Ugochukwu Obi was once a dull student who struggled in secondary school, but he found focus and determination. He joined clubs, improved his grades, and received training in acting. Although he faced challenges getting admitted to university due to corruption, his father supported him spiritually. Obi was admitted to and graduated from a private university in exactly four years. He encourages others to find focus and work hard, as he has since received awards and is pursuing publishing and sponsorship opportunities with his talents.

THE NEED TO BE FOCUS AND STUDY HARD
1. THE NEED TO BE FOCUS AND STUDY
HARD.
(A TRUE LIFE STORY OF CORPER OBI).
My name is Ugochukwu Obi, I am a corper presently serving in Oyo
state, in one of the most distinguished Schools in Apata area, CLOFAM Group of
Schools.
If somebody had said that one day I would be a graduate, wearing the
khaki green and white vest, I would say it’s a lie.
During my secondary school days, I used to be a dull student, people
made mockery of me, I even came out second to last position in my class and it
hurts me so much. I never stopped school, I had a focus, to be a university
graduate, to be a writer, an actor and so on, even though I was struggling with
the last position.
In my senior class, I separated myself from the obscurity that had made
me not to discover my potentials, my talent, my target and my focus. I began to
study, I even joined school clubs like: Young Lawyers and Leaders Club (YLLC)
and Drama and Debate Club (DDS) respectively. Fortunately for me, I was
appointed the school Chief Judge, and in the other club (DDS), I was elected as
the president until I left secondary school.
I did not stop there, I wrote my WAEC and NECO ones without a record
of failure. I also went for three months training in Acting at Pencil Film and
Television Institute (PEFTI) where I came out with an UPPER CREDIT in Acting. I
wrote my JAMB, but you know the Nigeria school system, you must be
2. connected or give bribe before you are admitted into any tertiary institution
even when you have made the best score.
My dad being a disciplined man, prefer giving the bribe to God than man.
I was stupefied when he showed me the money inside the envelop worth
250,000 naira as seed to God and not to a lecturer or Vice-chancellor.
I left my fate to God, I made enquiry in one of the best private
universities, took the aptitude test and was admitted into Madonna University
Nigeria to study English and Literary Studies. I came out of school exactly four
years as stated in my admission letter.
Why am I saying this? I had a focus, even those who think they are the
most brilliant are either still in school, drop out or into one business of no
value. Only a focused man will get to his destination or achieve his or her goals.
As am talking to you now, I have received five awards in two years, written
works that are yet to be published, seeking for sponsors by the grace of God; I
can proudly say that I am multi-talented.
You can be whoever you want to be, “Greatness is bestowed on ordinary
people with extra-ordinary amount of determination.” The need to be focused
and study hard is now.
