The social progress index measures the extent to which countries provide for the social and environmental needs
of their citizens. Indicators in the area of basic needs, foundations of wellbeing, and opportunity to progress show
the relative performance of nations.
This study aims to compare social progress in West African countries with reference to data provided by the social
progress imperative group (www.socialprogressimperative.org/publications). Original data included all countries,
but this analysis excludes all other countries outside West Africa.

Social Progress index is a computation of parameters such as, Basic human needs(food, shelter, safety, water
supply), Foundations of wellbeing (basic knowledge, basic information and communications, stable ecosystem,
health and wellness), and opportunity (Personal rights, freedom and choice, advanced education, tolerance and
inclusion).

- 2. As the results of the social Progress convey, West Africa is underperforming on social progress index despite its
economic advantages. Hence, parameters that constitute the computations of the social project index such as
basic human needs, wellbeing, and opportunities should be looked into by west African nations with the sole
purpose of all round development.
West African nations ranked according to their respective
social index scores. Ghana, Senegal Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo,
and Mali fall under developing nations category. Liberia,
Nigeria, Niger, and Guinea are underdeveloped nations. Others
have their data unavailable, and are therefore are unclassified.
Comparison of west Africa with
