26th July 2016 - The meaning of Life
1. The Meaning of Life – 26th
July 2016
“Why,youdo not even know what will happentomorrow. Whatis yourlife? Youare a mist that
appearsfor a little whileand then vanishes” (James4:14)
Meaningof Life has beenthe ultimate questionsince the beginningof mankind.Itseemsinherentinour
nature to ask questionssuchas“Where didwe come from? How didI get here? What’smypurpose on
earth?Where do I go whenIdie? What’sthe meaningof all this?”
Throughthe teachingof evolutionaryscience,materialismandmoral relativisminourpopularmedia
and publicschool system,we’ve removedGodfromthe potential answerstothese ultimate questions
of life.WithoutGod,we lose anytranscendentpurpose forthe universe inwhichwe live.WithoutGod,
we lose anytranscendentpurpose togive meaningtoourindividual lives. We are nothingmore than
bugsstrugglingwithsurvival untilwe die.Allthe achievements,the sacrifices,the goodandbeautiful
effortsof people, the uglyanddarkacts of people, are ultimatelyfutilethingsof life.
Without God, we also loseany possibility for lifeafter death. When you remove the hope of heaven, you remove
the ultimate valueand purpose of life. As Christians our ultimategoal is seekingan eternity with God through the
hope stored up for us in heaven. We can learn from Colossians 1:5, “…the faith and love that spring from the
hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel”.
The ignorantmay think: “ What difference would it really makewhether we lived likea Billy Grahamor an Osama
Bin Laden? Everyone's fate would be the same anyway”. As Christians we may come across peoplewith this
hopeless outlook specially comingfromthose who basetheir belief system on materialism, naturalismand the
presupposition thatlifeon earth is all thereis. As Christian our belief is much different because through our faith in
Jesus Christwe have God given promises for our future… and even after death! We can learn from 2 Corinthians
1:20,“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”
is spoken by us to the glory of God”.
The answerto thisquestionof meaningof life,we mustknow thatit cannot come from human
intelligence orreason, butonlyfromthe Creatorhimself whotranscendsourmaterial world.Aswe see
intoday’snaturalisticdriven society, once we removeGodfromthe equation,we startto lose all sense
of purpose formankind. AsChristianswe mustknow thatthere isa God givenpurpose inlife,
individuallyforall of us.We can learnthisfrom Romans 8:28, “Andwe knowthat in all thingsGod
works for the goodof those who love him, who[a]
have been calledaccordingto hispurpose”.
Therefore we reallydohave ainspirationalpurpose and throughsame ameaningforour lives.Notonly
do we findday-to-daysignificance inourlives, butanultimate significance throughourhope ineternal
life. We canlearnfrom 2 Timothy 1:9, “He has savedus and calledus to a holylife—notbecauseof
anythingwe have done but becauseof his ownpurpose andgrace. This grace was given usin Christ
Jesus before the beginningoftime…”
Throughthisfaithand belief inGod, we remove the moral relativismthat prevailsin today’ssociety, and
we replace itwitha standardof absolute rightandwrongresidinginthe characterof God Himself. This
givesourday-to-daychoicessignificance too.Godgave us the abilitytochoose whetherwe livebyHis
moral lawsor by whatevervalueswe assigntoourselvesthroughourownreason.Aswe find,we are
not mere robotsplacedonthisearth byGod. Rather,we have beengiventhe absolute freewill tofollow
whatGod says and wantsfromour lives orchoose otherwise…Butthe choice isours!.We can either
recognize Godas the Creatorof the universe andthatwe needHim,or one can deny Himand can
choose to live ameaninglesslife.ButwithGodfirmlyinourequationwe have the Godgivenpromise of
2. a life withabsolute andeternal purpose. AsChristians we mustalwaysrememberthatHiswill prevails
as we can learnfrom Proverbs16:9, “Intheir hearts humansplantheir course, but the LORD establishes
their steps”.
Once we’ve finishedhighschoolbiologyorcollege philosophy,that milliondollarquestion:whatisthe
meaningof Life,getsdownplayed bythe stressesof day-to-dayratrace of work,familyandthe
mortgage etc. But as a Christianwhenfacedwiththe same question, we have wonderful referencesthat
we can dependonthroughthe teachingsfoundinthe bible. If we donotknow these important
teachingsreadilyfoundinthe bible, thenwe have robbedourselvesof anyreal opportunity to
understandthe meaning, purposeand the promise of eternal life withGodinheaven.
If we don’tclearlyunderstandthe reasonforour existence inrelationtoGodsexpectationsfromus
throughour life,we become worthlesstoourselvesandalsotothe worldat large. Therefore we must
knowthat withoutreading,learningandmeditatingonteachingswe findinthe bible, ourChristian
worthis devaluedbyourselves frombeingChildrenof Godtobeingjustone of many speciesof animals
on thisearth. If you lookat the last 2000 yearsof history,it’ssad to note that mankindhas distancedus
furtherawayfrom God. We have allowed allegedintelligence and ourownreasoning totake
precedence ratherthan a life livedaccordingtothe lawsandlove of God.
The widespreadevilandsinwe see inthe worldtoday, stemsfromthislackof understanding of the
meaninginone’slife! Therefore we encourage youtoask yourself the questionagainandagain…
examine the answersandevidenceforyourselfuntil youbecome convincedastothe meaninginyour
life.We canlearnfrom 1 John 3:1, “See what great love the Father has lavishedonus, that we should
be called childrenofGod!And that is what we are! The reasonthe worlddoes not know us isthat it
didnot know him”.Therefore itisourmandate to share thisknowledge of whoGodwas, whoHe isand
whoHe will be forall of us…to as many as we can duringour short lifetime hereonearth.
