Editor's Notes
The University of Rzeszow was established on the first of September 2001 through the merger of the Pedagogical University of Rzeszow, the Maria Curie Skłodowska University of Lublin, Rzeszów branch, and the Economics Faculty of the Hugo Kołłątaj Agricultural Academy of Cracow, Rzeszów branch. It is young, open and strong on its variety. It is located in Rzeszów – the capital of the Podkarpackie Province in the south east of Poland.
Rzeszów has the population of 185 thousand inhabitants. It takes pride in its over 600-year history. The strategy of its dynamic development follows the idea of building the Capital of Innovation. It is the centre for many IT companies including the largest Polish software company ASSECO. Rzeszów is also the heart of the region known as the Aviation Valley, which comprises aviation sector companies.
Rzeszów is an important academic centre in southeastern Poland. In schools of higher education located in the city there are over 60,000 students. According to Eurostat, Rzeszów has the highest number of students per 1,000 inhabitants.
There are 11 faculties and 1 non-faculty branch institute (with faculty rights) offering education in 49 fields of study. Rzeszów University has the right to confer an Associate Professor degree within the field of agronomy, linguistics, archeology and history as well as a PhD degree in agronomy, biology, economics, literary studies and linguistics, physics, health sciences, archeology, philosophy, history and sociology. The academic and teaching potential of the university comprises 1,300 academic teachers including more than 300 professors.
The University of Rzeszów is the winner of many prestigious awards and distinctions including the Polish Innovation Award 2014 awarded during the Second Congress of Polish Entrepreneurship for creating the research and didactic Zalesie campus. It is also the award winner in the Quality International pro-quality contest under the auspices of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development. The award emphasizes the scientific and didactic achievements of the Centre of Microelectronics and Nanotechnology within the field of the quality of education and the realization of research projects. The university was also awarded the gold medal at the International Fair in Nuremberg for the invention aimed at purification of soil contaminated with pesticides - “fluidal reactor”.
The biggest group creating the academic environment of Rzeszów University are the students. Apart from acquiring knowledge during the 3-cycle studies, they are involved in the activities of 86 scientific circles. They also realize their artistic and sports passions, edit their own magazine and run an academic radio.
The asset of the university is highly developed international cooperation. The university cooperates with over 200 partner universities from all over the world. The students and academic staff take part in many internships, conferences and research camps abroad. The Erasmus+ programme enables the students to do partial studies in 67 European universities. Due to its geographical location the University of Rzeszów realizes unique assignments especially in cooperation with Ukrainian and Slovakian universities.
The main objective of the university is higher school education realized by 12 basic organizational units.
At the Faculty of Biology and Agriculture there are 6 fields of study: landscape architecture, biology, renewable energy sources and waste management, environment protection, agriculture, and food technology and nutrition.
The faculty has the right to confer a PhD degree in such disciplines as biology and agronomy and an Associate Professor degree in the field of agronomy.

Students can choose from a number of interesting specializations such as fitness instructor, physical education in the uniformed services or business tourism. Students often combine their education with performing sports professionally achieving successes in both home and European arenas.
The students of this faculty have the opportunity to study in the English language due to the introduction of a novelty programme “Europejczyk” (European).
BRANCH CAMPUS OF APPLIED BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BASIC SCIENCES offers studies in 10 disciplines
A new specialization at the Institute of Biotechnology is medical biotechnology conducted in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine.
The Institute of Biotechnology is the best scientific research unit in the Podkarpacie region in the category of life sciences (A+ science category).
The University of Rzeszów realizes over 30 projects, whose aim is strengthening and development of didactic potential of the university as well as increasing the number of graduates in disciplines of the greatest importance to the economy based on knowledge. As a result numerous science and research centres have been created at the university.
At present there are 11 modern science and research centres at the university conducting different kinds of research. They are without doubt the flagship of the region. For instance, in university laboratories the environment is being monitored in search of alternative energy sources including more efficient solar batteries or new materials (nanocomposites for protective covering) which can be used for example in surgical manipulators are being searched for.
The offer of the Centre for Innovative Technologies is aimed at public and business entities as well as representatives of science and research units of various industries including highly developed aviation industry as well as electromechanical, car and agri-food industries. The research done at the centre includes: corrosion research, metallography, micro- and nanohardness research, temperature analysis and thermography, tribological research, ultrasonographic defectoscopy, magnetic memory of metal, X-ray analysis of strains, research of errors in shape and microstructure of geometrical surface of machine parts, endurance tests, computed tomography, production of elements using 3D printing technologies (both from polymer and metal materials), vibration research, etc.
The objective of Interdisciplinary Centre for Computational Modelling is cooperation with business including Polish IT and technological companies. The ICMM computer equipment comprises 120 high-tech PC workstations, steering sets of technological processes based on advanced microprocessor technology, iris scanning sets for identification, dactyloscopic identification sets, and sets for automatic tracking of the human figure in the video stream.
The University of Rzeszów is a creator of interdisciplinary cognitive and practical scientific thought following academic values and needs of modern and innovative economy. It provides modern research and didactic base especially for biological-agricultural and medical sciences. The university has the infrastructure suitable for newly created disciplines and specializations such as medicine, microelectronics, nanotechnology and materials for aviation as well as medical bioengineering, bioinformatics, analytical biotechnology and biomaterials.
