- We are lucky to live in a world that provides relatively easy access to images released under a Creative Common license, which changes copyright from All Rights Reserved to Some rights reserved.
- Thankfully, there are there are many places that we can go to find these kinds of images. Google and Flickr have built in CC only searched. Pixabay only has CCO contributions and includes photos and illustrations. Wikimedia contains not only photos but other kinds of media, too.
- Metropolitan Museum of Art – many images that are CC0 Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, many CC0 Rijks museum, Amsterdam. All CC0 National Gallery of Art, US. Some released to Public Domain, and you can search by license National gallery, UK – CC-BY-NC-ND British Museum UK – CC-BY-NC-ND []having technical difficulties] Notable Mention: OpenGLAM, part of the open knowledge network. Collection of open collections – doesn’t seem to be working right now. Non-Honorable mentions: Smithsonian wimps out by saying some of their work may be public domain. Tate, non-commercial, no derivatives. use only and only part of the collection (that you can’t search specifically for)
- Last summer, ISU made a open textbook for our Intro to Communication course, that every incoming Freshman is required to take.
- The textbook was a combination of two different open books, as well as some original content written by ISU faculty. And because we were planning to release the book under a CC license, I wanted to make sure all of the images were also CC licensed.
- Many of the images in the wikibook were uploaded by a user “Spaynton” and credited as “own work” – which I assume is Scott T Paynton, from Humboldt State, one of the stated authors of the wikibook. In the beginning, I didn’t question them. But then I ran across this picture, which was clearly scanned from somewhere and then uploaded.
- And while these three photos could very will be the users own work, I came across this urban dictionary logo also credited and uploaded as “own work.” While I’m sure Spayton wasn’t maliciously uploading content, I made the choice not to trust anything they uploaded. And they were low quality, even for online works. Original (unedited) text had images that were in the original version. All three of these photos were uploaded by a user “spaynton” which I assume one of the authors of the wiki book – Scott T. Paynton at Humboldt State University. Then I noticed that his upload had been tagged by the ogrebot of the Wikimedia commons. While this is not a bad thing, it can indicate a use who is not contributing things correctly. Then I started to look at the rest of the things uploaded by the user, and noticed that they were only the items being used in the Survey of Communications wikibook. Again, not necessarily bad, but somewhat concerning. And then I saw the urban dictionary logo identified as “own work.” This is clearly not the case – In fact, it looks like it was taken from a screen shot from the webpage. While I’m sure the user wasn’t maliciously uploading content, This was my final clue that the images that were uploaded by spaynton could not be completely trusted. Also they were really low quality, even for online.
- There were other images that were clearly used appropriately, like this one of diplomats that was uploaded by the Kremlin.
- And then there were images that weren’t spaynton, but still seemed fishy to me, like this one, titled “Gay Couple family”. I liked this picture, but I didn’t truest how it was credited in Wikimedia, and I wanted a higher quality version. So I decided to take a look to see if I could source this one. I started on the morgue file site, and could not find it using several different keyword searches.
- So I turned to google image search… When I dropped it into Google image search, the “best bet” for it’s name was “you miss your kids.” Turns out, this image has made the rounds! I started looking for instances BEFORE Wikipedia. Oila. 2012. I then limited it to posts before 2012.
- The earliest I found was 2002 – the Global Christian center. Sure enough, the image was there. But the site was definitely NOT from 2002 – responsive, was using HTML5/css3 to style the photo.
- Next stop – the wayback machine, to see what the global Christian center looked like in 2002. The first instance of it crawled was in 2004, and None of the pages in 2004 and 2005 were accessible – got a 404. The first working version of the site was in 2010, and the first archived version of the particular article was 2012. And the image wasn’t used. So somewhere along the line, someone added this image when they updated the site. I repeated this process a couple of more times using the earliest dated instances with similar results: once I found the earliest version of the page, the image wasn’t there. I was getting nowhere.
- So I went back to my google image search, and saw a large cluster of images started to appear in 2010 and 2011. So I focused on those years. I found a couple if larger format versions that had been published on Korean blogs. When I looked at these Korean pages, they were full of other stock images, so I knew the images had to be coming from somewhere.
- So I downloaded the version of the photo from the Korean site and re-did the search, just to see if I would get a different results set. Sure enough, this time it used the keywords “the secret to family happiness” instead of “you miss your kids.” Lesson: when it searches images, google takes into account the size and resolution of the photo as well as the content of the photo.
- I them limited google to just large format versions on the off chance that it would find the one that was originally uploaded by the stock photographer. In the very first row, I ran across an instance of the photo being credited!!!
- And so we came back to morguefile. I started to get excited to finally put a possible artist name to the picture. However, the link didn’t work.
- Back to google again – this time searching for “ Karparti Morguefile.” It was starting to look promising! I certainly was getting closer, since now I even had a last name… However, the link was once again dead. But, looking at the hit list, the third link had a file name that was similar to the version from the Korean site, AND listed Karparti, Gabor, and morguefile in the same place!
- This certainly was not the same photo, but it did seem like it might have been the same user, and the file name was similar to the one that I found on the Korean blog. So, I followed the Pin back to it’s original source. And finally found…. GaborfromHungary.
- And after a quick search through his 3,777 photographs, I found the one in question – uploaded 6 years, 8 months, 2 weeks and four days ago – on the day that I took this screen shot. I calculated that to some time around July 2010. and indeed the first verified instances of this photo appeared in late 2010. This user joined the site soon after it was created – mid-1996.
- And according to the terms, only that last user was properly attributing the file. Sigh. BUT! It was a file that could be used.
- I also find it fascinating that this image has been used in so many different ways, and has been interpreted in many different ways. Which I suppose is what good stock photography is supposed to be!
