                  2 parts:
      Pronouncement of messiahship
              Train Apostles

Many people had acknowledged Jesus as the
promised Messiah. This infuriated the Jewish
                leadership.
Jesus turned toward Jerusalem
Jesus arrived at Jerusalem.
              donkey and a colt,
“the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee”
             placed palm branches
                hosanna shout:
He went directly to the temple, and according to
Mark, took note of what he saw and retired to
            Bethany for the night.
2nd day
Temple - drive out money changers,
which were sanctioned by the Jewish
  leadership. Righteous anger? Are
     their something's that Christ
 personally finds hateful? Did Christ
choose his miracles and actions or was
he always prompted by the father?
Jesus’ wrath in the temple raised the issue of
authority, and the priests were not about to let the
incident pass. As Jesus came to the temple the next
day, the priests challenged him: “By what authority
doest thou these things? and who gave thee this
authority?” (Matthew 21:23.) Jesus responded by
relating a series of parables that offended the
religious leaders of the Jews. The scribes and
Pharisees challenged him again; Jesus openly
denounced them and condemned them as hypocrites.

Work? No - later repented and did.
Work? Yes - but did not.
  Publicans and harlots better.
              Why?
Many of christ's parables start with The
      kingdom of heaven is like...

      How would you describe it?
Ch. 22
                 Parable
Marriage of the king's son - wedding feast
        Invitation - made light of.
     Those that were invited became
unworthy. Others took their place. Born
in the covenant, unfaithful, others will
             take your place.
V-14 many are called but few are chosen.
P & S combine to question Christ.
              P - lawful, tribute,render to Caesar.
S - resurrection, odd scenario about wives. V-23 ye do err.
P &S unhappy try another tactic
                Lawyer - greatest commandment
                                2?
Christ puts 1 question to them, which they answer wrong, making
                        them look foolish.
Realize that Christ is unschooled, as the rabbis have been. No
one has been able to match wits with the educated elite. Their
livelihood is in jeopardy, thus Christ's removal is the only option.
After this episode the questions cease, and the plan to abduct
becomes the focus of the P & S.

                     Hypocrites
                    V- 24, 33, 37
Christ seems to have a serious dislike for hypocrites.
“Harry Emerson Fosdick observed that there
are two kinds of hypocrisy: when we try to
appear better than we are, and when we let
ourselves appear worse than we are. We have
been speaking of the kind of hypocrisy where
people pretend to be more or better than they
are. T often, however, we see members of the
      oo
Church who in their hearts know and believe,
but through fear of public opinion fail to stand
up and be counted. This kind of hypocrisy is as
serious as the other” (in Conference Report,
              Oct. 1970, 52–53)
From this point on, Jesus did not teach the
              public, but only the Twelve.

Perceiving that Jesus had gained the upper hand in their
confrontations, the Jewish leaders consulted again how
they might bring about Jesus’ death. They would have to
move quickly before the Passover to avoid a riot, however,
since Jesus had become very popular with the Jewish
people. How to bring about an arrest without provoking
crowd reaction was the problem. An unexpected turn of
events that took place abetted their plot. One of Jesus’
own disciples offered to betray him.
Jesus well knew of the plot. The fourth day was
spent outside the city, perhaps at Bethany. The
record of the gospel writers is silent on the
           proceedings of this day.
Ch. 25
Jesus gives the parables of the ten virgins, the
talents, and the sheep and the goats. (New
      Testament, Matthew, Chapter 25)
10 virgins - moral of the story?
The Talents - moral of the story?

It wasn't until lately that I began to understand the parable of the ten virgins in a
different way. Now I understand better the pain that both sides must have felt. Now I
see that the parable is not one of five who are righteous and five who are wicked, but
about ten righteous people, five of whom believed they understood and could control
their circumstances. It wasn't just a matter of not being prepared, it was a matter of
feeling that someone else would solve their problems for them.
Sheep and Goats

        animals.
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty,
and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I
was in prison, and ye came unto me.
37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when
saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave
                        thee drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or
                 naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto
                           thee?
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I
say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the
least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (New
             Testament, Matthew, Chapter 25)
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me,
ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye
                            gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me
not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an
hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and
                       did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as
ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. (New
                   Testament, Matthew, Chapter 25)
1:39
  1. A poor, wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often crossed me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief
That I could never answer nay.
I had not pow’r to ask his name,
Whereto he went, or whence he came;
Yet there was something in his eye
That won my love; I knew not why.
2. Once, when my scanty meal was spread,
He entered; not a word he spake,
Just perishing for want of bread.
I gave him all; he blessed it, brake,
And ate, but gave me part again.
Mine was an angel’s portion then,
For while I fed with eager haste,
The crust was manna to my taste.
3. I spied him where a fountain burst
Clear from the rock; his strength was gone.
  The heedless water mocked his thirst;
He heard it, saw it hurrying on.
     I ran and raised the suff’rer up;
Thrice from the stream he drained my cup,
   Dipped and returned it running o’er;
I drank and never thirsted more.
4. ’Twas night; the floods were out; it blew
         A winter hurricane aloof.
I heard his voice abroad and flew
T bid him welcome to my roof.
       o
I warmed and clothed and cheered my guest
And laid him on my couch to rest,
Then made the earth my bed and seemed
In Eden’s garden while I dreamed.
5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death,
I found him by the highway side.
I roused his pulse, brought back his breath,
      Revived his spirit, and supplied
  Wine, oil, refreshment—he was healed.
I had myself a wound concealed,
But from that hour forgot the smart,
And peace bound up my broken heart.
6. In pris’n I saw him next, condemned
   T meet a traitor’s doom at morn.
    o
The tide of lying tongues I stemmed,
And honored him ’mid shame and scorn.
My friendship’s utmost zeal to try,
He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,
But my free spirit cried, “I will!”
7. Then in a moment to my view
  The stranger started from disguise.
    The tokens in his hands I knew;
The Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake, and my poor name he named,
“Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
  These deeds shall thy memorial be;
Fear not, thou didst them unto me.”
The 5th Day
Jesus had arranged to commemorate the
Passover meal in a home privately reserved for
him and the Twelve. Following the Passover meal,
Jesus introduced a new ordinance, the
sacrament, which presaged his atoning sacrifice.
He then prophesied of his death and indicated
who would betray him. Specifics, becomes real,
                plan of action.

Peter’s declaration of faith
33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.

                                     Peter’s crisis of faith

72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou
also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And
immediately the cock crew.
75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock
crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. - Not very Rock
like. However?
After some instructions, Jesus offered his great intercessory
prayer. Then, with the eleven (Judas had left), Jesus led them
outside the walls to a familiar spot—Gethsemane. Then taking
Peter, James, and John with him, he went further into the
Garden where he then left those three and went off by himself
to pray. (See Matthew 26:36–39.) There he pled with his
Heavenly Father to “let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not
as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:39.) The cup did not
pass and Jesus suffered “the pain of all men” (D&C 18:11), an
agony so excruciating that it caused him to bleed at every pore
                          (D&C 19:18)
Watch with me.
                      Sleep
                       v-41
41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into
temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the
flesh(natural man) is weak. Thus Watch and Pray
                    2nd time
Sleep again, for their eyes were heavy.
They did not know what was about to happen, if
they did they could not have slept.
Some time later he rejoined his apostles and
indicated that his betrayer was at hand. While he
spoke, an armed band led by Judas(kiss)
approached Jesus to seize him. Without resistance
                                    Jesus submitted.
51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck
a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall
                                          perish with the sword.
53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than

                            twelve legions of angels?
56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.

Then all the disciples forsook him, and
                     fled. ???

The 6th Day
                            overview

The Jewish leaders now faced another problem. They were not content that
Jesus should be put to death; they also wanted to discredit him before his
own people. T do this, the leaders arranged to have Jesus charged with
              o
two crimes. The first was blasphemy, a capital offense under Jewish law. He
was unanimously convicted of this charge solely on the evidence that he
had said that he was the Son of God. (See Matthew 26:57–66.) Such a
conviction would discredit Jesus before the Jews.
the rulers knew well that they could not carry out the death
penalty; only the Roman governor could pronounce this.
Therefore, they had to find political indictment against Jesus.
The surest means of securing this was the charge of sedition
against the state, for he had claimed to be a “king of the
Jews.” Though Pilate’s examination found Jesus guiltless of
the charge, the Jewish leaders had incited the crowd to
“destroy Jesus.” (Matthew 27:20.) Fearing a demonstration,
Pilate gave in to the clamor to crucify Jesus, and the death
                 sentence was pronounced.

                         Price of Blood
                        Pilate’s wife v-19
19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent
unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for
I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

Point of view if you played a minor role in the scenario of
Christ’s death? Pilate, Barabbas, wife of Pilate, Judas, Thieves.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto
                                       him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him
                                             be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water,
and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person:
                                              see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

How had they fallen so far, to say let his blood be upon us and our children? Here is a man-
prophet/miracle worker. What if he calls down angels or you can’t kill him*? Your attempt to kill him
seems fool hearty. You don’t pull on superman’s cape. If your entire life has been the study of the
God of Israel and you believe in the God of Israel, might you be afraid of killing, or attempting to kill
one so powerfully connected to God? Have you become so blinded by hatred and fear of the loss
of your prestige that you align yourself with the devil?

           Chief Priests mock v- 41-43
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders,
                                      said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let
him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I
                              am the Son of God.

                        Death v- 50-54
Death v- 50-54
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up
                           the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the
top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints
                       which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went
into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him,
watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were
done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of
                             God.
And so Jesus was executed by the
 brutal Roman practice of crucifixion.
Later that afternoon he voluntarily gave
up his spirit. The next day, which began
at sundown, was the Passover, and the
Jewish leaders abhorred the idea that a
man should remain on a cross on the
   Sabbath, particularly the paschal
Sabbath. Before nightfall, Jesus’ body
was removed from the cross and buried
in a sealed tomb by two revering
               disciples.
The 7th Day

This was the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus’ body
remained in the tomb, but in spirit he ministered in
the realm of departed spirits. (See 1 Peter 3:18–
                        20.
1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to
dawn toward the first day of the week, came
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see
               the sepulchre.
2 And, behold, there was a great
earthquake: for the angel of the Lord
descended from heaven, and came and
rolled back the stone from the door, and sat
                  upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his
raiment white as snow: (New Testament,
           Matthew, Chapter 28)
Women at the crucifixion, women visiting
the tomb, women the first to see Christ.
Diff between men and women when it
comes to the promptings of the spirit?
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre
with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his
                 disciples word.
9 ¶And as they went to tell his disciples, behold,
Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came
and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go
tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and
there shall they see me. (New Testament,
             Matthew, Chapter 28)
A joyful run. First to see the
resurrected Christ. I would love to be
   the messenger in this instance.
Held him by the feet, why?

What was their scheme?
17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but
                  some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All
power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 ¶Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Ghost: (New Testament, Matthew,
                    Chapter 28)
Apostles become apostles, one sent forth.
Easier or tougher without the presence of
Christ? Leaders rather than followers. The
      speakers rather than hearers.
At some point you have to step up to the
                   plate.
Might Peter have reservations about his
               worthiness?
The spirit is willing but the flesh is week.
God loves our spirit, but puts up with our
    flesh (understands) its a process.

Christ's last week

  • 1. The Last Week of Christ's Life. MATT: 20
  • 3. Public Ministry 2 parts: Pronouncement of messiahship Train Apostles Many people had acknowledged Jesus as the promised Messiah. This infuriated the Jewish leadership.
  • 5. Jesus arrived at Jerusalem. donkey and a colt, “the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee” placed palm branches hosanna shout: He went directly to the temple, and according to Mark, took note of what he saw and retired to Bethany for the night.
  • 6. 2nd day Temple - drive out money changers, which were sanctioned by the Jewish leadership. Righteous anger? Are their something's that Christ personally finds hateful? Did Christ choose his miracles and actions or was he always prompted by the father?
  • 7. Jesus’ wrath in the temple raised the issue of authority, and the priests were not about to let the incident pass. As Jesus came to the temple the next day, the priests challenged him: “By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?” (Matthew 21:23.) Jesus responded by relating a series of parables that offended the religious leaders of the Jews. The scribes and Pharisees challenged him again; Jesus openly denounced them and condemned them as hypocrites.
  • 8. Ch. 21 parable 2 sons Work? No - later repented and did. Work? Yes - but did not. Publicans and harlots better. Why?
  • 9. Many of christ's parables start with The kingdom of heaven is like... How would you describe it?
  • 10. Ch. 22 Parable Marriage of the king's son - wedding feast Invitation - made light of. Those that were invited became unworthy. Others took their place. Born in the covenant, unfaithful, others will take your place. V-14 many are called but few are chosen.
  • 11. P & S combine to question Christ. P - lawful, tribute, render to Caesar. S - resurrection, odd scenario about wives. V-23 ye do err. P &S unhappy try another tactic Lawyer - greatest commandment 2? Christ puts 1 question to them, which they answer wrong, making them look foolish. Realize that Christ is unschooled, as the rabbis have been. No one has been able to match wits with the educated elite. Their livelihood is in jeopardy, thus Christ's removal is the only option. After this episode the questions cease, and the plan to abduct becomes the focus of the P & S.
  • 12. Ch. 23 Woe Serpents Vipers Blind guides Damnation Hell Hypocrites V- 24, 33, 37 Christ seems to have a serious dislike for hypocrites.
  • 13. “Harry Emerson Fosdick observed that there are two kinds of hypocrisy: when we try to appear better than we are, and when we let ourselves appear worse than we are. We have been speaking of the kind of hypocrisy where people pretend to be more or better than they are. T often, however, we see members of the oo Church who in their hearts know and believe, but through fear of public opinion fail to stand up and be counted. This kind of hypocrisy is as serious as the other” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1970, 52–53)
  • 14. From this point on, Jesus did not teach the public, but only the Twelve. Perceiving that Jesus had gained the upper hand in their confrontations, the Jewish leaders consulted again how they might bring about Jesus’ death. They would have to move quickly before the Passover to avoid a riot, however, since Jesus had become very popular with the Jewish people. How to bring about an arrest without provoking crowd reaction was the problem. An unexpected turn of events that took place abetted their plot. One of Jesus’ own disciples offered to betray him.
  • 15. Jesus well knew of the plot. The fourth day was spent outside the city, perhaps at Bethany. The record of the gospel writers is silent on the proceedings of this day.
  • 16. Ch. 25 Jesus gives the parables of the ten virgins, the talents, and the sheep and the goats. (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 25)
  • 17. 10 virgins - moral of the story? The Talents - moral of the story? It wasn't until lately that I began to understand the parable of the ten virgins in a different way. Now I understand better the pain that both sides must have felt. Now I see that the parable is not one of five who are righteous and five who are wicked, but about ten righteous people, five of whom believed they understood and could control their circumstances. It wasn't just a matter of not being prepared, it was a matter of feeling that someone else would solve their problems for them.
  • 18. Sheep and Goats Differences between the animals.
  • 19. 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 25)
  • 20. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 25)
  • 21. 1:39 1. A poor, wayfaring Man of grief Hath often crossed me on my way, Who sued so humbly for relief That I could never answer nay. I had not pow’r to ask his name, Whereto he went, or whence he came; Yet there was something in his eye That won my love; I knew not why.
  • 22. 2. Once, when my scanty meal was spread, He entered; not a word he spake, Just perishing for want of bread. I gave him all; he blessed it, brake, And ate, but gave me part again. Mine was an angel’s portion then, For while I fed with eager haste, The crust was manna to my taste.
  • 23. 3. I spied him where a fountain burst Clear from the rock; his strength was gone. The heedless water mocked his thirst; He heard it, saw it hurrying on. I ran and raised the suff’rer up; Thrice from the stream he drained my cup, Dipped and returned it running o’er; I drank and never thirsted more.
  • 24. 4. ’Twas night; the floods were out; it blew A winter hurricane aloof. I heard his voice abroad and flew T bid him welcome to my roof. o I warmed and clothed and cheered my guest And laid him on my couch to rest, Then made the earth my bed and seemed In Eden’s garden while I dreamed.
  • 25. 5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death, I found him by the highway side. I roused his pulse, brought back his breath, Revived his spirit, and supplied Wine, oil, refreshment—he was healed. I had myself a wound concealed, But from that hour forgot the smart, And peace bound up my broken heart.
  • 26. 6. In pris’n I saw him next, condemned T meet a traitor’s doom at morn. o The tide of lying tongues I stemmed, And honored him ’mid shame and scorn. My friendship’s utmost zeal to try, He asked if I for him would die. The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill, But my free spirit cried, “I will!”
  • 27. 7. Then in a moment to my view The stranger started from disguise. The tokens in his hands I knew; The Savior stood before mine eyes. He spake, and my poor name he named, “Of me thou hast not been ashamed. These deeds shall thy memorial be; Fear not, thou didst them unto me.”
  • 28. The 5th Day Jesus had arranged to commemorate the Passover meal in a home privately reserved for him and the Twelve. Following the Passover meal, Jesus introduced a new ordinance, the sacrament, which presaged his atoning sacrifice. He then prophesied of his death and indicated who would betray him. Specifics, becomes real, plan of action.
  • 29. Matt: 26 Ch. 26: v-2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. Passover? - Ancient Israel Betrayed? - Chief Priest - Caiaphas - planned and measured Crucified? - Romans Crucifixion

  • 33. Judas - ? pieces of silver 21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? Psychological Hell.
  • 34. Hymn before Gethsemane. What would you like to hear that would pick up your spirits? What hymn? Find one - HW -put it on your phone or Ipod. I’m going to ask tomorrow, and I want to know why.
  • 35. Peter’s declaration of faith 33 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. 34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 35 Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples. Peter’s crisis of faith 72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. 73 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. 74 Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. - Not very Rock like. However?
  • 36. After some instructions, Jesus offered his great intercessory prayer. Then, with the eleven (Judas had left), Jesus led them outside the walls to a familiar spot—Gethsemane. Then taking Peter, James, and John with him, he went further into the Garden where he then left those three and went off by himself to pray. (See Matthew 26:36–39.) There he pled with his Heavenly Father to “let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matthew 26:39.) The cup did not pass and Jesus suffered “the pain of all men” (D&C 18:11), an agony so excruciating that it caused him to bleed at every pore (D&C 19:18)
  • 37. Watch with me. Sleep v-41 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh(natural man) is weak. Thus Watch and Pray 2nd time Sleep again, for their eyes were heavy. They did not know what was about to happen, if they did they could not have slept.
  • 38. Some time later he rejoined his apostles and indicated that his betrayer was at hand. While he spoke, an armed band led by Judas(kiss) approached Jesus to seize him. Without resistance Jesus submitted. 51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. 52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. 53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
  • 39. 56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled. ??? Jesus was brought to an illegal trial that night. T connotes established laws. rial Many we're broken, to quickly dismiss Jesus.
  • 40. The 6th Day overview The Jewish leaders now faced another problem. They were not content that Jesus should be put to death; they also wanted to discredit him before his own people. T do this, the leaders arranged to have Jesus charged with o two crimes. The first was blasphemy, a capital offense under Jewish law. He was unanimously convicted of this charge solely on the evidence that he had said that he was the Son of God. (See Matthew 26:57–66.) Such a conviction would discredit Jesus before the Jews.
  • 41. the rulers knew well that they could not carry out the death penalty; only the Roman governor could pronounce this. Therefore, they had to find political indictment against Jesus. The surest means of securing this was the charge of sedition against the state, for he had claimed to be a “king of the Jews.” Though Pilate’s examination found Jesus guiltless of the charge, the Jewish leaders had incited the crowd to “destroy Jesus.” (Matthew 27:20.) Fearing a demonstration, Pilate gave in to the clamor to crucify Jesus, and the death sentence was pronounced.
  • 42. 6th Day specifics Matt: 27 Judas - repents - regrets - dies. Price of Blood Pilate’s wife v-19 19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. Point of view if you played a minor role in the scenario of Christ’s death? Pilate, Barabbas, wife of Pilate, Judas, Thieves.
  • 43. 22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. How had they fallen so far, to say let his blood be upon us and our children? Here is a man- prophet/miracle worker. What if he calls down angels or you can’t kill him*? Your attempt to kill him seems fool hearty. You don’t pull on superman’s cape. If your entire life has been the study of the God of Israel and you believe in the God of Israel, might you be afraid of killing, or attempting to kill one so powerfully connected to God? Have you become so blinded by hatred and fear of the loss of your prestige that you align yourself with the devil?
  • 44. Soldiers v- 27-31 Simon - Cross bearer Watched Chief Priests mock v- 41-43 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. Death v- 50-54
  • 45. Death v- 50-54 50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. 54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
  • 46. And so Jesus was executed by the brutal Roman practice of crucifixion. Later that afternoon he voluntarily gave up his spirit. The next day, which began at sundown, was the Passover, and the Jewish leaders abhorred the idea that a man should remain on a cross on the Sabbath, particularly the paschal Sabbath. Before nightfall, Jesus’ body was removed from the cross and buried in a sealed tomb by two revering disciples.
  • 47. The 7th Day This was the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus’ body remained in the tomb, but in spirit he ministered in the realm of departed spirits. (See 1 Peter 3:18– 20.
  • 48. 1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 28)
  • 49.

  • 51. Women at the crucifixion, women visiting the tomb, women the first to see Christ. Diff between men and women when it comes to the promptings of the spirit?
  • 52. 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. 9 ¶And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. (New Testament, Matthew, Chapter 28)
  • 53. A joyful run. First to see the resurrected Christ. I would love to be the messenger in this instance. Held him by the feet, why?
