Do’s
• Identify the relief the Union is seeking.
• Fully inform your own superior of Grievance
matters.
• Hold discussions privately.

Don’t’s
• Discuss the case with the Union Steward alone;
the Grievant should definitely be there.
• Mage agreements with individuals that are
inconsistent with the labor arrangements.

• Command the respect of the Union
Representatives.

• Hold back the remedy if the company is wrong.

• Examine the Grievant’s personal record.

• Relinquish your authority to the Union.

• Treat the Union Representative as your equal.

• Apply the Grievance remedy to an improper
Grievance.

• Get the Union to identify specific contractual
provisions allegedly violated.

• Admit the binding effect of a past practice.

• Argue Grievance issues off the work premises.

• Enforce the contractual time limits.
When Grievances arise, an effective Management process can resolve most disputes between labor

PC in 2001. That is when we realized there was a strong need for a new computer company, one that focused
on International and Local unions and the organizations affiliated with them. We found a deep need for a
company that would deal fairly with labor, offering the kind of relationship that we knew was possible: a
mutually beneficial one that would last decades. We also wanted to make our company fully unionized, from
top to bottom. We have achieved all of that and more.
