- Coming down the hill past St. Teilo’s last Tuesday I got down as far as Gerwyn’s fruit and veg and there was a lorry parked outside unloading, cars parked opposite and as it was around 9.30 a.m. there was plenty of tentative school run driving going on. And then I saw a big red shiny Massey Ferguson tractor with a smart new loader and a very new three axled Ifor Williams livestock trailer charging up the hill through the congestion … driven by a believing man of my acquaintance travelling some distance between his two big farms. It was as if he didn’t want to stir up his brake fluid. He was coming through. And he did. Fair play Stuart, if you’re listening, for an old bloke you were fairly pressing on. Full marks for commitment. I was in that silver Ford Fiesta that chose the pavement! Commitment to Christ. Could we, in ours, be described as ‘fairly pressing on’? I mean, why would you actually stir yourself to get out of bed and come to church today when the morning was so cold and you didn’t WANT to? Or to turn out to run a youth club, or teach a Sunday School class, or set out tables or chairs or fix the video up? Or get out of bed tomorrow to meet with God and read your Bible before WORK? This is a sermon about being committed to Christ as He is committed to fulfilling the plans and the purposes of Almighty God. Jesus sets us the example in this passage today of ‘fairly pressing on’ as He forges ahead on the road to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover, and takes His disciples aside to spell out for them what the immediate future holds. And this is the King Who calls upon us to follow Him as His disciples, those who heed the call of His Kingdom. What could ever inspire you sufficiently to do that?! Well let’s see …
- Perea ("the country beyond" in Greek), was the portion of the kingdom of Herod the Great occupying the eastern side of theJordan River valley, from about one third the way down from the Sea of Galilee to about one third the way down the eastern shore of the Dead Sea; it did not extend too far inland. Traditionally, its limits have been considered to be the eastern bank of the Jordan River between the rivers Arnon (Wadi Mujib) and Hieromax (Yarmouk River). [1] Herod the Great's Perea was the area inhabited by the Israelite Tribes Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Menasseh. New Testament commentators speak of Jesus' "Perean Ministry", beginning with his departure from Galilee (Matt 19:1; Mark 10:1) and ending with the anointing by Mary in Bethany (Matt 26) or his journey towards Jerusalem commencing from Mark 10:32. kingdom was divided by the Romans into a tetrarchy, of which Herod Antipas received both Perea and Galilee. Why has the Lord taken this route down from Galilee as He heads towards Jerusalem? There is a tradition in the Mishnah that as the pious Jew travelled from Galilee in the North to Judah and Jerusalem in the south to go to the Feasts etc., he would avoid going through Samaria – which was considered unclean neo-Gentile territory due to centuries of intermarriage and the paganised religion of the place. It appears that Jesus was travelling – as was customary – with a larger crowd of pilgrims up to the Passover feast in Jerusalem and that they skirted the spiritually compromised lands of Samaria by heading off to the East into the lands of Reuben, Gad an the half tribe of Manasseh to avoid ritual contamination. It was a well worn pilgrim trail and – authentically Jesus was following it on His determined way up to Jerusalem.
- This ‘to go up to Jerusalem’ idea is in part literal … the road up to Jerusalem from the East is a steep old climb! It will wind you. And the Songs of Ascents in the Psalms were used by pilgrims to the big annual festivals at Jerusalem as they ascended the hill of the Lord to get to the Temple at the top of the Temple Mount. These Psalms, then, speak of ‘going up to Jerusalem’ and ‘ascending the Hill of the Lord’ … and ‘going up to Jerusalem’ became the jargon of the OT language of pilgrimage. So, Psalm 122:4 has I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’ 2 Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. 4 That is where the tribes go up – the tribes of the Lord – to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel. 5 There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David.” The King over the Kingdom of God is coming to take up His throne. He is going ‘up’ to the city that was supposed to be His royal seat, and instead of enthroning Him, its’ leaders were going to crucify Him. Yet Jesus persists in leading the way there … because His Cross was going to lead to His Crown. Learned chap that he is, Luke expresses this even more clearly in Luke 9:51 “51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.”
- Jerusalem has a bit of a track record in the spiritual history of Israel. It was meant to be the governmental and religious centre of the O.T. people of God, but Jesus presents a different analysis … but that analysis builds on the earlier preaching of the great prophets like Jeremiah … Jer. 23: “among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: they commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.’ 15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says concerning the prophets: ‘I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land.’” Luke 13:34 “‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” Acts 13:27 At a later date, preaching in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, Paul picks up on all that is taking place here with Jerusalem. “The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognise Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.”
- Then following on behind their teacher, as rabbinical disciples were expected to do, came the Twelve. The word ‘Disciple’ means ‘follower’ … although that word isn’t specifically used and … but that’s what they did! They followed, and they were ‘astonished’ καὶ ἐθαμβοῦντο - θαμβέω 1) to be astonished 2) to astonish, terrify 2a) to be amazed 2b) to be frightened No doubt they were terrified because of what Jesus has just said – for the third time in a short space of time – they were NOT relishing gong up to Jerusalem for the Son of Man to be rejected, to suffer and to be crucified. Where, after all, would that leave them?! But they were His followers. So they followed Him!
- And behind and around the disciples as they followed Jesus was another crowd. There was a wider group of travellers in the party tat formed around Jesus on the way up to Jerusalem, and what we are told about them is that they were – very simply – AFRAID. The party moves on in an ominous atmosphere. But it is specifically to the Twelve alone that the Lord will be addressing His explanatory word …
- The teaching that follows is PRIVATE. “Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.” What Jesus is teaching – and what He will go on to DO, of course – is really very radical. He simply can’t trust it to the hoi polloi. He pours Himself into a few … the best men He’s got. Not the richest. Not the noisiest. Not the cleverest. The best – HIS definition.
- It is Passover time. It is the feast that celebrates God’s redemption of His people out of bondage in Egypt … the land of sin. It is the memorial of God allowing the sacrifice of a paschal lamb – perfect and spotless – so that the angel of judgement passes over them and their sin is not punished. The language of going up to the Festival is used here and these words make explicit what His followers were stunned by and dreading. He is going to spell out what they dread even more clearly …
- And the Son of Man is the One Who will be handed over. Here’ what those pilgrim families did. They bought a lamb. They handed it over. Somebody slaughtered it and for one more year their sin was all covered … so they believed. That lamb had to be spotless. Jesus was spotless. That lamb was helpless. The Lord Jesus was omnipotent. But what we see in this moment is His decision and determination. He was DETERMINED He was going to die to save you. For that to happen, the Hosts of Heaven would need to be restrained from flying to His aid. For that to happen, the hand of Heavenly Providence would HAVE to be withdrawn. The Father turned His face away. The Son of Man – Jesus knows – is going to be delivered over. Get that? The Son of Man. Daniel 7’s ruler of the cosmos, who sits on Heaven’s throne. He will be handed over – here’s the plan …
- From here on the Passion events are handled in two phases … Each phase follows from ‘the handing over’ to the respective body – first here, the leaders of the Jews in His day. Who are they? Τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς γραμματεῦσιν The chief priests The priesthood was established in Israel after the Exodus, under Aaron’s leadership … they were all Levites but not all Levites were priests (some were singers etc.) By the time of Jesus, the Biblical set-up had long gone though and they were running things much more in their own way. The Sadducees were in control of the temple. They were wealthy, aristocratic, and liberal in their theology. They did not believe in the resurrection or in angels, and they only accepted the first five books of the Bible. (The Pharisees, in contrast, were not from the tribe of Levi but could be from any tribe.) As a sect, they were ritualists, legalists, separatists, and zealots. The chief priest was supposed to be in office for life. In Jesus’s day there was one that had stepped aside but still put his oar in … it was all very unsatisfactory. They should have been those who led the worship and organised the religious life of the OT people of God, but they had long since gone well off-piste. The second lot listed amongst the Jewish leaders are the scribes. The traditional rendering of γραμματεύς (grammateu") as “scribe” does not communicate much to the modern English reader, for whom the term might mean “professional copyist,” if it means anything at all. The people referred to here were recognized experts in the law of Moses and in traditional laws and regulations. Thus “expert in the law” comes closer to the meaning for the modern reader. Amongst these, the opposing party of the Pharisees had predominance. These guys DID believe in angels, the supernatural, miracles … the opposite of the Sadducee priestly class. So what happened? The Jewish phase of the passion is presented by two verbs: They will condemn Him to death. Blasphemy will be the charge yet the blasphemy is theirs. But they don’t have the power to carry forward their verdict. Humiliating. Even more humiliatingly they have to hand Jesus over to THE GENTILES in order to get things moved further forward. The first verb: they condemned their judge. The second verb: they handed Him over to the Gentiles.
- Each of the four verbs that describe what happens next is born out in the details of the Passion as it plays out.
- Each of these elements is there in the Passion account in Mark, and each comes from the blueprint for the suffering of the Servant of the Lord in Isaiah …
- Prophesied by eighth century BC Isaiah, this whole prospect is nonetheless held completely by the hand of God. Have you ever been there? Gazing down the barrel of this thing that’s going to be and still aware that whatever comes, it comes from the hand of your loving God? Most of us would quit at the mockery … without God’s help. Have you ever been spat at in a faith communicating context? It’s a long time ago in my experience but I can say it is not nice … are you out yet? And then scourging. Oh, that scourging. There was a lot in the media a few weeks ago about the corporal punishment of a dissenting blogger in Saudi Arabia. Raif Baddawi was sentenced to be beaten every Friday after morning prayers until he’d received the astonishing total of 1,000 lashes. He received the first fifty strokes of the cane in January and this week his punishment was again postponed for the ninth consecutive week. I don’t know if you saw the footage of the caning he received. It wasn’t great. But it was not the scourging of the victim sentenced to death by the Roman authorities … Their condemned men were stripped and beaten with a cat of nine tails of leather into which were tied pieces of metal and bone that would lacerate and cut deep into the victims body exposing their internal workings. It was vile. And then the slow, tortuous, suffocating death of the Cross. The Son of Man – how will they grasp this? The One Whom they had seen still storms, heal the sick and raise the dead by no more than His Word of command … King Jesus Who was come to take up His Kingdom and power, will submit to rejection, to suffering and to death … to be His people’s Passover Lamb. Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world. How are His disciples feeling about hearing all this now? They’d started of stunned and scared BEFORE the explanation! So where is this leaving them now? Well it isn’t. It isn’t quite leaving them there … because the Son of Man rejected, suffering a dying will be the same Son of Man RAISED!
- The account of things Jesus gives here expands pretty much on the previously described elements in the Passion as set out in the two earlier descriptions (see 8:31 & 9:31) of what’s going to take place in Jerusalem. This third declaration by Jesus to His disciples about what is going to happen up at Jerusalem simply does not expand at all on what Jesus has got to say about the resurrection. On each of the three occasions that Jesus addresses the matter, the resurrection is simply stated and left. The sustained focus, then, is on Jesus’ determination and commitment to follow God’s revealed plan and purpose in the Way of the Cross.
- So how are we helped here with our feeble and faltering COMMITMENT to walk with Christ in the way of the Cross? We follow a Saviour Who SACRIFICED himself, and who did that for sheer LOVE for you and me. He did it because He loved you and me, and because there was none other good enough to pay the price of sin, and unless its price was paid then for you and me all is lost. He sacrificed Himself for us – the people on His heart. He did not commit suicide. He did not seek euthanasia. He did not die as an example. He died as a conscious, willing, determined SACRIFICE He did it in accordance with the Scriptures … and He did it for sin. He did not end His life. He did not waste His life. He did not throw His life away. He invested it in the will of His Father and in the sure and certain hope of an eternity peopled with resurrected, saved sinners – once helpless but now ineffably helped … grace-bought and freed sinners like you and me. That’s what He did. And here’s what faith says in response: ‘If Jesus Christ is God And He died for me Then nothing is too much for me to do for Him.’ It says He is my hero, my inspiration and my example. It says I’m going to follow that Jesus wherever He goes. And His disciples carried on towards Jerusalem.
