2. ‘Have a heart! Don’t neglect
heart’
• Noted cardiologist and director, Cath Lab, Max Super Speciality
Hospital, New Delhi, Dr Viveka Kumar is one of the handful of
cardiac surgeons in India who has been successfully experimenting
with break through techniques so as to give maximum relief to
cardiac patients. The latest feather in his already ornate cap is
implantation of bio-absorbable stents which get absorbed in the
body within 6-8 months. Dr Viveka who has been credited with more
than 7,500 angioplasties and 2,500 balloon Valvotemies with good
outcome, talked about other latest development in interventional
cardiology in a special interview with Hindustan times , on Saturday.
This specialist, who is credited with having trained the very first set
of doctors in angioplasty and angiography several years back, was
in the city to attend ‘Aroygyam’ national conference-cum-health
mela organized by Allahabad Nursing Home Welfare Association at
NCZCC.
3. What are the latest Developments in the field
of interventional cardiology?
• We had been doing successful trials of
bio-absorbable stents in coronary heart
disease patients for keeping the arteries
open. We have done 12 successful
surgeries so far. It is 100% successful
technique.
4. What is the advantage of bio-absorbable stent over
the metallic stent generally used in cardiac surgery?
• The biggest advantage is that patient, in whom this bio-
absorbable, need not take blood thinner medicines life-
long. They face less risk of suffering from thrombosis
i.e. formation of blood clot Inside a blood vessel
resulting into obstruction of the flow of blood. The bio-
absorbable stents get absorbed in the body within 6-8
months. Moreover, the metallic residue does not remain
in the body, as is the case with metal stents. The cost of
bio-absorbable stent is slightly higher-it costs around
Rs1.75 lakh per stent.
5. Being one of the handful experts of
percutaneous valve replacement surgery, how
does it benefit patients?
• See, in this surgery we replace the valve without
opening the heart. Very few cardiac surgeons in India
are trained in this technique is that patient is no longer
forced to undergo open heart surgery in which lots of
risks are involved. There are no scars in this technique.
It is especially recommended for elderly patients or
those who suffer from other complications like diabetes
and high B.P. The success rate is also the same as open
heart surgery though the valve costs around Rs10 lakh.
