We have identified a self-adjoint and a non self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problems. We
have investigated the Birkhoff regularity of these problems.

Introduction
The study of differential operators has a long amazing history, for example in the early sev-
enteenth century Euler and d’Alembert studied vibrating strings, where eigenvalues of the
differential operators correlate with frequencies of vibrations and eigenvectors correlate with
mode of vibration. While in the eighteenth century Sturm and Liouville considered the work
of Euler and d’Alembert and studied the case in which the vibrating string’s density and ten-
sion are not uniform, which gave rise to the study of spectral theory. In the early nineteenth
century Fredholm studied in more details the concept of spectral theory which was later on
studied by Hilbert, who generalized the work of Fredholm. Hilbert introduced the idea of
compact operators. In the study of quantum mechanics differential operators play an impor-
tant role, the eigenvalues of the differential operators correlate to the discrete energy levels.
The field of differential operators involves topics such as boundary conditions, eigenvalues,
eigenfunctions, regularity, normality, minimality, maximality, boundedness, compactness, op-
erator graphs, closable, closed operators, symmetric operators, adjoint operators, self-adjoint
operators, operator extensions and operator pencils.

An eigenvalue problem consists of a differential equation and a set of boundary conditions
where either the differential operator or at least one of the boundary conditions depends on
a parameter λ. For example a fourth order eigenvalue problem will consist of a fourth order
differential equation and a set of four boundary conditions, where the differential equation or
at least one of the boundary conditions depends on the parameter λ. The small transversal
vibrations of a homogeneous beam problems investigated in [5, 7] have boundary conditions
with partial first order derivatives with respect to the time derivative t or whose mathematical
model leads to an eigenvalue problem with respect to the eigenvalue parameter λ occurring
linearly in the boundary conditions. Such problems have operator representation of the form

We have considered during this research the classification of self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue
problems which have been investigated in [7], we have used this classification to identify a self-
adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problem, as well as non self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue
problem. Mennicken and M¨oller developed in [4] important tools for the investigation of
Birkhoff regularity. We have used these useful tools to decide whether the self-adjoint and the
non self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problems are Birkhoff regular.

Theorem 3.2 gives the conditions for which the operator A(U) is self-adjoint. We have used
this theorem to find the self-adjoint fourth order problem (3.11)-(3.15) and the non self-adjoint
fourth order problem (3.16)-(3.20). We have used Proposition 4.9, Definition 4.17 to show
that the problem (3.11)-(3.15) is Birkhoff regular while the problem (3.16)-(3.20) is not.
The organization of this document is as follows: we give a presentation of basic definitions
and properties of linear operators and also of Sobolev spaces on intervals in Chapter 2. In
Chapter 3 we present fourth order differential operators. In Section 3.2 we define the fourth
order differential operators on the interval [0, a], while in Section 3.3 we present the self-
adjoint and the non self-adjoint fourth order problems we have found. In Chapter 4, we
give the definitions and properties of Birkhoff regularity in Section 4.2. We have used these
definitions and properties to investigate the Birkhoff regularity of the problems (3.11)-(3.15)
and (3.16)-(3.20). We present the results of our investigation in Section 4.3.
Chapter 2
Preliminaries
2.1 Introduction
In this chapter we present basic definitions and properties which are needed to conduct the
research we present in this document. They are important to understand the results we have
obtained during this study. We give basic definitions and properties of the linear operators in
Section 2.2, which are of paramount importance for this research. In Section 2.3 we present
definitions and properties of Sobolev spaces which have played an extensive role during this
study.

In this chapter we define fourth order λ-parameter dependent eigenvalue problems on the

Chapter 1 Introduction The study of differential operators has a long amazing history, for example in the early sev- enteenth century Euler and d’Alembert studied vibrating strings, where eigenvalues of the differential operators correlate with frequencies of vibrations and eigenvectors correlate with mode of vibration. While in the eighteenth century Sturm and Liouville considered the work of Euler and d’Alembert and studied the case in which the vibrating string’s density and ten- sion are not uniform, which gave rise to the study of spectral theory. In the early nineteenth century Fredholm studied in more details the concept of spectral theory which was later on studied by Hilbert, who generalized the work of Fredholm. Hilbert introduced the idea of compact operators. In the study of quantum mechanics differential operators play an impor- tant role, the eigenvalues of the differential operators correlate to the discrete energy levels. The field of differential operators involves topics such as boundary conditions, eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, regularity, normality, minimality, maximality, boundedness, compactness, op- erator graphs, closable, closed operators, symmetric operators, adjoint operators, self-adjoint operators, operator extensions and operator pencils. If A = A∗ then we say that the operator A is self-adjoint. An eigenvalue problem consists of a differential equation and a set of boundary conditions where either the differential operator or at least one of the boundary conditions depends on a parameter λ. For example a fourth order eigenvalue problem will consist of a fourth order differential equation and a set of four boundary conditions, where the differential equation or at least one of the boundary conditions depends on the parameter λ. The small transversal vibrations of a homogeneous beam problems investigated in [5, 7] have boundary conditions with partial first order derivatives with respect to the time derivative t or whose mathematical model leads to an eigenvalue problem with respect to the eigenvalue parameter λ occurring linearly in the boundary conditions. Such problems have operator representation of the form L(λ) = λ2 M − iαλK − A, (1.1) in the Hilbert space L2(0, a) ⊕ Ck , where α > 0 and k is the number of boundary conditions depending on λ. The matrix operators K =   0 0 0 I   , M =   I 0 0 0   are bounded self- adjoint operators and A is an unbounded operator. We have considered during this research the classification of self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problems which have been investigated in [7], we have used this classification to identify a self- adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problem, as well as non self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problem. Mennicken and M¨oller developed in [4] important tools for the investigation of Birkhoff regularity. We have used these useful tools to decide whether the self-adjoint and the non self-adjoint fourth order eigenvalue problems are Birkhoff regular. We have used this theorem to find the self-adjoint fourth order problem (3.11)-(3.15) and the non self-adjoint fourth order problem (3.16)-(3.20). We have used Proposition 4.9, Definition 4.17 to show that the problem (3.11)-(3.15) is Birkhoff regular while the problem (3.16)-(3.20) is not. The organization of this document is as follows: we give a presentation of basic definitions and properties of linear operators and also of Sobolev spaces on intervals in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 we present fourth order differential operators. In Section 3.2 we define the fourth order differential operators on the interval [0, a], while in Section 3.3 we present the self- adjoint and the non self-adjoint fourth order problems we have found. In Chapter 4, we give the definitions and properties of Birkhoff regularity in Section 4.2. We have used these definitions and properties to investigate the Birkhoff regularity of the problems (3.11)-(3.15) and (3.16)-(3.20). We present the results of our investigation in Section 4.3.

They are important to understand the results we have obtained during this study.
