3. Jazz Musician & Artist
• Born in the 1920s, Rivers was also an accomplished
jazz musician and poet who studied at the Juilliard
School of Music and became friends with Miles
Davis and Charlie Parker. Taking an extended
sojourn to Paris in the early 1950s, he became close
with Frank O’Hara and had his first sculptural
exhibition at New York’s Stable Gallery in 1954. He
subsequently carved out a distinct reputation at the
nexus between abstract expressionism and the
emerging pop art sensibility. Larry Rivers is well
known for his seminal influence on Andy Warhol.
His legacy continues to this day through a
foundation in his name.
