Đặt câu hỏi là nguyên tắc đầu tiên cho người cố vấn. Điều thú vị là mentee có thể trải nghiệm sức mạnh của việc tự đặt câu hỏi cho bản thân họ. Lành không ngần ngại hỏi mentor rất nhiều những câu hỏi khác nhau. Hơn thế nữa, cô bắt đầu thử kiểm tra đồng nghiệp cũng như các quản lý của công ty bằng cách đặt các câu hỏi thay vì nói với họ cô muốn họ làm gì. Cô cũng tự hỏi bản thân mình rất nhiều và điều đó dường như khiến đội nhóm của cô thực hành đặt câu hỏi nhiều hơn. Có những lúc Lành cảm thấy những thành viên trong nhóm sử dụng những câu hỏi như một cách để giải thích và né tránh trách nhiệm. Đó là cả một sự nỗ lực lớn khi Lành cố gắng sửa lại văn hoá của công ty bằng cách đặt những câu hỏi. Sau một vài tháng, Lành bắt đầu thấy nhóm của cô đã có thể tự đưa ra nhưng quyết định và tự giải quyết vấn đề của mình. Cô cũng kiểm soát cảm xúc của mình tốt hơn trong việc ứng xử với những mối quan hệ kinh doanh và gia đình.
Sẽ chẳng có phép kỳ diệu nào xuất hiện trong suốt quá trình làm việc cùng cố vấn cả. Mentee cần thời gian để lĩnh hội kiến thức, kinh nghiệm cũng như tìm ra câu trả lời cho câu hỏi của cố vấn. Ngoài ra, mentee cũng phải dành thời gian chờ đợi những tình huống thích hợp để áp dụng các giải pháp mà họ đã rút ra được qua những buổi làm việc cùng mentor của mình. Cuối cùng, kết quả chỉ đến sau một khoảng thời gian, có thể ngắn, có thể dài, và điều này phụ thuộc rất nhiều vào tính kiên nhẫn của mentee.
Phải mất tới nửa năm Lành mới tìm ra được logic đằng sau những gợi ý và câu hỏi mà mentor đặt cho cô. Cô giữ lại rất nhiều những mẩu giấy ghi chép sau mỗi buổi gặp mặt mentor, xem lại và cố gắng sâu chuỗi những điều đó. Đây là bài tập về nhà của mỗi tháng. “Điều đó rất xứng đáng. Sau 6 tháng, tôi nhận ra rằng đó là tư duy logic và là một phương pháp giải quyết vấn đề trong sự hướng dẫn từ mentor. Và điều quan trọng nhất là thói quen tư duy mà mentor đã dạy cho tôi xuyên suốt các buổi cố vấn, giúp cho tôi tự động xác định vấn đề và cách tôi tiếp cận nó sau này,” Lành chia sẻ.
