2. 180 Degree Rule
During the production of my preliminary task, I learnt about the 180
degree rule. The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the
on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another
character within a scene. We used this in our short film as we
thought it would be a very affective way of introducing the
relationship of these two characters to the audience.
3. Match On Action
Match on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques
where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches
the first shot’s action. We decided to use this technique in our
opening sequence as it is a clever way of presenting an object to
the audience. We wanted to show audience the briefcase and
reveal who was presenting it at the same time, so with two shots
we were able to give to points of view of Luis opening the
briefcase.
4. Shot Reverse Shot
Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown
looking at another character and then the other character is shown
looking back at the first character. After experimenting with this
technique in my preliminary task, I found that it was very useful in
my opening film as the setting used was a very narrow long
alleyway. It also helped build the tension in the scenes as the close
ups of the characters were very unsettling.
5. Editing
The most important part of the preliminary task which I
learned from was the editing. This gave me the opportunity to
use Adobe Premiere and learn how to use it before the
actually film opening had to be made. This was useful as I
knew how to use all the tools and features before putting my
film opening together.
