits include honesty, confidence, commitment and creativity. Leadership competencies can be used to effectively select, develop and promote leaders in an organization .The difference between Leadership Skill and leadership competency can explained as the required level of efficiency to perform a task assigned is known as skill whereas the quality to accomplish the same is called as competency. When creating leadership competencies certain factors are considered such as business strategies and future trends. To drive the use of competencies in selecting and developing leaders HR practitioners should use the business strategies. To effectively build a unique set of skills for the organization 's leaders, the firm will sustain competitive advantage. The role of a project manager has always been my interest. • 12. Reflection On Leadership Skills Leadership Skills One of my favorite lectures for this course was the "leadership skills." This lecture caught my attention from the beginning to the last second of it. It was very useful especially for the medical students because in the future they may become leaders for their medical health team at their work or be leaders in their classes at the universities. Therefore, as a medical student I studied this lecture to improve my skills in the leadership skill. In the past I didn't know how to treat the problems between the members in the group and how to influence and motivate the behavior of the other members. However, after I had studied this lecture I learn many things. First thing I had learned was how to deal with the conflicts in the group by doing some important things which are focusing on the process and not the people as the source of conflict, developing common team purposes and values, emphasizing on collaboration, and recognizing that differences in the view points are inevitable and must be discussed openly. another thing I had learned was how to motivate the members to contribute by treating everyone with respect and courtesy, making people feel appreciate for the work they have done, making suggestions not demand, making people as though they are contributing something unique, and making sure all the members of the group understand the discussion. I hope in the future all these skills can help to provide better quality care to the patient and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This paper will also explain the leadership skills and qualities I already possess, with the skills and qualities that need improvement, along with how to implement the leadership/follower interaction to improve the organization where I would like to work, and finally describe one point of action that I've learned from my Self Insight papers, that will include a description of how each point will be implemented. In utilizing this skill I'm ale to listen to other perspective, and welcome an assortment of resolutions. My best leadership qualities are in the category of a transformational leader. Transformational leaders are a leader that influences, inspire, move and literally transform followers to achieve organizational goals beyond their self–interests thus initiating about positive change. They also introduce new business models, products and services because of their ability to create new organizational visions, strategies, cultures, and structures through committed followers. Transformational leaders positively change follower's lives, lifting spirits and even the commitment to ethics and morality (Weiss, J. (2011) My preference would be a transformational leader because they deal more with the person rather than the task. They build relationships with their team members, they encourage and motivate, and I think that their followers will get more work done because of the rapport that is made with the team. Another quality that I posses is "Stewardship" stewardship involves the support and belief that leaders are deeply accountable to others as well as to the organization, without trying to control others,

Reflection On Leadership Skills This time I tried focusing on improving my empathy skills by not trying to always provide positive responses to the members when they were telling me the challenges they were facing as I have done and received feedback from past group members. For instance, when members were saying how people did not understand them or they felt like an outsider, I tried to address how they were feeling and how maybe the veterans could educate those who do not understand. I especially wanted to work on my empathy skills with this population of veterans because I wanted to build rapport with them and show them that their feelings about the war and role transition to student was validated and not something that they should just easily forget about. My heart goes out to clients with PTSD because no one should have to experience the trauma they have seen, especially while trying to protect our country. From this group I learned that I need to take a step back and give myself a pause when I am feeling overwhelmed, so the questions do not appear forced. My main weakness as a leader is doubting my self as seen through the forced questions. I want the best for my clients, but I let my emotions and anxiety that I am not providing the members with the best ability to succeed, get the best of me. What might you like to improve in terms of your leadership skills? I would like to improve my ability to ask questions that I need to ask to address each of Cole's 7 Steps to benefit my group members but Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 17. Management and Leadership Skills Essay Introduction Management and leadership skills in nursing and other healthcare professions are becoming a more and more widely spoken of subject, as they are essential skills for everyday practice in delivering care (Gopee and Galloway, 2009). Effective management requires the nurse to be able to draw on evidence based knowledge and experience to develop the ability to manage competently during practice. However leadership, as suggested by Cook (2001), can be seen as a cost effective way to improve patient`s care in times of limited resources, as a good leader can demonstrate certain behaviours and roles to influence others, as to empower others and provide direction and change. Faugier and Woolnough (2002) support these ideas, but also believe that there is a difference between management and leadership, as they contrast managers to be planners, where as leaders are looked upon as people who can communicate vision, motivate, inspire and empower in order to create organisational change. Mullin's (2007) idea of leadership can be seen as the ability of one person to influence the behaviour or actions of other people. Murphy (2005) maintains that leaders are accountable for helping their follower's to become efficient and support them to develop their strengths and abilities. Distinguishing and categorising between different leadership styles can be done in several ways, (Gopee and Galloway, 2009). In this essay traditional classification of authoritian (autocratic), democratic, permissive (laissez–faire) and bureaucratic styles of leaders will be discussed. Accountability, as stated by Sullivan and Garland (2010) means accepting ownership for the results whatever they are. The NMC (2008) defines accountability as an important part of professional practice as nurses and midwives often have to make judgements in a wide variety of circumstances, using their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Essay about Leadership in Early Childhood Leadership is a sociocultural construct underpinned by the beliefs and values of a society (Waniganayake, Cheeseman, Fenech, Hadley, & Shepherd, 2012). Leadership in early childhood have shifted the focus from one designated leader into a more collective approach – distributed leadership, which is not about delegating. As Cheeseman (2012) states, in early childhood settings, attention is often directed at administrative and management leadership (Waniganayake et al., 2012); however it is important to have a designated leader in the areas of development and implementation of curriculum and pedagogy – being the educational leader as a requirement of the National Quality Framework – whilst at the same time see educational leadership as a ...show more content... Understanding from the transformational theory, an educational leader will be inspiring others with visions that can enable the team to be directed and motivated toward creating 'a culture of learning and professional growth' (Duignan, 2006; Waniganayake et al., 2012; Sinclair, 2007; Rodd, 2006; Siraj–Blatchford and Manni, 2006; ACECQA, 2013). Moreover, distributed leadership approach, which falls under the transformational theory, is seen in the educational leader as they work collaboratively with others towards the same vision (Rodd, 2006). • 22. Essay on Effective Leadership Effective Leadership A successful leader is most importantly a mentor. This person grooms his or her staff to take his or her place, by teaching, inspiring and helping one to reach personal goals as well as the goals of the organization. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish (Government Leaders, 2011)." This requires listening but also speaking in a way that can be easily understood, so that everyone on the team knows what the goals are and how to meet them. She took the time to know us as individuals and took an interest in our personal lives. People want to know that they matter and that they have an opportunity to express that value in their work and actions (Porter–O'Grady & Malloch, 2007). Without the ability to use the mutual relationship of leadership to influence the motivators of followers, leaders stagnate and are limited by their own inability to accomplish all that must be for real change to occur. The first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most basic (like food and water) to the highest level (self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there is little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more basic needs first satisfied. The second content theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive connotation or implementation, but it is argued that people motivated by affiliation make better leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that Theory X people or employees are inherently lazy and must be controlled and forced to act, whereas Theory Y people are self–controlled, motivated, and ambitious. Steers, et al. • 24. 1. Introduction The leadership abilities and competencies of a leader are integral parts to the success and effectiveness of their performance and their team and followers. The development of these aspects of leadership is a dynamic process that includes a variety of interpersonal factors (Day, Fleenor, Atwater, Sturm, & McKee, 2014). Such qualities like self–motivation is a requirement to the development of leadership skills in that "identity, meta–cognitive, and self–regulation processes are thought to be crucial to the refinement of knowledge structures and information processing capabilities associated with leadership expertise." (Day et al., 2014, p. 68) Self–regulation is of particular importance for goal–directed activities and adapting to change (Karoly, 1993). Self–regulatory skills are taken for granted, and most people are not innately effective self–regulators (Latham & Locke, 1991) which can factor into their leadership development. As well personality is said to have an impact on leader skill development and performance through patterns (Mumford et al., 2000) and certain traits to be predictive of effectiveness (Day et al., 2014). What is also important is that Li, Arvey, and Song (2011) "found self–esteem to be strongly predictive of leadership role occupancy across both genders as well as predictive of the rate of leadership advancement for females" (Day et al., 2014, p. 76). All of these are significant underlining factors to leadership development for any Get more content on HelpWriting.net
