Career History
Tesco Early Careers Team 2013 – Present
After my time in Tesco stores, I transferred to the office. My role from March 2013 was the
team administrator and have since helped support Graduate Inductions, organise training
days, plan and orchestrate 4 week store placements for office graduates and much more. I
have been placed into a ‘stretch’ position and have taken work on, whilst handing over very
little. My biggest achievement is designing the 2015 Internship Programme.
Tesco Store Graduate Scheme 2012 – 2013
I started the scheme in September 2012 and was based in Tesco Express stores until March
2013. By this time I was successfully signed off as a Deputy Manager, responsible for
running the shop whilst the Store Manager was absent. My responsibilities included:
colleague training and support, working towards KPI targets (sales, shrink and waste), self-
development whilst managing a team and ensuring great customer service at all times.
2. Wickes 2007 – 2012
I was a part-time shopfloor customer assistant providing product information and advice to
customers. I was considered a valuable asset, often being asked to help train new
colleagues and consider the employability of temporary hires.
Skills
Numeracy. As part of the statistics modules in my degree and the mathematical
aspect of my final year project, I was required to have a good, flexible understanding
of numeracy.
Excel, Word and Outlook. I am adept at using computer programs, and am
proficient with Word, Excel and Outlook. I’ve needed a good understanding of these
to be effective in my role in the Tesco Early Careers Team.
Communication. I am an excellent communicator and manage to convey my
meaning vocally in a way that I can build a good understanding and rapport with
others.
Research and Networking Skills. In order to perform well at University, I
developed keen essay and project research skills. I have also found this at Tesco,
where I have needed to network with the right teams to obtain the information
needed when I wasn’t an expert in the area.
Presentation Skills. During my time at Tesco my confidence with public speaking
has grown and have spoken at events, both in a formal and informal manner.
Self-motivation and time-management. I achieved a first in my degree, whilst
also working a part-time job to fund living and studies plus leisure activities. In my
final year I was also writing a book whilst dedicating time to my degree.
Reliability. I rarely take sick days from work. I am always on time and I am
constantly relied upon to perform the critical jobs at work meticulously.
Teamwork. I enjoy working as a team and seeing the fruits of a joint labour. I also
appreciate when the need comes to work independently, and like keeping my work
to the high standards I set myself.
Interests
Learning and customer service. I am interested in learning about my workplace.
I take great fulfilment from being a knowledgeable expert in my role, so that I can
help customers or colleagues with their queries whilst building great relationships
with them.
Humour and great place to work. What really matters to me is being able to be
myself at work. Humour is key and I thrive in an atmosphere that appreciates it.
Outside of work. During my final year of University I started work on a series of
books called The Deian War. I have since finished the fifth and last in the series,
which I have self-published on Amazon. My favourite get-away is a theme park
where excitement, fun and facing fears are all combined into one.
Additional Information
I do not have a driving licence at present, but will be taking driving lessons early
next year.
I have Type 1 Insulin-dependent Diabetes. My control is stable and has been for the
last 10 years.
