CAREER SUMMARY
Flight Safety Staff Officer 2013 - present
Delivered Flight Safety policy, training and communications objectives both within the Royal Air Force
and across the wider Defence community.
 Presented at various symposia to a variety of audiences, including military and civilian Senior
Leadership. Produced and edited the Royal Air Force’s Flight Safety magazine ‘Air Clues’ and
was the focal point for strategic Safety communications.
 Instigated and chaired a committee that supervised the safe withdrawal of people and assets from
Afghanistan; a project which ran to schedule and during which all significant hazards were forecast
and mitigated effectively.
Tornado GR4 Flight Commander and Pilot 2009 – 2013
Oversaw training for 200 people and managed and led a team of 8 Junior Officer aircrew.
 Designed and coordinated the delivery of effective training during peacetime for a squadron of 30
aircrew and 170 engineers, requiring accurate forecasting of requirement, collaboration with
engineering and operations staff, matching of resource to task and the management of short-notice
change.
 Successfully led the project for a team of 200 to Alaska, involving training, logistics, budgetary
control of c. £1 million, contingency planning and close liaison with both domestic and foreign
authorities.
Air Adviser to International Headquarters, Afghanistan 2009
Based near Kandahar, operated as part of a multinational headquarters staff tasked with delivering
security to Southern Afghanistan.
 Coordinated and led complex projects within a sensitive political framework, delivering a variety of
effects in support of Front Line forces.
 Demonstrated the tenacity to persevere with stated objectives despite a high turnover in staff and
changes to leadership and direction.
Mentor and Air Adviser to Iraqi Army 2009
Attached to a British Army team as an aviation expert, tasked with mentoring the Iraqi Army staff in
Basra, Iraq.
 Rapidly embedded into the British Army mentoring staff, so ensuring the delivery of a consistent
and coherent set of training objectives. Was fully operational within 3 days of arrival in Iraq.
 Provided the Iraqi Army staff with full operational understanding of Air Force capabilities, paving
the way for fully integrated missions involving both air and ground-based assets.
 Closely collaborated with Iraqi Senior Officers on a daily basis; this required cultural sensitivity and
emotional intelligence in order to achieve agreed objectives within an unfamiliar hierarchical
framework.
Tornado F3 Pilot 2008 - 2009
Rapidly assimilated new capabilities, key member of UK Air Defence capability and participated in
complex large-scale flying exercises.
Above Average Qualified Flying Instructor 2004 - 2008
Mentor to military student pilots. Subsequently elevated to squadron Deputy Commander role.
 Demonstrated a thorough awareness of the technical, procedural, operational and functional
aspects of flying, then the ability to successfully impart these traits to students. Engendered a
sense of pride and teamwork amongst the student cadre.
 Due to consistently strong performance, was selected to attend an Instructor upgrade course 3
months earlier than forecast; successfully graduated and was awarded an Above Average
categorisation.
 Assigned to be the Deputy Commander, leading a team of 25 staff and 40 students. Combined
this management role with ongoing instructional flying. Quickly learnt that communication,
flexibility and empathy are vital attributes of a successful leader. Consistently ensured that student
courses were completed ahead of schedule by managing tight constraints on manpower, time and
resource.
Tornado F3 Pilot 2001 - 2004
Tasked with mastering all aspects of Air Defence including the handling skills, systems knowledge, Crew
Resource Management and stringent professional qualities expected of a professional pilot.
 Participated in several deployments overseas, including in Iraq, the Falkland Islands, the USA and
Jordan.
 Successfully upgraded to 4-aircraft formation leader status in recognition of my professional
development and supervisory maturity.
TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS
 Graduate of Intermediate Command and Staff Course, Joint Services Command and Staff College
(2013).
 Honours Degree in Physics from Imperial College, London (1997).
 A-levels in Physics, Mathematics and Geography from King George V School, Hong Kong.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS
A passionate downhill skier, yacht sailor and sportsman who enjoys running, mountain biking and hiking.
A keen traveller and musician, who plays the bass guitar rather badly.
