Editor's Notes

  1. There are fundamentally three broken disciples in this account of the impact of the resurrection of Jesus on His followers. By the end of it … One believes One doesn’t yet and isn’t saying anything One can recount what she’s actually SEEN, but we have no idea what she thinks is the significance of what she’s seen so we can’t really tell whether she’s believing yet And that’s why John writes in v. 10 that ‘they’ (plural) “They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.” This is a series on recycling broken disciples, where the post resurrection experiences of the earliest disciples teach us what it takes to get broken disciples back on track following the Lord … think of it as an extended set of case studies in the run up to Christmas. Now – in a sense that’s a tiny bit misleading because you can’t really see pre-Pentecost disciples as being believers in the sense we know now. These people were not ‘born again’ in the post-Pentecost sense. They had not received the Spirit in the sense described post-Pentecost nor had they benefitted from any subsequent spiritual blessing, filling, anointing nor anything of the sort. But as far as discipleship went at THAT time … just following Jesus around … they were not quite in the relationship with Him that they had been before all the traumatic things that led to and through Calvary, and now they are rattled by their experience of resurrection. And from the end of our own reflection on our times of being rattled, and from the point of view of what HUMANs should do to restore their following of Jesus, there are lessons to be drawn here to help us. So let’s get to grips with what is happening here …
  2. Anne Brown has been speaking at the 2015 conference of The Fellowship of Evangelists in the Universities of Europe this week Is the bible sexist? No. "Women were first at the cradle, last at the cross & first at the resurrection.“ That wouldn’t have happened if Annas or Caiaphas had been dictating the course of events! Now, it is fascinating that John singles her out, without mentioning “Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome” listed out in Mark 16:1 Why John does not mention the other women is not clear, but Mary probably becomes the focus of the author’s attention because it was she who came and found Peter and the beloved disciple and informed them of the empty tomb (20:2). John lets us know others were there because in v. 2 Mary Magdalene uses the first person plural to say “‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!’” Merrill Tenney in his commentary on John’s gospel: “In presenting the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection, John deals more with its effect on human personality than with the material proofs the Western mind would prefer.” It’s a good point. Some of the greatest faith enhancing evidence for Jesus arises not from the academy but from the cutting coal face of the Kingdom of God and is the evidence of bad lives changed for good!
  3. So here comes Mary Magdalene … first to the resurrection. The first day of the week would be early Sunday morning. The Sabbath (and in this year the Passover) would have lasted from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Saturday. Sunday would thus mark the first day of the following week. It was the first day of the week – the Sabbath having ended the evening of the day before at sunset. Mary was up while it was still ‘dark’ … σκοτία 1) darkness 2) the darkness due to want of light 3) metaph. used of ignorance of divine things, and its associated wickedness, and the resultant misery in hell And in that ‘darkness’ (is this John’s symbolism of dark and light here … and is that being signalled to us by the fact that John says she could literally see what had happened with the stone at the door of the tomb?
  4. Well it was still dark (whether literally or metaphorically) and she could nonetheless see that the stone sealing the door was ἠρμένον The verb used is αἴρω 1) to raise up, elevate, lift up 1a) to raise from the ground, take up: stones 1b) to raise upwards, elevate, lift up: the hand 1c) to draw up: a fish 2) to take upon one's self and carry what has been raised up, to bear 3) to bear away what has been raised, carry off 3a) to move from its place 3b) to take off or away what is attached to anything 3c) to remove 3d) to carry off, carry away with one 3e) to appropriate what is taken 3f) to take away from another what is his or what is committed to him, to take by force 3g) to take and apply to any use 3h) to take from among the living, either by a natural death, or by violence 3i) cause to cease Matthew describes in a more detailed way how an angel had blasted this heavy stone up and out and away from the channel in which it ran and was held shut by gravity and weight, but all we’ve got here is … “that the stone had been removed from the entrance.”
  5. “So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!’” Now look what is happening here … this is really important for us if we either ARE or ARE HELPING people w hose discipleship’s been damaged: The crucial principle is this. It isn’t her eyes that are deceiving her, it’s what the mind does with the evidence of her eyes She saw EXACTLY and ACCURATELY what had physically happened with that stone She perceived wrongly and inaccurately what this signified. She saw exactly what it was that had happened with the stone, but fell down completely when it came to interpreting it. Tell me that isn’t at the root of the stumbling of MANY toppled disciples! No don’t, because it is! We see ‘Christians’ behaving badly and give up on God, rather than recognise His patience with sinners. We see hard days and experience tough times and feel our entitlements have been breached, instead of grasping tight to His grace that sustains strugglers. We feel wronged by other people we want to be ‘perfect’ to us, and forget our great (human) need of mercy. And we see the significance of those sightings and experiences as discrediting the Gospel of Grace, when in fact it’s the Gospel of Grace that explains those phenomena to us in a way that abandoning the message never will. Yes the tomb was empty, but: ‘They’ had done no such thing with the Lord, and The disciples had plainly been told where they would find Him even before His traumatic death and resurrection. It’s not seeing things that causes disciples to stumble, but the interpretation or significance we put upon them.
  6. These two men have heard from the leading woman Mary, alarmingly because of what she says to them. She hasn’t just told them the details, she’s mainly interpreted what she’s seen, and done so wrongly. Incidentally, discipleship gets broken too by the interpretations given of observable phenomena … be CAREFUL not to get distracted from Jesus because of someone else’s inadequate analysis! What would have happened differently here if Mary had reported what she’d seen with her eyes (rolled off stone, empty tomb) and passed on the Word of God through the angel, not her panic?! Mark16:7 “go, tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” As it was, her faithless failure to convey God’s message about what she’d seen led to panic and disruption of discipleship … because those disciples did NOT immediately set out for Galilee. So what are we told? The other disciple (the ‘beloved disciple’) ran on ahead more quickly than Peter, so he arrived at the tomb first. This verse has been a chief factor in depictions of John as a young man (especially combined with traditions that he wrote last of all the gospel authors and lived into the reign of Domitian). But the verse does not actually say anything about John’s age, nor is age always directly correlated with running speed … as sleek, fit examples of middle aged manhood here present surely testify … (joking). Incidentally, this is a rare instance of men of this time and culture running. Romans ran, but Jewish – certainly pious Jewish – men didn’t except in the most extreme of circumstances. The only other passage in the NT that refers to running (apart from metaphorical use or references to an athletic contest) is Matthew 28:8 which describes how the women ran to bring the disciples the news. They were RATTLED by what Mary said, but their fundamental dispodsition’s still ‘searching’ … so they RAN out to the tomb outside town.
  7. What Peter did Simon – you notice – dives straight in … although John paused as we’ll see outside the door. I guess it’s fair to say this was possibly an expression of his character. We NEED to make allowance NOT to excuse each other’s bad behaviour lightly, but to make room for the varying strengths and weaknesses of our personalities … even when Christian leaders act like Peter in ways that their personalities incline them … not to excuse sin but to recognise other people’s pitfalls and dangers are in synch with the expression of their personality, which will seem out of synch with the expressions of ours! Peter’s always the first bloke on the zip wire. What Peter saw Peter noticed the detailed arrangement of the grave clothes Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea had got their servants to provide that dark Good Friday. The arrangement is terribly significant, and John fully appreciates the detail. Now, the notes in the NET Bible can be excellent, but I have to say I do think them eccentric at this point. The note on this verse rambles on around the bushes but doesn’t give a reason for what it says. You see, the text here is saying that the body windings and the head windings of the grave clothes on Jesus were found in two separate piles where His body vacated them. But the NET notes (with no good reason stated that I can grasp) say otherwise. Just be careful with the notes in your Bible – they’re no excuse for not engaging brain yourself! As Merrill Tenney says: “A robber would not have left them in good order. He would have stripped the body completely …” (looking for jewellery etc. to steal) “… leaving the clothing in a disorderly heap; or he would have taken the body, graveclothes and all.” What you’ve actually got here is clothes in the same position the Lord had vacated them … a further strong evidence of His bodily, physical resurrection.
  8. Now we need to deal with ‘the other disciple’ Who is John’s ‘other disciple’? The disciple whom Jesus loved is referred to, specifically, six times in John's gospel: It is this disciple who, while reclining beside Jesus at the Last Supper, asks Jesus who it is that will betray him, after being requested by Peter to do so.[Jn 13:23-25] Later at the crucifixion, Jesus tells his mother, "Woman, here is your son", and to the Beloved Disciple he says, "Here is your mother."[Jn 19:26-27] When Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb, she runs to tell the Beloved Disciple and Peter. The two men rush to the empty tomb and the Beloved Disciple is the first to reach the empty tomb. However, Peter is the first to enter.[Jn 20:1-10] In John 21, the last chapter of the Gospel of John, the Beloved Disciple is one of seven fishermen involved in the miraculous catch of 153 fish.[Jn 21:1-25] [4] Also in the book's final chapter, after Jesus implies the manner in which Peter will die, Peter sees the Beloved Disciple following them and asks, "What about him?" Jesus answers, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!"[John 21:20-23] Again in the gospel's last chapter, it states that the very book itself is based on the written testimony of the disciple whom Jesus loved.[John 21:24] The other Gospels do not mention anyone in parallel circumstances who could be directly linked to the Beloved Disciple. For example, in Luke 24:12, Peter runs alone to the tomb. Mark, Matthew and Luke do not mention any one of the twelve disciples having witnessed the crucifixion. There are also two references to an unnamed "other disciple" in John 1:35-40 and John 18:15-16, which may be to the same person based on the wording in John 20:2 The closing words of John's Gospel state explicitly concerning the Beloved Disciple that "It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.“ This testimony to the bodily resurrection of Jesus is coming from the pen of the person who saw all this. What did he see? When he turned up he bent over in the morning light to peer in through the low squeeze-space of the door … a small gap in the rock Peter would soon pile in through … What he saw there was the evidence of the grave clothes … what significance did John put upon this? We don’t know yet … but we know where he’s going to end up very shortly. He SAW … but what did he do with the eye-balling that went on here? He HESITATED, until Peter piled through. And after that? What did he do? He went inside. You’ve got to be ready to get up close and personal with the facts and the evidence of Jesus. When we’ve stumbled it can sometimes seem too painful, too risky to get up close with Him. That thinking has really got to be overcome, or the job’s going to run from bad to worse. Finally John also went inside. And when he did, now he could see … and he believed. What was it that the beloved disciple believed (since v. 7 describes what he saw)? Sometimes it is suggested that what he believed was Mary Magdalene’s report that the body had been stolen. But this could hardly be the case; the way the entire scene is narrated such a trivial conclusion would amount to an anticlimax. It is true that the use of the plural “they” in the following verse can be applied to both Peter and the beloved disciple, and this appears to be a difficulty if one understands that the beloved disciple believed at this point in Jesus’ resurrection. But it is not an insuperable difficulty, since all it affirms is that at this time neither Peter nor the beloved disciple had understood the scripture concerning the resurrection. What’s more, it seems perfectly plausible John (the cautious eyewitness to all that’s being described) is contrasting himself with the ’they’ in v. 9 He believed, but THEY (Peter and Mary Magdalene at the very least) didn’t yet believe in that way … The expression used here for John’s believing is the very same as in John 20:31 “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe[b] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
  9. The author does not explicitly mention what OT scripture is involved (neither does Paul in 1 Cor 15:4, for that matter). The resurrection of the Messiah in general terms may have been seen in Isa 53:10-12 and Ps 16:10. Specific references may have been understood in Jonah 1:17 and Hos 6:2 because of the mention of “the third day.” Beyond this it is not possible to be more specific. John it appears HAS believed, but the ‘they’ in these verses simply didn’t understand how Jesus had fulfilled in the very events they’d observed and which had stumbled them, all that was promised in the Law and the Prophets. So that failure to understand observed phenomena THROUGH THE LENS OF THE SCRIPTURES … had a devastating effect on their discipleship. They’d been told to go on and meet Him, risen, in Galilee?
  10. But the disciples went BACK, to where they were STAYING. Is this what they had been told to do? You don’t mend broken, staggering discipleship in that way … but the accustomed and the familiar feel ’safe’. Is that true? Or is the ‘security’ of what we’re used to, or comfortable with, often just a tempting deception? They went back. Do you know, it’s often not ‘going back’ that will magically mend broken discipleship. Often where you were is what caused the breakdown in the first place. The old model was broken. It is far more important to walk in the light of what you’ve now been shown from the Scripture – what God has told you about how to move on to stay in His revealed will for you. So WHY did their broken discipleship STAGNATE?
  11. Mary’s just not worked out the significance of what she was seeing. She’s seen the truth, but for all her in principle allegiance to Jesus, she has not yet got the point or seen its significance. The greatest miracle is no use until the Spirit opens out the understanding. Many people whose outward discipleship seems broken still sit there. Facts lie revealed to them, but these dear folk remain strangers to those facts point and significance. Is there a chance – anyone listening either here or online – that this is the situation with you? Pray thsat God will make the point of it PLAIN to you.
  12. Look at the facts that these men already know! They’ve spent THREE years at Jesus University! More than that, Jesus has been their personal tutor, and they’ve been at the top of the class He was running with 24-7 eyeball-contact access, to the Living Lord Himself. Peter: “… went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped round Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.” He SAW it, but He didn’t get it. Peter went back to the place he was staying. Mary’s testimony to what she didn’t understand left Peter grasping fundamentally crucial truth … the HE didn’t understand. Only John saw this (second) – and believed. Please pray that people who are broken disciples will know the truth. It MAY actually be the first time they’ve heard it, because many in visible Biblical churches still alarmingly don’t know the truth that sets free. But it’s far more likely that whilst their heads have taken in the relevant data, they simply ain’t grasped its significance … the rubber never contacted the road. They still didn’t understand from the Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead … and only John suddenly saw the significance of it all. And he’s still passionate in his reason for writing this … v. 30
  13. “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” But the disciples went back to where they were staying. THAT is the hurdle we have GOT to get over. Broken disciples NEED to never be the same again. Pray. God is the One Who opens the eyes of the understanding. Pray my friends. Oh yes, please pray.
