RRiot on the Dance Floor
Saturday-January 31-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8
Fur Peace Ranch: It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This – Andie Walla (Athens, Ohio)
Fur Peace Ranch is a guitar camp tucked away in the beautiful hills of southeast Ohio. Founded by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Hot
Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, FPR is a place where music comes to life and musical fellowships flourish. Kaukonen and many other
musicians teach weekend workshops and share their musical wisdom. This documentary is a glimpse into what Fur Peace Ranch is all
about and explains why thousands keep coming back. 2014; 24 min.
Riot on the Dance Floor: The Story of Randy Now and City Gardens – Steve Tozzi (Columbus, New Jersey) This in your face
documentary features the stark and iconic photography of Thrasher Magazine's Ken Salerno. It is told through an oral history format of in-
depth interviews and archival footage, bringing to life the gritty story of one of New Jersey's most infamous clubs and its larger than life
promoter. Riot on the Dance Floor chronicles the rise of several different music scenes in a venue for underground music that traversed the
entertainment spectrum; from the comedy of Henny Youngman to Nine Inch Nails, New Order to Nirvana. It is also the story of a music
business lifer; a road warrior, part-time musician, radio host and former postal worker who went looking for a place to spin his New Wave
records and ended up building an independent movement out of nothing in Trenton, a city stuck between New York and Philadelphia. It is
the story of the unheard underground and the collective creativity that came out of it: the artists, the writers, the photographers, the ‘zines
and labels. It is the story of musical champions, underdogs and how hoards of misfit kids found an unlikely home and above all, the
freedom and liberation of having complete creative control. 2014; 114 min. With an introduction and Q+A session by Director Steve
Tozzi, Producer Peter Tabbot and Randy Now!
Thursday- February 5-Ruth Adams Bldg. #001-6PM $10/$9/$8
Eadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer - Thom Anderson, Fay Anderson, Morgan Fisher
A brilliant, innovative film about the origins of cinema and its most famed forefather, Eadweard Muybridge. Over the course of a decade,
filmmaker Thom Andersen animated Muybridge's landmark photographic studies of humans and animals in motion. Interpolated with these
incredible sequences are biographical sections detailing Muybridge's personal and professional struggles, narrated by Dean Stockwell.
Drawing the contrasts between Muybridge's reclusive lifestyle and the explosive public birth of cinema, Eadweard Muybridge is both a film
about cinematic history and a work of art in itself. 1975; 60 min. With commentary by Festival Director Albert G. Nigrin.
Friday- February 6-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8
El Mar Y Él – Tony Méndez (Miami, Florida)
An irrepressible comedy about a man's quest to flee Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift. Havana, Cuba, 1980. Fidel Castro opens the
floodgates for Cuban emigrants to leave the country, giving priority to criminals and the mentally insane. This was the beginning of the
Mariel Boatlift, an event that would change the lives of 125,000 Cubans and forever change the United States' immigration policies. After
finding out that his wife is pregnant, Ricardo realizes that this is no place to raise a child and comes up with a plan to leave the country
with the 'marielitas.' Then everything goes awry. In Spanish, subtitled. 2014; 23 min.

barriers. 2014; 20 min.
Girls' Show - David Krantz (New York, New York)
In most American high schools, the biggest event of the year is the homecoming football game, or prom, or graduation, but for the
community of Passaic Valley, NJ, nothing is bigger than Girls' Show. The one-night-only annual event is an high-energy-higher-stakes
competition in categories like dance and cheerleading with the whole community watching. Every year, the residents of Passaic Valley face
one decision: whether to cheer for White or Green at Girls' Show. The rivalry dates back to the 1940’s, long before the fight for women's
equality in athletics found a voice. Girls were banned from school sports, and Girls' Show was created as a forward-thinking symbol of
equality. For this community, Girls' Show is bigger than the Superbowl and this fine documentary does an excellent job of showing us why.

Films by Stan Brakhage
Stan Brakhage is one of the most important figures in 20th-century American experimental film. Over the course of five decades, he
explored a variety of formats, approaches, and techniques that included hand-held camerawork; painting directly onto celluloid; fast cutting;
in-camera editing; scratching on film; and the use of multiple exposures. Inspired by mythology, music, poetry and visual phenomena,
Brakhage sought to reveal the universal in the particular, exploring themes of birth, mortality, sexuality, and innocence. His films are
intensely expressive and lyrical. The films to be screened include new film prints of Mothlight, Fire of Waters, Creation, Prelude: Dog Star
Man and others. 1959-1979; 70 min. With commentary by Festival Director Albert G. Nigrin.

  • 1. The Rutgers Film Co-op/New Jersey Media Arts Center and the Rutgers University Program In Cinema Studies present the New Jersey Film Festival sm Spring 2015 Information: www.njfilmfest.com RRiot on the Dance Floor Saturday-January 31-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8 Fur Peace Ranch: It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This – Andie Walla (Athens, Ohio) Fur Peace Ranch is a guitar camp tucked away in the beautiful hills of southeast Ohio. Founded by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, FPR is a place where music comes to life and musical fellowships flourish. Kaukonen and many other musicians teach weekend workshops and share their musical wisdom. This documentary is a glimpse into what Fur Peace Ranch is all about and explains why thousands keep coming back. 2014; 24 min. Riot on the Dance Floor: The Story of Randy Now and City Gardens – Steve Tozzi (Columbus, New Jersey) This in your face documentary features the stark and iconic photography of Thrasher Magazine's Ken Salerno. It is told through an oral history format of in- depth interviews and archival footage, bringing to life the gritty story of one of New Jersey's most infamous clubs and its larger than life promoter. Riot on the Dance Floor chronicles the rise of several different music scenes in a venue for underground music that traversed the entertainment spectrum; from the comedy of Henny Youngman to Nine Inch Nails, New Order to Nirvana. It is also the story of a music business lifer; a road warrior, part-time musician, radio host and former postal worker who went looking for a place to spin his New Wave records and ended up building an independent movement out of nothing in Trenton, a city stuck between New York and Philadelphia. It is the story of the unheard underground and the collective creativity that came out of it: the artists, the writers, the photographers, the ‘zines and labels. It is the story of musical champions, underdogs and how hoards of misfit kids found an unlikely home and above all, the freedom and liberation of having complete creative control. 2014; 114 min. With an introduction and Q+A session by Director Steve Tozzi, Producer Peter Tabbot and Randy Now! Thursday- February 5-Ruth Adams Bldg. #001-6PM $10/$9/$8 Eadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer - Thom Anderson, Fay Anderson, Morgan Fisher A brilliant, innovative film about the origins of cinema and its most famed forefather, Eadweard Muybridge. Over the course of a decade, filmmaker Thom Andersen animated Muybridge's landmark photographic studies of humans and animals in motion. Interpolated with these incredible sequences are biographical sections detailing Muybridge's personal and professional struggles, narrated by Dean Stockwell. Drawing the contrasts between Muybridge's reclusive lifestyle and the explosive public birth of cinema, Eadweard Muybridge is both a film about cinematic history and a work of art in itself. 1975; 60 min. With commentary by Festival Director Albert G. Nigrin. Friday- February 6-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8 El Mar Y Él – Tony Méndez (Miami, Florida) An irrepressible comedy about a man's quest to flee Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift. Havana, Cuba, 1980. Fidel Castro opens the floodgates for Cuban emigrants to leave the country, giving priority to criminals and the mentally insane. This was the beginning of the Mariel Boatlift, an event that would change the lives of 125,000 Cubans and forever change the United States' immigration policies. After finding out that his wife is pregnant, Ricardo realizes that this is no place to raise a child and comes up with a plan to leave the country with the 'marielitas.' Then everything goes awry. In Spanish, subtitled. 2014; 23 min. (Fishing) – Tian Zheng (Shandong, China) This beautiful and insightful documentary focuses on Chinese fishermen and their families. Thousands of fishermen have moved from Sichuan to Shazikou since the 1980s to take advantage of the fishing there but due to overfishing life in the area is rapidly changing. The film focuses on the families of two of these fishermen and provides an eye-opening glimpse into their lives. In Mandarin, subtitled. 2014, 52 min. Co-sponsored by the Rutgers University Centers for Global Advancement and International Affairs (GAIA Centers) and the Confucius Institute of Rutgers University! Saturday-- February 7-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8 The Mural - Francisco Guijarro (San Francisco, California) This short documentary film follows several artists with developmental disabilities as they work together to paint a wall that aims to erase barriers. 2014; 20 min. Girls' Show - David Krantz (New York, New York) In most American high schools, the biggest event of the year is the homecoming football game, or prom, or graduation, but for the community of Passaic Valley, NJ, nothing is bigger than Girls' Show. The one-night-only annual event is an high-energy-higher-stakes competition in categories like dance and cheerleading with the whole community watching. Every year, the residents of Passaic Valley face one decision: whether to cheer for White or Green at Girls' Show. The rivalry dates back to the 1940’s, long before the fight for women's equality in athletics found a voice. Girls were banned from school sports, and Girls' Show was created as a forward-thinking symbol of equality. For this community, Girls' Show is bigger than the Superbowl and this fine documentary does an excellent job of showing us why. 2014; 68 min. With an introduction and Q+A session by Producer Rebecca Atwood and members of the crew TBA! Sunday-February 8-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8 Doug's Christmas - Calvin Steinken (Chicago, Illinois) Christmas Day 1951: Doug survives a Korean War battle where his friend, Kim, was killed. Kim's dying words, mixed with his passing on Christmas Day, still haunt Doug. Searching for answers, Doug meets a struggling young mother and her two daughters. The love of this young family inspires Doug to find meaning in his life. 2014; 25 min. Wildlike - Frank Hall Green (New York, New York) WildLike is a moving feature film that focuses on two strangers who cross paths in the wilderness of the Alaskan frontier. Mackenzie, portrayed by Ella Purnell (Never Let Me Go), is sent to live in Alaska with her uncle (Brian Geraghty, The Hurt Locker). When their relationship becomes tense, Mackenzie decides to run away. On her own, she has difficulties finding her way back to her mother in Seattle, and begins to follow a lonely backpacker, played by Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek: Into Darkness). The Knock Knock Game turns any doorway into a doorway to the hereafter but there are rules that should never be broken. 2014; 13 min. With an introduction and Q+A session by Director Jeff Betancourt! Expressway To Your Skull - Michael Okum (Glendale, California) A gripping horror film, Expressway To Your Skull tells the story of Ed and Amy, a thrill-seeking couple whose impulsive trip to the woods leads them to cross paths with a psychotic survivalist who lives in a twisted world all his own. 2014; 83 min. Sunday- February 15-Voorhees Hall #105-7PM $10; $9; $8 Frank and Franklin - Adam Egizi (Montclair, New Jersey) Frank is looking for more than what he has. That is, if he can keep track of his building pile of made- up life events and experiences. 2014; 15 min. Narcissist - Eric Casaccio (West Hollywood, California) Narcissist is the story of a kind soul (Evan) who attracts a dark knight (Rob) into his life. It's almost as it's meant to be until Rob goes from a charming man to a manipulative individual who smashes Evan’s heart into a million pieces. Evan's post-traumatic stress ends up taking him to a place of truth while Rob spirals into his own midlife crisis. Sometimes one must experience darkness to find a true authentic light.2014; 17 min. Thursday-February 26-Ruth Adams Bldg. #001-6PM $10/$9/$8 Films by Stan Brakhage Stan Brakhage is one of the most important figures in 20th-century American experimental film. Over the course of five decades, he explored a variety of formats, approaches, and techniques that included hand-held camerawork; painting directly onto celluloid; fast cutting; in-camera editing; scratching on film; and the use of multiple exposures. Tête-à-Tête (Head to Head) – Lisa Resnick (Summit, New Jersey) An illuminating portrayal of the intellectual connection between French philosophers Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre and their vow of essential love. Tête-à-Tête explores the period when Beauvoir, 21, and Sartre, 23, met while preparing for a national philosophy exam. De Beauvoir was a committed intellectual who was happiest writing, often in cafes. As a couple, Beauvoir and Sartre became legendary. They never married, did not live under the same roof, and had an open relationship. They lived what was and would still be an unconventional lifestyle. Shot on location in Paris. 2014; 16 min. SURVING ME: THE 9 CIRCLES OF SOPHIE - Leah Yananton (Bethesda, Maryland) A young coed struggles to find herself amidst an allegorical journey of Dante's Inferno.
