What Is Lubrication & Fluid Handling?
What Is Lubricant?
Lubricants are used to control or reduce the friction and wear of the components in contact with
parts that are in relative motion. Lubricants can be of different types, based on the need and
specification. These can be used to eliminate heat and wear debris, supply additives, transmit
power, protect and seal. Lubricants can also come in various states of matter like liquid (oil, water),
solid (graphite, graphene, molybdenum disulphide), gas (air) and even semisolid (grease) forms.
Liquid lubricants can be classified based on oil to synthetic or semi-synthetic, mineral or
biodegradable oils. Most lubricants have additives (5%-30%) to enhance the performance.
What Is Fluid Handling?
Fluid handling are high velocity fluids which can be liquids or gases. The word high velocity means
erosion, corrosion and wear that can happen at high impart points in parts like pump impellers,
valve seats, stems, bends and elbows in pipework system. If any of these components malfunction,
it will immediately affect the performance and can cause hefty repair costs.
Good quality fluid handling and lubricants are cost-effective and long-wearing that work to reduce
wear and corrosion ad optimize the system components to increase performance and life of the
components. This also helps in minimizing overall operating and maintenance cost.
Types Of Lubrication & Fluid Handling
Following are the different types of auto lubricants and fluid handling available in the market:
Types of Lubricants
Three basic types of lubricants are Boundary, Mixed and Full Film. These work in different ways
to protect and preserve the different components they are associated with.
1. Full Film Lubrication – This type of lubrication can be broken down into two forms:
Hydrodynamic and Elastohydrodynamic. Hydrodynamic lubrication occurs between two
surfaces that are in motion and are separated by the fluid or a film. Elastohydrodynamic
lubrication happens when the surfaces are in rotatory motion. The film lay is much thinner than
that of hydrodynamic film and handles much more pressure and force. The film plastically
deforms the rolling surface for lubrication, hence getting its name. Even when the surface is
smooth, it can still have impurities that can be as small as microscopic levels. For the full film
lubrication to work, the thickness of the lubricant spreading over the surface must be more than
the length of the impurities. These impurities are known by a special name called Asperities.
2. Boundary Lubrication – This lubricant is found in shock-loading condition, where there are
frequent stops and starts. Sometimes this lubricant also has extreme-pressure (EP) or anti-
wear (AW) additives to protect the component surface when full films can’t work due to high
speed and load factors. These additives get attached to the metal surface and form a protective
layer over it. Boundary lubricant work in the condition where two moving surfaces and in
contact and the EP or AW layer is the only them protecting the surface. If the project is not
ideal, it will cause extreme friction and heat, thus, damaging the components.
3. Mixed Lubrication – This lubricant is a mixture of both above mentioned lubricants. While a
lubricant can form a protective layer between components, the asperities can still come in
contact with each other and cause damage. This is where mixed lubrication comes into play.
Now that you have understood the difference between different types of lubricants, you’ll be able
to understand better about the importance of lubrication among various components of a vehicle.
To simply explain, lubrication is a process of separating and protecting two relatively moving
surfaces, to reduce heat, friction and damage. Thus, regular checks and oil changes are the
primary steps of any car service.
How Do Lubrication & Fluid Handling Work?
This basic difference between solids and liquids is rigidity and fluidity. While solids are resistant to
change in shape, liquids take the shape of the object they are poured into. Thus, when you put oil
between gears, it takes the shape and spreads evenly and the surface, cushioning microscopic
bumps and reducing the friction during motion.
Without the lubricants, the gear system will heat up due to increased friction and will start to wear
on microscopic levels as one surface drags onto other. Applying lubricants will smoothen and
cushion the two surfaces as it can easily flow and change shape. Thus, the layer will slide freely,
helping to reduce motion friction.
Purpose Of Lubrication & Fluid Handling
Lubrication aims at reducing friction between two relatively moving components. When two
surfaces come in contact with one another, a fluid must be injected to separate them. Thus,
lubricants serve the following purpose in a vehicle:
• Reduce Friction (Rubbing Or Deformation)
• Prevent Pieces From Wear
• Absorb/Reduce Shocks
• Protect From Corrosion
• Isolate Components From Contamination
• Clean/Get Rid Of Contaminants
Frequent Problems With Lubrication & Fluid Handling
Following are the problems associated with lubricants and fluid handling:
1. Over Lubrication – Too much of everything is bad. Like lack of grease can cause component
to fail, similarly too much grease can jam the asset, leading to additional maintenance and
hours of downtime. Over-greasing can also lead to seal failure. It can also harm bearings when
it dries and brakes off.
2. Under Lubrication – This problem is very easy to sought. If the lubricant is less, increased
heat and sound from the component will be followed by complete asset failure.
3. Using Wrong Lubricant – Using wrong lubricant can lead to severe damage and also void
asset warranty. Manufacturers provide specific information regarding which lubricant has to be
used and these guidelines must be taken seriously. Viscosity of the lubricant is the most
important property. Using a lubricant with wrong viscosity will lead to complete failure. Wrong
lubricant can even add to increased friction and heating of the components. Thus, follow proper
guidelines.
4. Mixing Lubricants – Mixing lubricants will change the properties like viscosity, density,
volume, and functionality of the two lubricants forged to make the third new one. This can
hamper the vehicle performance immensely. For example, mixing a synthetic and mineral-
based lubricant can cause havoc. Mixing also hampers nearly seals by increasing the risk of
expanding or shrinking.
5. Contamination – The main reason for premature bearing failure is a contaminated lubricant.
Not only it harms machinery, but can also be very expensive to remove and clean properly. To
prevent this from happening, one must first understand how the lubricant can get contaminated
and what are the steps to avoid it, to prevent early failure. The primary source of contamination
is the ambient air, dust, dirt, debris and other foreign materials that get stuck on the machinery
in operation. Sometimes, a simple visual inspection is not enough to detect the contamination.
For this, an ultrasound tool can be used to detect any impurities in the bearing system, thus
notifying the mechanic in advance about the potential failure. Thus, an improved lubrication
system accompanied by accurate data can help safeguard important components from failure
and replace the lubricant in time. Thus, regular checks can ensure that the vehicle assets are
functioning properly and will help to resolve the issue at source and allow quick cost
calculations for maximum management.

  • 1. What Is Lubrication & Fluid Handling? What Is Lubricant? Lubricants are used to control or reduce the friction and wear of the components in contact with parts that are in relative motion. Lubricants can be of different types, based on the need and specification. These can be used to eliminate heat and wear debris, supply additives, transmit power, protect and seal. Lubricants can also come in various states of matter like liquid (oil, water), solid (graphite, graphene, molybdenum disulphide), gas (air) and even semisolid (grease) forms. Liquid lubricants can be classified based on oil to synthetic or semi-synthetic, mineral or biodegradable oils. Most lubricants have additives (5%-30%) to enhance the performance. What Is Fluid Handling? Fluid handling are high velocity fluids which can be liquids or gases. The word high velocity means erosion, corrosion and wear that can happen at high impart points in parts like pump impellers, valve seats, stems, bends and elbows in pipework system. If any of these components malfunction, it will immediately affect the performance and can cause hefty repair costs. Full Film Lubrication – This type of lubrication can be broken down into two forms: Hydrodynamic and Elastohydrodynamic. Hydrodynamic lubrication occurs between two

The film lay is much thinner than that of hydrodynamic film and handles much more pressure and force. The film plastically deforms the rolling surface for lubrication, hence getting its name. Even when the surface is smooth, it can still have impurities that can be as small as microscopic levels. For the full film lubrication to work, the thickness of the lubricant spreading over the surface must be more than the length of the impurities. These impurities are known by a special name called Asperities. 2. Boundary Lubrication – This lubricant is found in shock-loading condition, where there are frequent stops and starts. Sometimes this lubricant also has extreme-pressure (EP) or anti- wear (AW) additives to protect the component surface when full films can’t work due to high speed and load factors. These additives get attached to the metal surface and form a protective layer over it. Boundary lubricant work in the condition where two moving surfaces and in contact and the EP or AW layer is the only them protecting the surface. If the project is not ideal, it will cause extreme friction and heat, thus, damaging the components. 3. Mixed Lubrication – This lubricant is a mixture of both above mentioned lubricants. While a lubricant can form a protective layer between components, the asperities can still come in contact with each other and cause damage. This is where mixed lubrication comes into play. Now that you have understood the difference between different types of lubricants, you’ll be able to understand better about the importance of lubrication among various components of a vehicle. To simply explain, lubrication is a process of separating and protecting two relatively moving surfaces, to reduce heat, friction and damage. Thus, regular checks and oil changes are the primary steps of any car service. How Do Lubrication & Fluid Handling Work? This basic difference between solids and liquids is rigidity and fluidity. While solids are resistant to change in shape, liquids take the shape of the object they are poured into. Thus, when you put oil between gears, it takes the shape and spreads evenly and the surface, cushioning microscopic bumps and reducing the friction during motion. Without the lubricants, the gear system will heat up due to increased friction and will start to wear on microscopic levels as one surface drags onto other. Applying lubricants will smoothen and cushion the two surfaces as it can easily flow and change shape. Thus, the layer will slide freely, helping to reduce motion friction. It can also harm bearings when it dries and brakes off. 2. Under Lubrication – This problem is very easy to sought.
