The answer lies in the way our apartments are constructed.
In order to save costs, most builders lay down pipes from the overhead tanks through multiple inlets in your homes.
Which makes it very complicated for a meter to be installed as you would need more than one meter in your home. But the question is - how would anyone take readings?
Introducing WaterOn - the world’s first 100% smart and automated water metering system. WaterOn is completely wireless, self powered and real time.
With WaterOn you can Measure accurately and more frequently. You can monitor a household's water consumption in real time 24/7.
Since you can monitor in real time, you can also detect any abnormal consumption such as a leaky loo or a sudden pipe burst.
All such events are reported to the user instantly as they happen.
Moreover, WaterOn also has a remote operable ball valve to help you take preventive actions. Saving money was never so easy!
Since the beginning, WaterOn’s development was centered around high rise buildings. Since most of the high rise buildings have multiple entries of pipes, WaterOn meters are installed at each entry.
Installation can be very easy if the meters are installed when the building is constructed. But it doesn’t mean that we can’t install meters in an existing building – we would need a plumber who can access the pipe, cut a piece and put the meter and it’s done.
Multiple meters in one apartment help the resident monitor each consumption node individually. So you can know whether it’s your wife or daughter who consumes most water or it’s you!
We also realised that even if make world’s most beautiful water meter, nobody would want to look at it. People want readings and data.
So far a normal meter counter would display a set of numbers and you would need to know what the numbers mean.
We spoke to 100s of people and all they wanted was a simple way to understand their consumption.
The meters send each consumption data to the servers where it’s processed and made available to the user on their smartphones.
A user can look at the data in detail to help them understand their consumption and also figure out if someone else was using their shower while they were away.
The app also alerts the user for any leakages.
The user can also shut off the valve to that inlet remotely – yes, from anywhere in the world. It’s just the right amount of data to help the user become conscious.
The apartments complexes or the utility provider on the other hand get a detailed dashboard of their water consumption and bill management.
The dashboard is designed after speaking to more than 100 apartment managers. You can view how much water was sourced and supplied in your apartment.
You can see what was the lowest and highest consumption. The dashboard also compares your apartment vs similar apartments of your size and capacity.
The home screen also shows billing status as well.
The apartment managers can raise bills for residents even in the middle month which helps solve the problem of mounting account receivables as traditionally a utility can only send bills once every six months resulting in a lot of unpaid bills.
The water bill for residents take the billing to the next level.
The bill not only presents the bill data but also presents a 6 month historical view of the consumption.
It also compares the resident’s consumption in their own neighborhood. Sometimes the biggest motivator is someone else doing better than you!
Our first project was commissioned in October 2015. Since then we have measured nearly 12 million litres of water, raised more than 8000 leakage alerts helping people save as much as 35% water by fixing their faulty plumbing or by changing habits.
We are increasing our product portfolio and adding more products to expand our reach and serve multiple markets.
In my travels to South East Asia, I found that the region despite getting plentiful rains were the first ones to adopt water metering at scale.
We have developed an optical sensor based reader which not only takes readings but is also able to detect leaks by deploying multiple low energy sensors.
For DIY enthusiasts, we have come up with a WiFi based device which is under field trials right now with a confirmed order from a Dutch company.
We are also in the process of setting up RF based solutions in small gated communities of independent houses.
At the moment, we are targeting 7 Indian cities – Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Delhi with an opportunity pipeline of nearly 100,000 apartments. We are taking small but solid steps to increase our footprint as we truly believe in the philosophy of inch wide mile deep.
Each of the dots represent active inquiries and ongoing discussions. Initially we never thought that we would get interests from European countries because there’s no water stress. However, we are talking to companies from Finland and the Netherlands who have expressed interest in taking up distribution for the products.
