specialeffects, and famous names can certainly
draw in crowds, thereis much to besaid forthe
moreintimateproductions.Oneofthe
quintessentialNew York attractions is our
collection ofvaried cultures- and what betterway
to connect than with theater?
Opening June4th at St.Luke’s theater(308West
46th Street), this off-Broadway show is as simple
as they come.They CallMeQ has been performed
at theUnited Nations and across theUnited
States, and is essentially thestory ofone
woman, Qurrat Ann Kadwani.Sprinkled
throughout herlifearea dozen orso characters
that sheimpressively channels, from Caucasian
teachers to Puerto Rican classmates.It ends up
being pretty funny and quitetouching, ranging
between impressions and a solid talethat is quite
engaging.Theirdescription is pretty apt:it’s a
story ofan “Indian girlgrowing up in theBoogie
Down Bronx who gracefully seeks balance
between theculturalpressures brought forth by
hertraditionalparents and wanting acceptance
into hernew culture”.
But what it misses is thecomedy and deft touch
brought to thestage, as weprogress from the
requisiterough childhood to an adulthood with
theexpected pressures ofmarriageand
conformity.A few smallprops aside, it’s Qurrat’s
journey holding yourfocus theentiretime, a
tough solo act with only a few music cues and no
intermission to takeyou out ofherworld.
Confident and blissfully forward, you’rein safe
hands here, with nothing too adult and a show
safeforthewholefamily.Wewished fora little
moreat theend- it stops sort ofabruptly.
