2. GENRE: ROCK
MUSIC VIDEOS
For this task, I have studied
the music videos “Thanks
for the Memories” by Fall
Out Boy, “Decode” by
Paramore, “21 Guns” by
Green Day and “The Ghost
of You” by My Chemical
Romance.
3. GENRE: ROCK
NARRATIVE, CONCEPT OR
PERFORMANCE-BASED?
I have observed that most of the
videos are dominantly
performance based. Most of the
videos also have a narrative or a
strong narrative. The only video
that used a concept was
“Decode” by Paramore which was
inspired by the film “Twilight”.

DESCRIPTION OF LOCATION OR SETTING
– Camera Works, Editing and Lighting
The location of most music videos are
set in a low key lighting. Most of the
videos have serious themes into it. Also,
the colour ranges of the video have a
dull and dark atmosphere – almost as if
like a Catharsis. The most noticeable
camera shot is a low angle medium
shot or a long shot and this shows how
there is a boundary between the artist
and the audience. However,
occasionally, there are some close up
shot and this breaks down the wall
between the artist and audience. Also,
one music video “The Ghost Of You”
used the tone of sepia as it was set in
the time period of World War II. This is to
create the atmosphere of antiquity.
5. GENRE: ROCK
THE ARTIST’S STAR IMAGE
The costume of the bands were
always very dark and dull in
colour with the colour scheme of
black, rouge and blue.
Also, there is not a heavy make
up but some of the bands
emphasised the black eye liner.
This make up is typical in rock
bands as it is rebellious and very
edgy.
6. GENRE: POP
MUSIC VIDEOS
For this task, I have studied
the music videos “Live While
We’re Young” by One
Direction, “California Girls” by
Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dog,
“Really Don’t Care” by Demi
Lovato ft. Cher Lloyd and
“22” by Taylor Swift.
7. GENRE: POP
NARRATIVE, CONCEPT OR
PERFORMANCE-BASED?
I have observed that most of the
videos are both concept and
performance based. The concept of
the videos are generally about
having fun and partying. In general,
the target audience of these music
videos would be female and male at
the age range of 13-25 years. One
video “California Gurls” were based
mostly on the concept as it was
centred on Katy on a Candy Land.

DESCRIPTION OF LOCATION OR
SETTING – Camera Works, Editing
and Lighting
The location of most music videos
are set in a high key lighting or
ambient lighting. The camera
works that were most noticeable
were medium to close up shots
and this is to establish the
connection between the artists
and the audience. One of the
videos which relied on the
ambient lighting was “22” as it
was set in a very sunny day, on a
beach and outside the house.
9. GENRE: POP
THE ARTIST’S STAR IMAGE
The costume of the artists were very
vibrant and lively. Some were casual
and some used their concept as an
inspiration for their costumes.
The make up of the artists are quite
heavy, especially for the girls and
the make up emphasises their lip
colour.
However, in “Really Don’t Care”,
Demi and Cher’s costumes were
dark in colour as it reflect the theme
of the song which centred on a
rebellious atmosphere.
10. GENRE: RNB
MUSIC VIDEOS
For this task, I have studied the
music videos “Umbrella” by
Rihanna ft. JAY-Z, “Because of
You” by Ne-yo, “No Air” by Jordin
Sparks and Chris Brown and
“Pyramid” by Charice ft. Iyaz.
11. GENRE: RNB
NARRATIVE, CONCEPT OR
PERFORMANCE-BASED?
I have observed that most of the
videos are dominantly
performance based with dance
routines. Most of the videos also
have narratives embedded and
some have concept. For
example, in “Umbrella”, it was
mostly performance-based and
concept-based with dance
routines.

DESCRIPTION OF LOCATION OR
SETTING – Camera Works, Editing and
Lighting
The location of most music videos are
set in a high key lighting. Almost of
the videos are set in the studio and
some videos rely on artificial lighting.
The camera work that is most
noticeable is a long shot, medium
shot to close up shot. The long shot,
especially for few female artists were
used to show and keep the focus on
their body.
The video “Pyramid”, the
performance was set on stage as the
narrative is about failing and
achieving one’s dreams.
13. GENRE: RNB
THE ARTIST’S STAR IMAGE
The costume of the artists were
casual, and usually dark in colour.
Some of the clothes were also
designer labelled.
As for the make-up, most of the
artists have heavy make up,
especially the women.
Also, most of the women in the RnB
scene are presented in a very
provocative and submissive way –
treated as a “material” for men.
