7. Thestomachmusthavecarefulattention.Itmustnotbekeptin
continualoperation.Givethismisusedandmuch-abusedorgan
somepeaceandquietandrest.Afterthestomachhasdoneitswork
foronemeal,donotcrowdmoreworkuponitbeforeithashada
chancetorestandbeforeasufficientsupplyofgastricjuiceis
providedbynaturetocareformorefood.Fivehoursatleastshould
elapsebetweeneachmeal,andalwaysbearinmindthatifyouwould
giveitatrial,youwouldfindthattwomealsarebetterthanthree.—

8. Inmanycasesthefaintnessthatleadstoadesirefor
foodisfeltbecausethedigestiveorganshavebeentoo
severelytaxedduringtheday.Afterdisposingofone
meal,thedigestiveorgansneedrest.Atleastfiveorsix
hoursshouldintervenebetweenthemeals;andmost
personswhogivetheplanatrial,willfindthattwo
mealsadayarebetterthanthree.—

10. Manyindulgeinthepernicioushabitofeatingjustbeforesleepinghours.
Theymayhavetakenthreeregularmeals;yetbecausetheyfeelasenseof
faintness,asthoughhungry,willeatalunchorfourthmeal.Byindulgingthis
wrongpractice,ithasbecomeahabit,andtheyfeelasthoughtheycouldnot
sleepwithouttakingalunchbeforeretiring.Inmanycases,thecauseofthis
faintnessisbecausethedigestiveorganshavebeenalreadytooseverelytaxed
throughthedayindisposingofunwholesomefoodforceduponthestomach
toofrequently,andintoogreatquantities.Thedigestiveorgansthustaxed
becomeweary,andneedaperiodofentirerestfromlabortorecovertheir
exhaustedenergies.Asecondmealshouldneverbeeatenuntilthestomach
hashadtimetorestfromthelaborofdigestingtheprecedingmeal.Ifathird
mealbeeatenatall,itshouldbelight,andseveralhoursbeforegoingtobed.

theamountoffoodswallowedasonthelengthoftimeit

12. Immediatelyaftereatingthereisastrongdraught
uponthenervousenergy.Thebrainforceiscalled
intoactiveexercisetoassistthestomach;therefore,
whenthemindorbodyistaxedheavilyaftereating,
theprocessofdigestionishindered.Thevitalityof
thesystem,whichisneededtocarryontheworkin
onedirection,iscalledawayandsettoworkin

13. Inordertohavehealthydigestion,foodshouldbeeatenslowly.
Thosewhowishtoavoiddyspepsia,andthosewhorealizetheir
obligationtokeepalltheirpowersintheconditionwhichwill
enablethemtorenderthebestservicetoGod,willdowellto
rememberthis.Ifyourtimetoeatislimited,donotboltyourfood,
buteatless,andeatslowly....Thosewhoareexcited,anxious,orina
greathurrywoulddowellnottoeatuntiltheyhavefoundrestor
relief;forthevitalpowers,alreadyseverelytaxed,cannotsupplythe
