HUDSON VALLEY GAY & LESBIAN
CENTER
OCTOBER 2013 VOL. # ONE ISSUE #1
The statistics on LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual,Transgender,Queer) youth are
alarming. Theyare five times more likely to be
battling depression and almost tentimes more
likely to report attempting suicide. Almost 50%
percentof homeless youth are part of the
LGBTQ community and two thirds of all LGBTQ
students report dealing with some form of
harassment or bullying at school. With the
recentmass media coverage of countless
LGBTQ youth suicides, something needsto be
done. Manyof these kids feel like they have
nobody to talk to and ultimately choose to end
their lives. This can be avoided or stopped in
time, if they have the right support system and
resources available to them. This is why Gay
and Lesbian Community Centersare so very
important to the community.
