PSY 308 Module 1 Assignment 3 Biopsychosocial-Cultural Model

Traditionally, mental illness was considered a biological problem, either inherited or
developed due to genetic vulnerability within the individual. This point of view is termed
the medical model. Treatment was provided to the individual in one-to-one meetings with
a psychiatrist or sessions with a psychotherapist.
The field of mental health has evolved from the traditional model to one incorporating
many more people, factors, causes, and types of treatment. The biopsychosocial-cultural
model incorporates biological, psychological, developmental, familial, social, and
cultural factors to understand how mental illness develops and how to design effective
treatments.
Revisit the case of the two Wes Moores discussed in M1: Assignment 2. Then, pretend
that you are the prison psychologist who completed the evaluation of the Wes Moore
convicted of murder.
Using the module readings, the University online library resources, and the Internet,
complete the following:
Gather information about the potential causes of Mr. Moore’s outcome.
Write a report of your findings to be filed in Mr. Moore’s chart and used by professionals
who will be helping Mr. Moore. Address the following in your report:
Analyze how each of the following played a role in causing or affecting Mr. Moore’s
troubled childhood and eventual imprisonment:
Biological factors (genetic and physiological)
Developmental factors
Psychological factors (emotional and related to thoughts)
Familial and social factors
Cultural factors (environmental and multicultural)
Evaluate how Mr. Moore’s troubled childhood and eventual imprisonment could have
been prevented by early intervention. In addition, explain how that intervention could
have been designed to address each of the following:
Psychological factors
Familial and social factors
Cultural factors
Recommend at least two ideas for treatment that Mr. Moore should have received in
childhood, based on all of the following:
Biological factors
Psychological factors
Familial and social factors
Write a 3–5-page report in Word format (not including the title page and reference page).
Include a title and reference page in APA format, and apply APA standards to citation of
sources, including in-text citations and full references.

The most common childhood disorders tend to fall into one of two categories: behavioral
disorders or emotional disorders. This assignment will focus on the behavioral disorders
of childhood, which include the following:
· Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
· Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
· Conduct disorder (CD)
In this assignment, you will gain a better understanding of the similarities and differences
among these three disorders by filling out the behavioral disorders template provided.
Recommended sources include your textbook and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
website. You can visit this website at the following:
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD). Retrieved from:
Then, revisit the case of Anna, the four-year-old girl described in M2: Assignment 1.
Based on your analysis of the case, fill the template by doing the following:
· Complete the first three pages of tables in the template by providing information
related to the three disorders.
· On page four of the template, explain the reasons you agree or disagree with
Anna’s diagnosis of ADHD (in at least 300 words). Support your opinion with
information from academic sources.
·
· If you agree, list her symptoms that correspond with ADHD. Identify at least one
other problem or issue that would need to be treated.
· If you disagree, identify at least two problems or issues you believe are the most
significant and most in need of treatment.
· Describe appropriate treatments for each identified problem or issue.
Add a title and reference page to the template and apply APA standards to citation of
sources, including in-text citations and full references. Use the following file naming
convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

Select one of the above vignettes and analyze it in the following manner:
· Identify and describe two possible behavioral disorders one might consider as
DSM diagnoses. Make sure you support those choices with specific symptoms observed
in the vignettes.
· Compare and contrast the two diagnoses and select one that you consider as the
most appropriate DSMdiagnosis. Explain why one is more likely than the other.
· After reviewing recent research studies, readings in your textbook, and other
academic sources, provide a thorough description of the following:
· The symptoms required for a diagnosis of that disorder
· At least two possible causes of that disorder, incorporating at least one
developmental factor and at least one multicultural factor that may be involved in the
cause(s) of the disorder
· At least three of the most effective treatments available for that disorder
· At least one controversy, cultural bias, or ethical issue related to treatments
available for that disorder
· At least one controversy, cultural bias, or ethical issue related to the practice of
diagnosis or “labeling” children, in general
Write an 8–10-page paper in Word format. Add an APA style title page and references
page and cite your sources according to current APA standards. Cite information from at
least two academic sources to support your ideas. These may include your textbook,
and/or peer-reviewed research articles from the AUO library.
Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical
scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources, and display accurate
spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

You have learned that the conceptualization of autism spectrum disorders as diagnoses
has evolved, with the current DSM conceptualizing one neurological disorder with
common characteristics, which are presented on a wide continuum, rather than separate
disorders such as Asperger’s disorder or autistic disorder.
You may use the link provided or locate the video in the AUO library. Use this web
address if the link does not work. (Please copy and paste into your browser)
· Describe the symptoms or characteristics of autism spectrum disorder you saw
illustrated in the video that you learned about in your readings.
· You have learned that autism is a spectrum disorder, with some children
functioning at the lower end, requiring a lot of support, and others at the higher end,
needing minimal support.
Describe strengths and challenges that were noted for the children in the video?
· Explain why it is important for a clinician to evaluate strengths and challenges in
order to work with children, families, and educators.
· Drawing on your readings, the video, and any other peer-reviewed sources you
find relevant, explain whether research supports separate disorders (e.g., Asperger’s
disorder, autistic disorder) or one disorder with a continuum of severity.
Write a paper that is a minimum of 3 pages, not including a cover page and reference list.
Format your paper using APA standards, to citation of sources, including in-text citations
and full references. Use the following file naming convention:

PSY 308 Module 5 Assignment 1 LASA 2 Case Study of Emotional Disorders
For more classes visit

this assignment, you will analyze a fictional scenario and identify the possible disorders
involved. All the information needed for this assignment can be found in the textbook.
Read the following vignettes:
Emotional Disorder—Male Vignette
Nadif is a seven-year-old Somali-American boy who is homeschooled by his mother.
When Nadif was four years old, his family immigrated to the United States from war-torn
Somalia after living in a refugee camp. His family has been concerned about him from
the time they lived at the camp. He used to have an average appetite and slept relatively
well. Now, he wakes in the night, often with nightmares in which he becomes lost or
separated from his family. Nadif’s appetite has also been affected. He often reports
stomachaches and lack of appetite. His parents describe him as “nervous” most of the
time, particularly when his mother is not home. Nadif is too afraid to attend school away
from his parents, so his mother has chosen to homeschool him until he feels more secure
when away from his family.
Nadif seems to feel relatively comfortable out in public, as long as his family
accompanies him on outings. His parents are somewhat puzzled by his anxiety, as he has
never been lost. Although they all experienced hardships in Somalia, none of them was a
direct victim of any intensely traumatic event. Nadif claims he does not remember much
of his time in Somalia. His family hopes therapy will help Nadif feel calmer when they
are not present, so that he can attend school, develop friendships, and become
increasingly more independent.
Emotional Disorder—Female Vignette
Jada is a sixteen-year-old African American girl enrolled as a junior at the local public
high school. She has won numerous honors throughout her educational career for her
academic performance; but her greatest joy comes from playing the piano and singing in
her church choir. Jada’s vocal instructor raves about her singing voice and about her
potential for a career in music.
Jada hopes to attend a prestigious music school in New York City upon graduating from
high school, but worries about the cost and how much she will miss her family. The
pressure of an upcoming audition at school has caused Jada a great deal of stress. She
fears she will not be accepted or will not be able to attend for financial reasons. The stress
has begun to affect her daily functioning. She is having difficulty sleeping, has lost
weight due to decreased appetite, and is beginning to feel hopeless about her future.
Jada’s friends describe her as being “irrational” about the situation and “catastrophizing.”
Despite their best efforts, they cannot convince her that she has a strong chance. At her
weakest moments, Jada has even spoken passively of wishing she would die, so she
would not have to face the stress anymore.
During the past two weeks, Jada has been sad and tearful on most days and has lost
interest in her favorite activities. Last weekend, she was caught drinking alcohol with
some friends. She admitted to her parents that she has had alcohol on three separate
occasions because it helps her “stop feeling stressed.”
Select one of the above vignettes and analyze it by completing the following:
· Identify and describe two possible emotional disorders one might consider as DSM
diagnoses for this child or adolescent. Make sure you support those choices with specific
symptoms observed in the vignette.
· Compare and contrast the two diagnoses and then select one that you consider the
most appropriate DSM diagnosis. Explain why one is more likely than the other.
· After reviewing recent research studies, readings in your textbook, and other
academic sources, provide a thorough description of the following:
·
· The symptoms required for a diagnosis of that disorder
· At least two possible causes of that disorder, incorporating at least one
developmental factor and at least one multicultural factor that may be involved in the
cause(s) of the disorder
· At least three of the most effective treatments available for that disorder
· At least one controversy, cultural bias, or ethical issue related to the diagnosis or
treatment of that disorder
· Ethical issues related to the use of psychiatric medications, like antidepressants, to
treat emotional disorders in children and adolescents.
Write an 8–10-page paper in Word format. Add an APA style title page and references
page and cite your sources according to current APA standards. Cite information from at
least two academic sources to support your ideas. These include your textbook, and two
peer-reviewed research articles from the AUO library.
Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical
scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources, and display accurate
spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Read the following vignettes: Emotional Disorder—Male Vignette Nadif is a seven-year-old Somali-American boy who is homeschooled by his mother. When Nadif was four years old, his family immigrated to the United States from war-torn Somalia after living in a refugee camp. His family has been concerned about him from the time they lived at the camp. He used to have an average appetite and slept relatively well. Now, he wakes in the night, often with nightmares in which he becomes lost or separated from his family. Nadif’s appetite has also been affected. He often reports stomachaches and lack of appetite. His parents describe him as “nervous” most of the time, particularly when his mother is not home. Nadif is too afraid to attend school away from his parents, so his mother has chosen to homeschool him until he feels more secure when away from his family. Nadif seems to feel relatively comfortable out in public, as long as his family accompanies him on outings. His parents are somewhat puzzled by his anxiety, as he has never been lost. Although they all experienced hardships in Somalia, none of them was a direct victim of any intensely traumatic event. Nadif claims he does not remember much of his time in Somalia. His family hopes therapy will help Nadif feel calmer when they are not present, so that he can attend school, develop friendships, and become increasingly more independent. Emotional Disorder—Female Vignette Jada is a sixteen-year-old African American girl enrolled as a junior at the local public high school. She has won numerous honors throughout her educational career for her academic performance; but her greatest joy comes from playing the piano and singing in her church choir. Jada’s vocal instructor raves about her singing voice and about her potential for a career in music. Jada hopes to attend a prestigious music school in New York City upon graduating from high school, but worries about the cost and how much she will miss her family. The pressure of an upcoming audition at school has caused Jada a great deal of stress. She fears she will not be accepted or will not be able to attend for financial reasons. The stress has begun to affect her daily functioning. She is having difficulty sleeping, has lost

Jada’s friends describe her as being “irrational” about the situation and “catastrophizing.” Despite their best efforts, they cannot convince her that she has a strong chance. At her weakest moments, Jada has even spoken passively of wishing she would die, so she would not have to face the stress anymore. During the past two weeks, Jada has been sad and tearful on most days and has lost interest in her favorite activities. Last weekend, she was caught drinking alcohol with some friends. She admitted to her parents that she has had alcohol on three separate occasions because it helps her “stop feeling stressed.” Select one of the above vignettes and analyze it by completing the following: · Identify and describe two possible emotional disorders one might consider as DSM diagnoses for this child or adolescent. Make sure you support those choices with specific symptoms observed in the vignette. · Compare and contrast the two diagnoses and then select one that you consider the most appropriate DSM diagnosis. Explain why one is more likely than the other. · After reviewing recent research studies, readings in your textbook, and other academic sources, provide a thorough description of the following: · · The symptoms required for a diagnosis of that disorder · At least two possible causes of that disorder, incorporating at least one developmental factor and at least one multicultural factor that may be involved in the cause(s) of the disorder · At least three of the most effective treatments available for that disorder · At least one controversy, cultural bias, or ethical issue related to the diagnosis or treatment of that disorder · Ethical issues related to the use of psychiatric medications, like antidepressants, to treat emotional disorders in children and adolescents.
