New York! New York!
A group of students and tutors from the Television and Film Production and Game
Design programs have just returned from a week spent in New York City. While in New
York they got an intimate look at University Of Cumbria alumni and professionals working
in the field. They were able to visit the production house that produced 60% of the adverts
aired during the Super bowl. Michael Mitchell, head tutor of the Television and Film
program, stated “the idea started after a conversation had with Maxwell Robison, who runs
the game design course, we thought it would be good if we could have a trip somewhere.”
After asking students where they wanted to go, researching and looking up costs, the students
decided that they would like to go to New York. The University was generous enough to
provide students with a New York City pass that gave them access to renowned sights such as
The Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Centre and many of the city’s famous museums. Students
were also able to explore the city on their own. Upon return, students had a lot to say about
the city. One production student, Ruwaydah Seidu-Osman said “I really enjoyed how diverse
it was; there were so many people and cultures blended together. It’s awesome that there is
always something to do, it really is the city that never sleeps.” Another student, Fil
Cumberland, had mixed feelings about the experience saying “It was a very interesting trip, I
enjoyed it, but it was very cold and I could never picture myself living here, it’s too busy and
loud, I much prefer England.” The experience was said to be very eye opening and rewarding
for both students and tutors. Not only did it excite them about the fields that they are studying
but it also brought a lot of insight to the tutors, as Michael Mitchell put it “It’s about a much
more holistic approach to education, books are great, but when you go and experience a
different culture it can be really informative and inspiring. We had shared experience as
2. tutors and students which helps us to understand each other and helps to make us better
teachers and students.”
