• Virus - A computer virus is a computer program that can copy
itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge
of the user
• Malware - Malware is a general term for software programs
that have been designed with or can be used for malicious
intent. These include viruses, worms and Trojans.
• Worm - A computer worm is a self-replicating computer
program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other
computers
5. Internet Security Terms to Know.
• Trojans - a class of computer threat that appears to perform a
desirable function but in fact performs undisclosed malicious
functions. They can be easily and unwittingly downloaded.
• For example, if a computer game is designed such that, when
started by the user, it opens a back door that allows a hacker to
control the computer of the user, then the computer game is
said to be a Trojan horse.
• A lot of the illegal programs on Pirate sites, are infected with
Trojans.

• Firewall - a security system consisting of a combination of
hardware and software that limits the exposure of a computer
or computer network to attack from crackers; commonly used
on local area networks that are connected to the internet.
• If you have broadband the router provided will protect you
from anyone coming in directly from the internet.
• You need to ensure that your computer is protected to stop any
unwanted programs from accessing the information that is on
it.

threats to your online safety.
• If you wish to access the internet safely then the
minimum you will need is a good free antivirus package
to stop unwanted programs being downloaded onto your
computer. We recommend AVG
• If you wish to prevent your kids or anyone else using your
computer from accessing unwanted sites you cant watch
them all the time so you need a good free internet filter

9. • Once you have clicked the download button, simply follow
the instructions on the screen.
• You will have to follow a series of screens where the answer
will usually be Yes or Agree.
• Then it will ask you to confirm installation, so just click on
Install.
• Once installed, the software may have to update itself
against the latest threats, let it do this.
• When that is done, we would recommend that you run a
complete computer scan.
• Make a cup of tea, it could be a while.
