Assessing the Impacts of Improved Cookstoves on Community Health: A Pilot Study Donee Alexander, 2009 Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering Special Thanks To: William Forge Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation MacArthur Foundation Rockefeller Foundation Marguerite Casey Foundation Department of Global Health School of Public Health and Community Medicine Jesusa Illanes The Communities The villages of Yanayo Chico, Cueva Pata, Tuquiza, and Llutara lie high in the Andean region of Bolivia. The communities range in size from 8 households (approximately 30 people) to 45 households (approximately 160 people). Women cook on traditional cookstoves in poorly ventilated kitchens. As part of an Engineers Without Borders project, we designed and implemented improved wood cookstoves with chimneys in the communities of Yanayo Chico and Cueva Pata in July 2008. In August 2009, Tuquiza and Lluatara are scheduled to receive the improved cookstoves. ,[object Object],[object Object],Problem Setting Northern Potosi, Bolivia Objectives Research suggests that improved biomass cookstoves within ventilation systems can significantly reduce exposure to indoor air pollution, and the associated health effect, but currently there are no direct methods to measure chronic woodsmooke exposure. Indentifying a method to detect chronic exposure would facilitate early intervention and improved health care. Bolivia Stove Intervention Methods Methoxyphenol Testing: All willing cooks and non-cooks in each of the four communities have been asked to provide first morning void samples. In two communities (Yanayo Chico and Cueva Pata) where intervention has occurred, one sampling event pre-intervention and two sampling events post-intervention have been completed. In the remaining two communities (Tuquiza and Llutara) where intervention has not yet taken place, three sampling events have been completed. Urine analysis will start in February 2009. Longitudinal Health Evaluations: Community members are also participating in epidemiological health evaluations with questions pertinent to lung function. These are conducted pre and post intervention. Micro DL portable spirometers are used to measure the rate at which the lung changes volume during forced breathing operations. Pre-stove intervention spirometry measurements have been completed on all willing participants in the communities of Yanayo Chico and Cueva Pata.
