Launch of the Imagine! Community Action Network
Programme
Central Singapore CDC invites youths to put their imagination to benefit others and
give back. Through the Imagine! Programme, youths are empowered to initiate their
own community projects that will benefit residents in the Central Singapore District.
The youths will be assisted with funding of either $2000 for small-scale projects or up
to $10,000 for large-scale projects along with mentoring support as well as link-ups
with the CDC’s partners.
Food Ration Project
A group of National University of Singapore (NUS) students studied the current
system of food ration distribution. They discovered that the beneficiaries often do not
consume all items within the pack, which resulted in unnecessary wastage.
The innovative students then developed a more efficient model, where the elderly
could “shop” for food rations through a point system and redeem items of their
choice. The CDC helped linked them up with a corporate partner, GlobblerShop, which
provides most of the ration items.

“We decided to implement this food ration project as we saw a need
on the ground. Previously, food rations were distributed in a ‘take-it-
or-leave-it’ situation. This results in a wastage of items as residents
who are unable to consume certain items will throw them away. We
felt that it would be a good idea to allow the elderly to choose their
ration items instead, so as to reduce food wastage and also enable
them to make independent choices.”

In the past, the ration packs
normally contain Milo or biscuits.
