Nature of Work:
The Director of Public Works is responsible for the daily administration, supervision and
management of the Public Works Department for a community of about 12,500 in
population. The Director also serves as the City Engineer and is responsible for all
municipal infrastructure. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing,
delegating and coordinating all municipal engineering and public works activities.
Responsible for determining, implementing and enforcing major departmental policies.
This position reports directly to the Mayor, advises the Public Works Committee, Safety
Committee, Finance Committee and Public Improvements Committee. The Director
works regularly with the city attorney, budget director, codes enforcement, police and fire
departments.

Essential Duties:
• Supervise the daily operations of refuse collection, landfill closure, water
distribution, sanitary sewer collection & treatment, street maintenance, storm
water collection, cemetery grounds, public properties and equipment
maintenance/ replacement.
• Directly manage and coordinate all municipal engineering projects with
consultants, architects, agencies and grant administrators.
• Supervise Public Works Foreman and Union Lead Men of the various
departments in Public Works.
• Preparation of current and long range planning of all municipal capital
investments, preparation and administration of all departmental budgets, reviews
and approves expenditures of all departmental funds and capital improvements.
• Coordinates and maintains effective working relationships with various Local,
County, State and Federal agencies as well as consulting engineers, architects,
grant administrators, planning commissions and other civic leaders.
• Attends City Council Meetings, neighborhood, community informational
meetings, public hearings and other public outreach meetings as needed.
