3. SUMMARY OF VIDEO CONTENT
In the clip we can see an office worker by the name of Dwight
become very concerned about an anxiety pill he had found. From
this clip we see outlined, common misconceptions about mental
illness and see symptoms of not just anxiety but of a Generalized
Anxiety Disorder.
Some of the common misconceptions Dwight infers about the
“madman in our midst,” are that the person is crazy and is a danger
to the office.
We also see Dwight towards the end of the clip state that he has
symptoms of anxiety and/or an anxiety disorder.
4. PSYCHOLOGICAL BASIS
Anxiety is described as a feeling of
worry, apprehensiveness, unease or
nervousness typically about an
impending event or something
with an uncertain outcome.
Anxiety is a NORMAL BODILY
RESPONSE
5. HOWEVER,
There is a big difference between the occasional
feeling of apprehension and worry surrounding a
typical stressful time in a person’s life and the
overall and constant worry that can coincide an
anxiety disorder.
6. GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER
Definition: a chronic state of severe worry and tension, often without
provocation.
Without provocation is a key term:
Meaning individuals who are having symptoms of anxiety are having these
symptoms regardless of if stressors are common in their life.
Sometimes people who feel anxiety all the time, may come up with
“excuses,,” as to why they are feeling this way such as Dwight telling Nelly
all the things in his life that may be causing him all his stress.
7. PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF
GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER
THE CONSTANT FEELING OF
Rapid heartbeat
Overthinking
Insomnia
Digestive upset
Panic
Lack of Patience
Fear
8. CONNECTION TO PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY
There is a large connection between the scene presented with
Dwight and psychological theory.
Primarily, the way Dwight describes feeling of anxiety “all the
time,” which is a symptom of generalized anxiety disorder.
Also how Nelly describes to Dwight that having and dealing with
a mental illness in a productive way, such as through medication
is completely normal and can make him feel better.
We also see the commonality of mental illnesses such as anxiety.
9. CONNECTION TO PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY
Also, we see throughout the clip, the common and great misrepresentation of
mental illness.
Dwight assumes that someone who has anxiety and is being treated for anxiety is crazy
or a danger to others when in fact most violent crimes are perpetrated onto an
individual who has a mental illness and not the other way around.
Another misconception is that if a person has a mental illness that they are out of
touch with reality. We can see this assumption in action by Dwight’s action of rubbing
peanut butter on his face to test Darrell to see if was “crazy,” and the one who was
taking the anxiety pill.
