A committed and award winning chemist working towards professional chartership in the potable water
treatment industry, with a BSc Hons degree in chemistry from Cardiff University. I have been working in the
water industry as a process scientistfor the last 4 years managing water quality, dealing with non-
conformances and root cause identification. In that time I have brought innovation into welsh water through
technology (such as the introduction of turbidity instruments in backwash pipe work and design of new
filtration auditing techniques). I also enjoy team sports and manage a touch rugby team in my spare time.
July 2011 – Present: Process Scientist, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water
 Responsible for the appraisal of water treatment works processes involved in the treatment of water for potable use
within the south east region of Wales.
 Work reactively, solving issues concerning water treatment including issues with chemical reactions across up to 20
treatment sites as well as root cause identification and possible solutions and dealing with water quality non-
conformances
 Performing analytical techniques (jar tests and titrations)as well trend and statistical analysis to assess plant
performance
 Assess rawwater chemistry and biology to optimize chemicals maintaining appropriate levels of coagulation whilst
managing operational efficiencies
 Actively involved with innovative techniques, for example- raw water VOC monitors using bioluminescent bacteria
and assessment of benefits to DCWW.
 Introduced a new filter auditing technique taking into account bed expansion, hydraulic media sizing and statistical
checks as well as the relevant calculations that goes with this work, which was rolled out within DCWW as an
improvement to the Standard operating procedures.
 Implemented new technologies and design control philosophy to add to the treatment process such as in process
turbidity systems to assess and automate the filter washing process allowing greater control and significant cost
savings for the company.
 Researching new techniques, material and assessing whetherthey can work for our sites. Worked with external
companies and looked into new filter media’s glass and filtralite.
 I have trained and provided guidance to colleagues in techniques such as titrations.I have regularly presented
information and ideas to senior members of staff at welsh water as well as external companies HACH
 I undertook a long running project to assess portable analysis equipment used in welsh water. I worked with
external partners to procure trial equipment at no cost to DCWW. All of my reported recommendation were
instigated and are now used across welsh water. I am now considered “the go to man” for portable water testing
equipment
 Leasing and working with capital departments to deliver large scale projects on the treatment works
 Work on Drinking water safety plans and with auditors both internally and externally (DWI)
 Compliance work on environmental discharges and liaising with NRW
 Recently awarded Institute of water innovation award in the engineering solutions category for creating an advanced
filter wash control system
Oct 2007 – July 2011:Waste Transfer Chemist, BIFFA
 Manage a small group of operatives on their day to day duties, improving productivity and awareness in the
workplace as well training and improving their chemical knowledge so that they may do their job safer
 Actively review and develop standard operating procedures and promotion of updates to ensure continuity
 COSSH risk assessment and the management of chemicals and reaction processes
 Working on legislation and legal paperwork regarding waste management, to ensure legal compliance?
 Chemical data interpretation and assessing treatment options
Work Experience
 Waste transport and logistical issues including storage and disposalissues
 Knowledge of chemical properties and functional grouping
Sept 2007-Oct 2007: Audio Typist, HSBC
 I worked as part of a team transcribing phone calls to a deadline for a computer program
 Learnt to type at forty words per minute
Sept 2004 –July 2007:Chemistry student, Cardiff University
 Obtained knowledge of chemistry based mathematical assessments
 Experience with many synthetic techniques and methods including the synthesis ofheteroaromatics molecules and
of catalysts
 Experience in analytical procedures including liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy
 Versed in inorganic synthesis and theoreticalchemistry
 Proficient with many spectroscopic techniques and interpretation of data obtained from these techniques, including
NMR.
July 2006-Sept2006: Bar/ Waiting staff, The Bryncoch Inn/ Sizzlers restaurant
 I was a cleaner, barman and occasionally kitchen waiter, servicing the bar and kitchen
Aug 2005 – May 2006: Stockroom Assistant, River Island Cardiff
 I worked as a member of the warehouse team, ensuring stock was received and sorted to a high standard and strict
time scales
Sept 2003-Sept2004: Kitchen Porter, Dylan Thomas Pub/Restaurant Llansamlet
 Worked as a kitchen porter in the restaurant responsible for cleanliness and food preparation.
Nov 2001 – Mar 2002:Visteon Plant, Swansea
 Completed the Ford youth development scheme.
 Completed basic car mechanics and servicing, MIG and arc welding, basic circuits wiring and the use of equipment
such as lathes and drilling machines, also enhanced my team working, communication, numerical and IT skills.
Sept 2004 – June 2007: Cardiff University BSc Honours degree in Chemistry
In my final year of study I completed a project for which I made and tested the industrial usability of octahedral
molecular sieves as a carbon monoxide filter. Including measuring how efficient the catalyst was at converting
carbon monoxide in the air to carbon dioxide. During this time I gained experience of advanced analytical
equipment and techniques including- TPR, SEM, EDX, X-ray powder diffraction, BET and Gas chromatography
I enjoy most sports, especially rugby, basketball, golf, skiing and ice hockey. I currently manage and play in a touch
rugby team. I played ice hockey for Cardiff University. I also enjoy reading comedy and science fiction novels and
watching Formula 1. I have held a full clean driving licence for over 4 years and have my own transport.
I have also been a keen home brewer for the last 2 years and regularly produce beer throughout the year and enjoy
trying to brew different recipes with different types of hops and malts
