Identify RFID:
Automating Inventory
Management for
Healthcare
Managing inventories of medical supplies across healthcare systems is a
challenging, high-stakes proposition, with patient well-being hanging in
the balance. Suppliers typically depend on field inventory staff to visit
sites and take inventories by hand, a process with a high margin for error
and high degree of risk. For suppliers, it can mean costly uncertainty about
what they have in their inventories at any given site, any given moment.
For healthcare organizations, it can mean not having critical supplies when
they’re needed.
Identify RFID, an RFID solutions provider in Thailand, has developed the
Intelligent Cabinet solution, which combines RFID capabilities and cloud-
based technologies to give medical suppliers and healthcare organizations
dramatically increased visibility into their inventories, enabling them to
improve inventory management, security, and efficiency. Clear visibility
and precise management are critical especially for high value consignment
goods that are kept at the customers’ site with little control or knowledge
of the inventory status or movements.

Our RFID tags are helping to remove guesswork,
waste, and risk for medical supply companies
and hospitals throughout Thailand.
Product information
sent to the cloud server
First, every item in an inventory is affixed with an Avery Dennison RAIN
RFID (UHF) tag and subsequently encoded with a unique digital ID that is
captured in an online inventory system to provide full traceability.
Supplies are then stored in the Intelligent Cabinet, which uses RAIN RFID
readers from Feig to provide security as well as item-level inventory
tracking. These readers scan the cabinet’s contents at regular intervals
and feed updated data to a cloud-based server networked with the
suppliers’ inventory management system. With the use of this solution,
full inventory visibility is made available to the suppliers at all times.
The system also alerts suppliers to any items that need to be replenished,
or that have become “dormant” by sitting unused for a specified length of
time. Expiry alerts notify suppliers of any items approaching the end of
their shelf life, which may further enhance patient safety and reduce risks.
In addition, users must have an RFID-enabled identification card on their
person to open the cabinet which provides accountability while capturing
consumption patterns of various departments.

Identify RFID’s Intelligent Cabinet solution has been successfully installed
in more than ten hospitals throughout Thailand, and quickly expanding.
Medical suppliers using the solution have been able to eliminate manual
product counts in exchange for far more accurate and up-to-date
automatic scans by the cabinet’s RFID readers. Greater inventory visibility
also provides more reliable data for informing site-level planning and
budgeting, so resources can be allocated most efficiently and billing
discrepancies can be avoided.
As an essential component of Identify RFID’s Intelligent Cabinet
solution, Avery Dennison’s RAIN RFID tags are capable of providing
the following benefits:
• Improved patient safety
• Reduced personnel travel to customer sites
• Reduced human error in stock counting
• Real time site-level insight into product usage and supply levels
• Greater understanding of consumption patterns
• Automatic alerts of understocks, overages, unused and expiring
products
• Increased security, resulting in decreased loss to theft or supply
misplacement
• Eliminated billing discrepancies
• Minimal physical contact with supplies, reducing the likelihood of
contamination from COVID-19 and other pathogens
