Among its recent news, the ASCP commended the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS) on its decision to not move forward with a proposal to revise Medicare's Six Protected
Classes policy. The policy ensures Medicare patient can access the treatment they require.
According to its public statement, the ASCP holds the position that the proposed changes would
weaken access for patients. The organization was joined in its position by stakeholders and more
than 20 patient advocacy organizations through a collaboration with the Partnership for Part D
Access in advocating for the new policy.
4. ASCP Commends CMS Decision on Medicare's Six
Protected Classes
The ASCP announcement went on to state that the organization was disappointed CMS chose not
to reform pharmacy direct and indirect remuneration fees (DIR). It stated that a loophole still exists
through which DIR fees unfairly raise the out-of-pocket costs of medication for seniors and
increased overall costs for the government.
