Thermal Comfort in Green Buildings
5. 29 August 20205
Definition ISO 7730: Thermal comfort is the
condition of mind that expresses satisfaction
with thermal environment.
6x factors have a major influence on the
sensation of thermal comfort:
▪ Air temperature [°C]
▪ Relative humidity [%]
▪ Air velocity [m/s]
▪ Mean radiant temperature [°C],
▪ Metabolic rate [met]
▪ Clothing index [clo]
1. What is Thermal Comfort
Thermal Comfort is a matter of many parameters
– NOT only the air temperature
6. 29 August 2020
6x factors: Mean radiant temperature [°C]
6
1. What is Thermal Comfort
If relatively small temperature differences
exist between the surfaces => linear form:
7. 29 August 2020
6x factors: Metabolic rate [Met]
7
1. What is Thermal Comfort
Energy released by metabolism depend on
muscular activity.
Metabolism is measured in Met
(1 Met = 58.15 W/m2 of body surface).
A normal adult has a surface area of 1.7 m2,
and a person in thermal comfort with an
activity level of 1 Met will thus have a heat
loss of approximately 100W.
8. 29 August 2020
6x factors: Clothing index [Clo]
8
1. What is Thermal Comfort
1 Clo = Insulation value of 0.155 m2*C/W
Calculation of Clo-value

6x main factors
▪ Age
Sensation of old people and younger people
▪ Adaptation
People in warm climates may adapt to hot
environment
▪ Sex
Women: lower skin temp., evap loss and lower
met. rate
Clothing and preferent of temp.

Method 1: Prediction of Thermal Comfort (PMV/PPD method)
Thermal Comfort can only be maintained when heat produced by
metabolism equals the heat lost from body.
Developed by Prof. P. O. Fanger (Denmark)
2. How to Design/Assess Thermal Comfort in Buildings
11. 29 August 202011
Method 1: Thermal Comfort ZONE
(PMV/PPD method)
ASHRAE Standard 55 (of USA) uses
the PMV model to set the
requirements for indoor thermal
conditions.
It requires that at least 80% of the
occupants be satisfied.
2. How to Design/Assess Thermal Comfort in Buildings
12. 29 August 202012
Method 1: Thermal Comfort ZONE
(PMV/PPD method)
CEN Standard: EN-16798 of Europe
2. How to Design/Assess Thermal Comfort in Buildings
13. 29 August 202013
Method 2: Adaptive Thermal Comfort
The adaptive model is based on the idea
that outdoor climate influences indoor
comfort because humans can adapt to
different temperatures during different
times of the year.
This method are also implemented in
ASHRAE Standard 55 and CEN
Standard: EN-16798
2. How to Design/Assess Thermal Comfort in Buildings
** Operative temperature: The temperature
sensed by people, takes into account not only
the temperature of the indoor air, but also the
temperature of the surfaces (floor, walls, ceiling
and windows).
