2. Introduction
Thomas P. Ivanyi is a private equity consultant
and investment banking professional with more
than 25 years of experience. The CEO of two
companies, Thomas P. Ivanyi also enjoys traveling
with his wife to exotic areas such as the
Galapagos Islands.
A province of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands
were first documented by Europeans in 1535. The
Bishop of Panama, Tomas Berlanga was sailing to
Peru to settle a dispute when strong currents
instead led him to the Galapagos Islands. He
detailed the giant tortoises, sea lions, and several
sea birds, for which the islands are known today.
3. Galapagos Islands
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the Galapagos
Islands were a refuge for pirates and eventually whalers, who
came to the region in 1793 to establish sperm whale
fisheries. Herman Melville, the acclaimed author of Moby
Dick, visited the islands and made them the setting for his
1855 short story Enchanted Isles.
Charles Darwin spent five weeks in the archipelago in 1835
and took notice of the physical differences between animals
of the same species on various islands. The research
conducted by Darwin later shaped his Theory of Evolution,
which was detailed in the 1859 publication On the Origin of
Species. Today, the islands are jointly operated by the
Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin
Research Station.
