3. Conventions of Thrillers
The technical elements of a Thriller film are key to structuring the film:
• - Camera angles are distorted - E.g. Canted angle on moment of
panic or haste.
• - Incidental music - Setting tone (Minor/major, or climbing with
pace of film to add further tension and or suspense)
• - Altered or seemingly corrupted lighting as well as general lighting
(shadow's depicting of constant, melodramatic excluded darkness)
• - Placing of mirrors (to highlight the character's (usually
protagonist's) facial expression or body language to emphasise their
state of emotion (panicked?), also - commonly used to display the
thing/reflection/shadow of the thing that is feared.
• - Use of stairs (While the character is usually escaping in
consternation of seeking out what is suspected (e.g. if a noise is
heard they explore...)
