• What is Fundamental Analysis?
• What is needed to do FA?
• Speculator vs Trader vs Investor
• Investible Grade companies
• Annual report
• P&L statement
• Balance sheet
• Cash flow statement
What is Fundamental Analysis?
• Fundamental Analysis is the technique that
gives you the conviction to invest for a long
term by helping you identify the attributes of
wealth creating companies
What it takes to be a Fundamental
Analyst?
To become a fundamental analyst you will need
few basic skills:
• Understanding the basic financial statements
• Understand businesses with respect to the
industry in which it operates
How Technical Analysis is different
from FA?
• Technical Analysis (TA) helps you garner quick
short term returns.
• It helps you time the market for a better entry
and exit
• Both TA & FA must coexist in your market
strategy
The Core & Satellite Strategy
•This corpus can be split into two
unequal portions, for example the
split can be 60 – 40.
• The 60% of capital can be
invested for a long term period in
fundamentally strong companies.
• This 60% of the investment
makes up the core of the
portfolio. 40% is satellite.
What are the tools required for FA?
• Annual report of the company
• Industry related data
• Access to the news
• MS excel
Speculator vs Trader vs Investor
Speculator
• Betting on blind faith, without a rational
reasoning backing ones decision is
speculation.
• E.g.: Venkitech
Trader
• Trader- He is clearly not speculating on what
RBI/any body is likely to do as it does not
matter to him.
• His view is simple – volatility is high; hence the
premiums are attractive for an options seller.
• E.g. Tesla
Investor
• His idea is to hold on to his positions for a long
period of time and not get swayed by short
term market movements.
• In fact he is even prepared to buy more of his
portfolio stocks in case the market overreacts.
• E.g. : Tata Motors
Terminologies
• Compounding effect
• CAGR
• Investible grade companies
Compounding effect
• The longer you stay invested,
the harder the money works for you.
• For example ,consider you invest Rs.100 which is
expected to grow at 20% year on year
• At the end of the first year the money is expected to
grow to Rs.120
• You decide not withdraw Rs.20 profit; instead you
decide to reinvest the money for the 2nd year
• At the end of 2nd year, Rs.120 grows to Rs.144. At the
end of 3rd year Rs.144 grows to Rs.173. So on and so
forth.
What is CAGR?
• Compounded Annual Growth Rate
• 20% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR)
- doubling time is 3.5 years
• Inversely proportional
When can we say that a company is
“Investible Grade”?
• An investible grade company has a few
distinguishable characteristics. These

Where can I get info about a
company?
• For an investor, the annual report must be the
default option to seek information about a
company.
What does the Annual Report contain?
๏ Financial Highlights
๏ The Management Statement (every word is important -
the qualitative aspect)
๏ Management Discussion & Analysis - discusses the
threats and opportunities in the industry
๏ 10 year Financial highlights
๏ Corporate Information
๏ Director’s Report
๏ Report on Corporate governance
๏ Financial Section
๏ Notice
The three financial statements
There are three financial statements that the
company will present namely:
• The Profit and Loss statement
• The Balance Sheet
• The Cash flow statement
What is standalone financial
statement?
• Standalone Financial statements represent the
standalone numbers/ financials of the
company itself and do not include the
financials of its subsidiaries.
Reading a Financial statement
Reading a Financial statement
• When the company reports its financial
statements, they usually report the full
statement in the beginning and then follow it
up with a detailed explanation.
Reading a Financial statement
• Each particular in the financial statement is
referred to as the line item.
• If you notice, there is a note number
associated with share capital.
• These are called the ‘Schedules’ related to the
financial statement.
Reading a Financial statement
To be a fundamental analyst, one just needs to be the
user and not the maker of the financial statements.
Profit and Loss Statement
The P&L statement reports information on:
1. The revenue of the company for the given
period (yearly or quarterly)
2. The expenses incurred to generate the
revenues
3. Tax and depreciation
4. The earnings per share number
P&L Statement
How to Read?
•Top line of the company means revenue
•The particulars show all the main
headings of the statement.
•Any associated note to the particulars is
present in the note section (also called the
schedule).
•An associated number is assigned to the
note (Note Number)
•Net profit after tax - it is called as the
bottom line of the P&L statement
Terminologies
What is Net sales?
The revenue adjusted after the excise duty is
the net sales of the company
What is Total operating revenue?
The revenue from Sale of products + Sale of
services + Other operating revenues
Terminologies
• Inventories are goods at various stages of
production and hence have not been sold.
Terminologies
• What is change in inventory ?
– Change in inventory of finished goods refers to the
costs of manufacturing incurred by the company
in the past ,but the goods manufactured in the
past were sold in the present/current financial
year.
– E.g. Car manufactured last year is sold in today’s
price
Tangible vs Intangible asset
• A tangible asset is one which has a physical form
and provides an economic value to the company
– Ex: Buildings
An intangible asset is something that does not have a
physical form but still provides an economic value to
the company such as brand value, trademarks,
copyrights, patents, franchises ,customer lists
Terminologies
• Amortization - The depreciation equivalent for
non tangible assets is called amortization.
• EPS - The earnings per share (EPS) is a very
sacred number that indicates how much the
company is earning per face value of the
ordinary share.
P&L statement vs Balance sheet
• The P&L statement gives us information
pertaining to the profitability of the company
• The balance sheet gives us information
pertaining to the assets, liabilities, and
shareholder's equity.
• P&L talks about how the company performed in a
particular financial year;
• Balance sheet on the other hand discusses how
the company has evolved financially over the
years.
Are shares a liability?
• Liability in simple words is the loan that the
company has taken and it is therefore
obligated to repay back.
• Hence from the company’s perspective the
shareholders’ funds are an obligation payable
to shareholders.
• Hence this is shown on the liabilities side of
the balance sheet.
Current vs Non current liability
• Non-current liabilities are generally settled
after 12 months after the reporting period
• Total Liability = Shareholders’ Funds + Non
Current Liabilities + Current Liabilities
Reserves vs Surplus
• Reserves are usually money earmarked by the
company for specific purposes. Surplus is
where all the profits of the company reside.
• E.g: 15k extra in hand;
– 10k for buying bike : Reserve
– 5k remaining in savings account : Surplus
What is Capital work in progress?
• CWIP(Capital wok in progress) includes
building under construction, machinery under
assembly, etc at the time of preparing the
balance sheet.
• CWIP is the work that is not yet complete but
where a capital expenditure has already been
incurred.
Terminologies
• When the company acquires an asset it is
called the ‘Gross Block’.
• Current assets can be easily converted into
cash
• Equity = Assets – Liabilities.
A debtless company is a good
company?
• Why there is no debt?
– Is it because the banks are refusing to lend to the
company?
– or is it because the company is not taking
initiatives to expand their business operations
• Total Liability = Shareholders’ Funds + Non
Current Liabilities + Current Liabilities
“BalanceD” sheet
• The sum of all assets should equal the sum of
all liabilities.
• Only then the Balance sheet is said to have
balanced.
Cash flow of the company
• Cash Flow of the company = Net cash flow
from operating activities + Net Cash flow from
investing activities + Net cash flow from
financing activities
• Healthy investing activities foretell the
investor that the company is serious about its
business expansion
Understanding Cash flow
• Whenever the liabilities of the company
increases the cash balance also increases and
vice versa
Cash flow statement
Pro tip
• Ignore the daily short term noise and
concentrate on underlying business
performance!

How to do Fundamental Analysis in Stock market - 1

  • 2. Contents • What is Fundamental Analysis? • What is needed to do FA? • Speculator vs Trader vs Investor • Investible Grade companies • Annual report • P&L statement • Balance sheet • Cash flow statement
  • 3. What is Fundamental Analysis? • Fundamental Analysis is the technique that gives you the conviction to invest for a long term by helping you identify the attributes of wealth creating companies
  • 4. What it takes to be a Fundamental Analyst? To become a fundamental analyst you will need few basic skills: • Understanding the basic financial statements • Understand businesses with respect to the industry in which it operates
  • 5. How Technical Analysis is different from FA? • Technical Analysis (TA) helps you garner quick short term returns. • It helps you time the market for a better entry and exit • Both TA & FA must coexist in your market strategy
  • 6. The Core & Satellite Strategy •This corpus can be split into two unequal portions, for example the split can be 60 – 40. • The 60% of capital can be invested for a long term period in fundamentally strong companies. • This 60% of the investment makes up the core of the portfolio. 40% is satellite.
  • 7. What are the tools required for FA? • Annual report of the company • Industry related data • Access to the news • MS excel
  • 8. Speculator vs Trader vs Investor
  • 9. Speculator • Betting on blind faith, without a rational reasoning backing ones decision is speculation. • E.g.: Venkitech
  • 10. Trader • Trader- He is clearly not speculating on what RBI/any body is likely to do as it does not matter to him. • His view is simple – volatility is high; hence the premiums are attractive for an options seller. • E.g. Tesla
  • 11. Investor • His idea is to hold on to his positions for a long period of time and not get swayed by short term market movements. • In fact he is even prepared to buy more of his portfolio stocks in case the market overreacts. • E.g. : Tata Motors
  • 12. Terminologies • Compounding effect • CAGR • Investible grade companies
  • 13. Compounding effect • The longer you stay invested, the harder the money works for you. • For example ,consider you invest Rs.100 which is expected to grow at 20% year on year • At the end of the first year the money is expected to grow to Rs.120 • You decide not withdraw Rs.20 profit; instead you decide to reinvest the money for the 2nd year • At the end of 2nd year, Rs.120 grows to Rs.144. At the end of 3rd year Rs.144 grows to Rs.173. So on and so forth.
  • 14. What is CAGR? • Compounded Annual Growth Rate • 20% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) - doubling time is 3.5 years • Inversely proportional
  • 15. When can we say that a company is “Investible Grade”? • An investible grade company has a few distinguishable characteristics. These characteristics can be classified under two heads namely the: – Qualitative aspect – Quantitative aspects

  • 22. Where can I get info about a company? • For an investor, the annual report must be the default option to seek information about a company.
  • 23. What does the Annual Report contain? ๏ Financial Highlights ๏ The Management Statement (every word is important - the qualitative aspect) ๏ Management Discussion & Analysis - discusses the threats and opportunities in the industry ๏ 10 year Financial highlights ๏ Corporate Information ๏ Director’s Report ๏ Report on Corporate governance ๏ Financial Section ๏ Notice
  • 24. The three financial statements There are three financial statements that the company will present namely: • The Profit and Loss statement • The Balance Sheet • The Cash flow statement
  • 25. What is standalone financial statement? • Standalone Financial statements represent the standalone numbers/ financials of the company itself and do not include the financials of its subsidiaries.
  • 26. Reading a Financial statement
  • 27. Reading a Financial statement • When the company reports its financial statements, they usually report the full statement in the beginning and then follow it up with a detailed explanation.
  • 28. Reading a Financial statement • Each particular in the financial statement is referred to as the line item. • If you notice, there is a note number associated with share capital. • These are called the ‘Schedules’ related to the financial statement.
  • 29. Reading a Financial statement
  • 30. To be a fundamental analyst, one just needs to be the user and not the maker of the financial statements.
  • 31.
  • 32. Profit and Loss Statement The P&L statement reports information on: 1. The revenue of the company for the given period (yearly or quarterly) 2. The expenses incurred to generate the revenues 3. Tax and depreciation 4. The earnings per share number
  • 33. P&L Statement How to Read? •Top line of the company means revenue •The particulars show all the main headings of the statement. •Any associated note to the particulars is present in the note section (also called the schedule). •An associated number is assigned to the note (Note Number) •Net profit after tax - it is called as the bottom line of the P&L statement
  • 34. Terminologies What is Net sales? The revenue adjusted after the excise duty is the net sales of the company What is Total operating revenue? The revenue from Sale of products + Sale of services + Other operating revenues
  • 35. Terminologies • Inventories are goods at various stages of production and hence have not been sold.
  • 36. Terminologies • What is change in inventory ? – Change in inventory of finished goods refers to the costs of manufacturing incurred by the company in the past ,but the goods manufactured in the past were sold in the present/current financial year. – E.g. Car manufactured last year is sold in today’s price
  • 37. Tangible vs Intangible asset • A tangible asset is one which has a physical form and provides an economic value to the company – Ex: Buildings An intangible asset is something that does not have a physical form but still provides an economic value to the company such as brand value, trademarks, copyrights, patents, franchises ,customer lists
  • 38. Terminologies • Amortization - The depreciation equivalent for non tangible assets is called amortization. • EPS - The earnings per share (EPS) is a very sacred number that indicates how much the company is earning per face value of the ordinary share.
  • 39. P&L statement vs Balance sheet • The P&L statement gives us information pertaining to the profitability of the company • The balance sheet gives us information pertaining to the assets, liabilities, and shareholder's equity. • P&L talks about how the company performed in a particular financial year; • Balance sheet on the other hand discusses how the company has evolved financially over the years.
  • 40. Are shares a liability? • Liability in simple words is the loan that the company has taken and it is therefore obligated to repay back. • Hence from the company’s perspective the shareholders’ funds are an obligation payable to shareholders. • Hence this is shown on the liabilities side of the balance sheet.
  • 41. Current vs Non current liability • Non-current liabilities are generally settled after 12 months after the reporting period • Total Liability = Shareholders’ Funds + Non Current Liabilities + Current Liabilities
  • 42. Reserves vs Surplus • Reserves are usually money earmarked by the company for specific purposes. Surplus is where all the profits of the company reside. • E.g: 15k extra in hand; – 10k for buying bike : Reserve – 5k remaining in savings account : Surplus
  • 43. What is Capital work in progress? • CWIP(Capital wok in progress) includes building under construction, machinery under assembly, etc at the time of preparing the balance sheet. • CWIP is the work that is not yet complete but where a capital expenditure has already been incurred.
  • 44. Terminologies • When the company acquires an asset it is called the ‘Gross Block’. • Current assets can be easily converted into cash • Equity = Assets – Liabilities.
  • 45. A debtless company is a good company? • Why there is no debt? – Is it because the banks are refusing to lend to the company? – or is it because the company is not taking initiatives to expand their business operations
  • 46. • Total Liability = Shareholders’ Funds + Non Current Liabilities + Current Liabilities
  • 47.
  • 48. “BalanceD” sheet • The sum of all assets should equal the sum of all liabilities. • Only then the Balance sheet is said to have balanced.
  • 49. Cash flow of the company • Cash Flow of the company = Net cash flow from operating activities + Net Cash flow from investing activities + Net cash flow from financing activities • Healthy investing activities foretell the investor that the company is serious about its business expansion
  • 51.
  • 52. • Whenever the liabilities of the company increases the cash balance also increases and vice versa
  • 54. Pro tip • Ignore the daily short term noise and concentrate on underlying business performance!
