90% of the job seekers wait for the jobs to appear on the job boards and then apply for it. It is reactive job search.
But Proactive job search is you go tap the hidden job market for opportunities and land in your dream job.
How to execute that ?
2. WHO IS A PROACTIVE JOB
SEEKER ?
Being a proactive job seeker means that you’re
searching out for opportunities before they come up
on a job board or company website. This can be
accomplished in many ways and is primarily referred
to as accessing the hidden job market.
The idea is that, by incorporating various methods,
you’re staying one step ahead of your competition.
3. HOW CAN YOU BECOME A
PROACTIVE JOB SEEKER ?
Proactive job search is more about tapping the hidden
job market. About 60-70 % of the job seekers rely on
the advertised job search methods. So I’m telling you
that this is more effective than reactive job search.
Here’s how you become one.
4. TARGET THE EMPLOYERS
WHO YOU WANT TO WORK
FOR
The first step is to identify your employer, make a list
of employers who you want to work with. Research
about those employers and connect with current
employees or decision makers of those organizations
on LinkedIn. Connect with them over a personalized
invite.
5. NETWORKING
Build a healthy professional relationship with them by
asking them for career advice, introduction. Expand
your network beyond known people. Don’t be in a
hurry to ask them for a job by connecting with them.
Craft your message carefully before you send them
out. Don’t be in a hurry to ask for a referral or job
vacancy straight away.
6. PRESENTING YOURSELF
The way you present yourself to the employer is
important. Try to add your value to the employer
while you introduce yourself. Uniquely craft your
message and tell them how you are an asset for the
organization.
Whether it’s through some serious online digging or
through informational interviews, find out what pain
points the company is trying to recover from and
point out directly how you can address them in your
application materials.
7. KEEP YOUR CONVERSATION
GOING
Networking is not a one day thing, keep the
conversation going. Knowing what is going on is so
important in order to know what you need to be doing
next. Who knows? Maybe your application actually
didn’t go through. Maybe they need a reference from
you and keep forgetting to ask. Information is
empowering. Follow up with a short, polite email.
