CEFPODOXIME
BRIEF
OVERVIEW

2. Ceftibuten (as dihydrate) 400 mg capsule & 90 mg/5ml Susp.
 FDA approved oral 3rd generation Cephalosporin for used in both adults & children.
 It is active against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
 Ceftibuten is also proven stable against plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases, including extended-
spectrum beta-lactamases (Ref:- Owens RC Jr, et al. Pharmacotherapy. Volume 17, Issue 4 July-
August 1997 Pages 707–720).
 Convenient once daily dosage regimen with better efficacy & adverse effects profile compare to
other oral 2nd & 3rd generation Cephalosporins.
 Ceftibuten was proven safe, well tolerated and effective in over 3000 patient’s clinical trial.
 Pregnancy category B with studies supporting its usage in pregnant women to treat various
infections.
 Convenient switch therapy from IV to oral especially in case of Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime,
Cefoperazone/Sulbactam etc.
 Better efficacy , safety, tolerability and adverse effects profile compare to amoxicillin/clavulanic
acid and clarithromycin.
 Less competition.

3. Dosage:
 400 mg once daily.
 For Infants and children 6 months up to 12 years of age—Dose
is based on body weight and must be determined by your
doctor. The dose is usually 9 mg per kg of body weight per day
taken for 10 days. Infants up to 6 months of age—Use and dose
must be determined by your doctor.
 Maximum Dosage: 400 mg.

4. Indications:
Ceftibuten is indicated in following infections:
 Upper and lower respiratory tract infection including
Pneumonia
 AECB
 Enteritis and gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella, Shigella or
E. coli.
 Uncomplicated & Complicated UTIs
 Prophylaxis in Cholecystectomy and/or Biliary tract surgery
 Off-Label:- Typhoid Fever

5. Pakistan Status:
 Registered but not launched properly in
market. Wilshire (Xigris).

6. Cefpodoxime Proxetil 100 mg, 200 mg tablet & 40 mg/5ml Susp.
 FDA approved oral 3rd generation Cephalosporin for used in both adults & children.
 It is active against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
 Cefpodoxime has been found to be a well-tolerated and superior alternative to cefixime
synergistically documenting the extended spectrum of activity.
 Cost effective compare to Ceftibuten.
 BID dosage regimen.
 According to published vivo data. clinical and bacteriological results obtained with cefpodoxime
proxetil were comparable with those obtained with ceftriaxone. Meaning cefpodoxime oral efficacy
is similar to Ceftriaxone.
 It also finds use as oral continuation therapy when intravenous cephalosporins (such as ceftriaxone)
are no longer necessary for continued treatment..
 Superior compare to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid & clarithromycin.
 Less competition.

7. Indications:
Cefpodoxime Proxetil is indicated in following infections:
 Acute Bronchitis & AECB
 AECB
 Acute Community-Acquired Pneumonia.
 Acute Maxillary Sinusitis
 UTIs
 Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis
 Skin infections
 Gonorrhea
 Off-Label:- Typhoid Fever caused by multidrug-resistant Salmonella serotype Typhi particularly in
Children.

8. Dosage:
 100 mg to 200 mg every 12 hour
depending upon infection.
 Maximum Dosage: 800 mg

9. Pakistan Status:
 Available but marketed by very few
companies such as Sami, Getz and
Sanofi Aventis.
