According to NY-based maritime ad adviser, Basil Karatzas, “There is little detail about
Trump’s trade policy, but his overall protectionist, anti-globalization stance will likely
hurt shipping—an industry that thrives on low trading barriers for goods. In the short
term, the shock effect to the markets will likely lead to lower trading volumes at a time
when shipping companies report earnings in bright red numbers.”
Aggressive and Drastic Reforms
In particular, the incoming administration’s promise on cutting ties with the transatlantic
trade and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), together with the taxation of
China-based products, will hurt the shipping industry; since the majority of small to
medium logistics businesses rely on low trading agreements from the transatlantic
region and China.

3. In retrospect, however, President-elect Trump’s plans will undoubtedly reinvigorate the
US economy on some levels. But, the repercussions made by forceful adaptations will
outweigh the benefits. The Wall Street Journal reports, “This doesn’t help the shipping
industry at a time when global trade is forecast to grow by just 1.7% this year, marking
the slowest pace since the 2008 financial crisis, according to the World Trade
Organization.”
Affected Industries
Reshaping the shipping industry equates to changing how multinational to local
shipment operators work; as more than 90% of the country’s global exports and
imports range from clothes, electronics, equipment, machines, food, and furniture.
Maersk, one of the leading lines in the industry states, “The U.S. is an important market
for us, and a big influence across the world. It’s too early to speculate about how the
election result will impact our business.”
