since 1912, videos and DVDs since 1984 after the video recording act was
passed in 1984.

Who funds/organises it? - Local authorities organise the BBFCʼs
certificate granting and then they pass it on to local distributers.
The movies organiser /Company funds the BBFC. The BBFC funds
its own employees and equipment with this money. The BBFC is an
non profit organisation. Movie companies pay for the certificates for
movies.
What pays for film classification?
The Movie company that made the film is responsible for paying for
the film classification and all of the BBFCʼs feeʼs for classifying that
movie.
Why do you think it was set up?
I think that it was setup to create a national board that reviews
movies and gives them certificate and ratings. It think it was needed
to ensure kids grow up well and not make them think that swearing
is okay.
What do the different classifications mean?
2. U - The most basic of classifications suited for the youngest of
audiences. Ages four years and over. Uʼs should be within a
positive moral framework.
PG - General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for
young children. PG stands for parent /guardian and means that any
child of a young age that wishes to see the film needs to be
accompanied by an adult at all times during viewing.
12A & 12 - Content best suited in general for kids 12 and over.
Maybe seen as inappropriate or upsetting to children of a younger
audience.
15 - No-one younger than 15 may see a ʻ15ʼ film in a cinema. No-
one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ʻ15ʼ rated video work.
18 - No-one younger than 18 may see an ʻ18ʼ film in a cinema. No-
one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ʻ18ʼ rated video work.
Scenes from 18 rated films will be disturbing to the younger
audiences.
Try to find an example where the BBFC have rejected a film/
game/text. Why was this?
The BBFC rejected The Human Centipede II: The Full Sequence
because of many aspects including the sexual arousal of the central
character at both the idea and the spectacle of the total
degradation, humiliation, mutilation, torture, and murder of his
naked victims.
Do we need a BBFC? How successful do you think the BBFC
is?
3. We do need a BBFC definitely to make sure that younger
audiences are not introduced to adult content. We also need the
BBFC to keep regulation on what movies are suitable to be passed
and what can be regulated for viewing.
The BBFC is very successful in what it was put in place to do. It has
achieved monumental break through in many different sections of
its industry. The BBFC is reliable because movie companies trust
them to certificate their movies.
