My work as Senior Teacher at British Council Valencia
1. My work as Senior Teacher at British Council Valencia, Spain
As member of the change-managementteam, I am currently
involved in re-structuring our adultcourses, making them more
attractive to our students by shortening the number of hours and
making the courses moreflexible to allow students to do as many or as
few modules as they need in order to progress to the next level.
• For seven years I havebeen responsiblefor organising our
September teaching conference, organising speakers, giving talks myself
and making surethat everything runs smoothly. This year’s conference
was the most successfulto date, with nearly 150 participants.
• Since October 2013 I havegiven four presentations, two in Spanish
and two in English. The firstone was a repetition of the one given the
previous year to heads of schools federated to FECEVAL, in which I
presented our courses to them. Like the previous occasion, this resulted in
contract being signed for a number of groups of teachers to preparefor
B1 and B2 exams. I also gavea presentation at TESOL Alicante in January
on oral assessmentin the classroom. Thetwo most recent talks were
cultural ones on the subjectof WWI poets, one in English at the central
library and the other in Spanish at the InstitutFrançais.
• For the pastfifteen years I havebeen instrumentalin formulating
and putting into practice our INSETTtraining programme, including the
organisation of our In-Housedays, based on our Teaching centre’s training
priorities and staff’s developmental needs. I also deliver workshops on
pedagogical matters as part of this program
• I have actively pursued ways of giving our customers added value,
by organising film and conversation clubs, and creating a ‘Classroom
Phrasebook’ for students to use as a reference guide to aid them in
maximizing their use of English in class.
• I have made contact with ADECCO, an outside training organisation,
to provide training to our admin staff, and havepromoted the useof the
Tripartite programmeto cover the costs of staff training. We arranged
2. that Adecco would help our own students to get subsidies for their
courses at the British Council Valencia, thus showing our desireto make
our courses as accessible as possiblein the present difficult economic
climate.
• I played a key role instrumentalin making contact with the local
education authority with a view to getting our courses recognised for
State Schoolteacher training purposes.
• I have helped to forge very profitable relationships with outside
organisations such as FECEVAL (Federación de Centros de Educación), El
Palau de les Arts, Los Dominicos, El InstitutValencià de Finances and
other important corporateclients etc. This has entailed making the initial
contact and explaining the role of the Council and the nature of our
operation; and the quality, professionalismand added value we can give.
Then developing the relationship, which may not produceimmediate
benefit but which represents an important contact, winning agreements,
implementing programmes, monitoring quality and satisfaction, following
up and exploring the continuation of the relationship.
• I have been responsiblefor setting up, explaining and promoting
our Continuous Assessmentsystemto teachers during the last 4 years.
This has involved working together with colleagues in Barcelona, and
adapting their systemto one which fits in with our teachers’ and students’
needs. I also work closely with our Continuous Assessmentco-ordinator,
doing presentations at In HouseDays and providing supportand academic
guidance to teachers.
• I was invited to take partin the first meetings to look into the
specifications for a replacement for the BC Placement Test. When the ILA,
was rolled out, I was responsiblefor working outhow it tallied to our
courses and adapting it to our placement procedure, and giving
information sessions to placement testers.
• I was in charge of overseeing The British Council CEF project, which
meant liaising with the global manager and the teacher wehad chosen to
lead on this in Valencia in order to map our courses to the CEF, and later
3. to oversee the mapping of our syllabito the CEF. Once morethis involved
training and presenting the projectto teachers at In-housesessions.
