October 2016
“A largecrowd followedhim, and he healedall whowere ill.” (Matthew12:15)
A miracle is an extraordinary eventinthe physical worldthatsurpasses all knownhumanornatural
powersandis ascribed toa supernatural cause such an effectoreventmanifestingorconsidered asa
work of God. Miracle of Jesusrange from changingwaterintowine to incidentswhereHe isknownto
have resurrecteventhe dead.Howdo we know He didthese things? We have the eyewitnesstestimony
of fourgospel writers,whorecordatleast37 miraclesof Jesus. Accordingtothe Biblical Studies
Foundation, amiracle "isan unusualand significantevent(terasa) which requirestheworking of a
supernaturalagent(dunamis) and isperformed forthepurposeof authenticatingthemessageorthe
messenger(semeion)."
While there are manyexplanationsforwhata miracle is,we can probablyall agree thatthe word
"miracle"describesaneventthatoccursoutside the boundsof natural law,andwhichisbeneficialinits
result.Duringthe course of His three-yearpublicministry,Jesusperformedmiraclesthatdemonstrated
His abilitytoheal,tomasterthe elements,toaffectthe outcome of ourendeavors,andeventoraise
the dead.Everyone of Hismiraclesoccurredoutside the boundsof natural law, andall of themhada
beneficial result.
JesusChristperformed miracles, toshow us of His deityand that God isreal,God lovesusand God
wantsto heal and restore usto abundantlife.Jesusdidn’tonlyheal afew sickpeople, the Bible says
manytimesthat ALL whocame to Him were healed.Huge multitudesof peoplecame toHim, not only
fromIsrael but alsofromsurroundingnationsandtheybroughtall theirsickto JesusChristto be healed.
The Gospel of Matthew saysseveral timesthatALLwere healed –not a luckyfew. We can learnthis
fromMatthew 4:24, “Newsabouthim spread all over Syria, and people broughtto himall whowere ill
with variousdiseases,thosesufferingsevere pain,the demon-possessed,thosehavingseizures,and
the paralyzed;and he healed them”. We can read againfrom Matthew 15:30, “Greatcrowds came to
him,bringingthe lame,the blind,the crippled,the mute and manyothers, and laidthem at hisfeet;
and he healedthem”.
Besideshealingthe sickJesusChristdidmanymore miracles, like turninghuge amountsof waterinto
the bestpossible wine, walkingoverwaterduringastormat night, raisingseveral people fromthe dead
(some hadbeendeadforseveral days),multiplyingasmall amountof foodintoan abundance formany
thousands of veryhungrypeople, andthese are onlythe reportedcases… We can learnof the miracle
where Jesusraised Lazarusfromthe deadas we can read from John 11:40-43, “ThenJesus said, “DidI
not tell youthat if you believe, you will see the gloryof God?”41
Sotheytook awaythe stone.Then
Jesus lookedup andsaid, “Father, I thankyou that you have heard me. 42
I knew that you alwayshear
me, but I saidthis for the benefit ofthe peoplestandinghere, that they may believe that you sent
me.”43
Whenhehad saidthis, Jesuscalledin a loudvoice, “Lazarus, come out!”
The gospelsrecordat least37 detailedmiraclesof Jesus. Howeverthe apostle Johnshocksusbysaying
that the worldwouldbe toosmall,if theyhadtriedto recordall JesusChristhadsaidand done.Sowhat
has beenwrittendownisonlyasmall portionof the miraclesJesusdid. He hasdone farmore…“ We can
learnfromJohn 21:25, “Jesusdid manyother thingsaswell. If every one ofthem were written down, I
supposethat even the wholeworld wouldnot have roomfor the booksthat wouldbe written...” From
these itshowsus how absolutelyamazingJesusChristreallyis. He issomuch more than all we can
2. imagine. He came as a brightlightinthe deepdarknessof thisworldandtouchedtensof thousandsof
people withthe lifesavingpowerof the HolySpirit. He didn’tneedthe internetandsocial mediato
gathera crowd:the miraclesof Jesuswere soextremelypowerfulandsoamazingly abundantthatthe
newsspreadlike wildfire,all throughoutthe landandfarabroad.
Whenwe read throughthe specificpassages thatreportJesusmiracles,we can discoverhow
breathtakinglyawesomeJesusChristis. AsChristianswe needtobearinmind thatthe Bible wasnever
writtentoshowus onlywhatGod has done inthe past. The Bible waswritten toshow us who Godis
and whatHe wants to do in the livesof everygeneration, everywhereonearth. The Biblical recordisan
example forus, toencourage usto reach out to thisincredible Godwhoisso passionatelyactive inour
world,tobringis healing,salvationandrestorationtoall whotrulyseekHim.
A commonquestionwe come acrossiswhether Jesusstill performs miraclestoday?Afterall,we don't
see Himphysicallywalkinginourmidst - or do we?Do youknow someone whohasbeenhealedor
whose life hasbeentransformedbyarelationshipwithChrist?Thenyouhave seenamodern-day
miracle of Jesus. You,too, can be an eyewitnesstoamiracle of Christ.Like Mary, youcan ask Him,
believingHe will dowhatisbestforyou. Our prayerfor youis that a miracle of Jesusbeginsinyour
heartright now…and throughsame you toowill be a blessing forotherswhomyoucome incontact in
your dayto day life.
