1. Welcome to the first edition of KTP
Connect, a newsletter to keep
Associates, academics and
businesses informed about KTP.
At Queen’s, KTP is just one of the
many ways the Research &
Enterprise Directorate at the
University develops relationships
with businesses.
Queen’s is ranked No. 1 in the UK
for participation in KTP with 36
current active projects across the
University, more than any other UK
institution.
Queen’s has had more than 350
KTPs with companies, mostly but
not exclusively in Northern Ireland,
involving over 300 graduates
employed as KTP Associates. We
have won 11 National Awards to
date and are in the running for an
unprecedented 3 categories in this
year’s competition. These Awards
are national recognition of the
difference Queen’s makes to
businesses every day through KTP.
The role my team plays in bringing
researchers & companies together
produces great benefits for the
University. We see the results of
our academic research being
translated to impact and advancing
the success of local business and
we see employment opportunities
opening up for graduates – a win-
win for everybody. We understand
our Northern Ireland economy and
are making significant impact on it.
It’s absolutely vital to sustain and
grow our economy that companies
are able to innovate, and
collaborations with the University
are essential for that.
Although 20 years in post, every
year my job has been different and
challenging. In my early years,
KTP and other business
collaboration activities were not an
academic priority, but now with the
growing importance of the research
impact agenda, we’re part of
something that’s become vital for
Queen’s.
It is our hope that KTP Connect will
help you stay connected.

2. KTP Challenge: Agri-Food
2
Universities around the UK are participating in “National
KTP Week” from 3-7 November 2014 to raise awareness
for the KTP programme to students, academics and
companies. As the UK’s leading institution for KTP, we
are keen to make our event the best in the nation! With a
special celebration in store, KTP at QUB will make it rain
with candy galore!
That’s right, we will carry out an
Apprentice-style task: the “KTP Sweet
Shop” on Monday, 3rd November. The
challenge will see our KTP Associates
divided into competing teams, provided
with packets of vintage sweets (branded
with KTP) to sell around Queen’s candy-
wonderland campus. Raffle tickets will
also be sold for a chance to win a vintage candy pack!
The aim of the event is to give our KTP Associates a
business-related task, but more importantly, to educate
our students about the valuable career opportunities
offered through the KTP programme; and, the profits will
be donated to Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI!
Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI
supports leukaemia research taking
place with the Haematology
Research Group at the Centre for
Cancer Research and Cell Biology
in Queen’s University Belfast, as
well as at Belfast City Hospital. The
organisation is a member of the
Association of Medical Research
Charifities (AMRC) - and, the only charity in Northern
Ireland that is dedicated to fighting Leukaemia and
Lymphoma. Every day three people are diagnosed with
a blood cancer. We hope that our contribution will help
provide support for further research to find a cure.

The KTP community has been challenged to help
diminish commercial risk, improve business
performance and ensure overall growth of the agri-food
supply chain and sectors. As an incentive, Innovate
UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board), the
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
(Defra), the Scottish Funding Council, the Welsh
Government and Invest Northern Ireland will divide
combined funds of £2.3 million amongst 25
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.
Invest NI hosted a networking and brokering event in
August at CAFRE's Loughry campus—at which KTP at
QUB attended and participated with a display stand.
In order to be
considered to
receive funding,
KTPs must
apply and
provide
proposals of
projects that
will: “1) innovate
to benefit
consumer health, wellbeing and choice; 2) improve
productivity, resource efficiency and resilience in the
supply chain; and/or 3) assure safety and security
across the supply chain.”

The Agri-Food industry is important to
our local economy and there are major
global business opportunities waiting to
be grasped. Through collaboration with
our academic communities to access
knowledge & expertise, companies can
position themselves for faster growth. We
are about the development of innovative
products & processes, improving the
safety, quality & authenticity of supply
chains and linking our agriculture & food
graduates with local industry. KTP is the
perfect vehicle for this.

KTP offers an opportunity to be a part of
any latest research and put it into practice by
transferring & applying that research in software
company. It’s really exciting to learn from the
academic supervisors and as well as the company
you get to work with.
I’m looking forward to get my programming skills
polished, learn team work, try and achieve goals by
working in collaboration with other colleagues and
most importantly learn to manage time.

opportunities to gain accolades & recognition for
the dedicated work carried out in the project.
You are continually meeting new people and other

diverse industry disciplines. This helps in forming
key relationships & offers valuable networking
opportunities which will similarly benefit the
acceleration of your KTP Project in addition to your
future career in industry.
The work I am carrying out in Smiths Engineering
will help develop my knowledge of, and ability to
