Who I Am
I’m a versatile communications professional with strong writing skills and extensive experience in design
and social media. I possess traditional journalism skills such as writing, copy editing and page design, and
have expanded that knowledge to digital forms of expression such as blogging, social media engagement and
website content management. My skill set is well adapted to the many avenues for people to communicate.
What I’ve Done
From 1988, when I was hired at The Elkhart Truth, Elkhart, Ind., as a part-time sports clerk, I’ve held a
broad range of roles in the newsroom. I’ve written news articles about everything from police news and
politics to consumer business and in-depth profiles. I was promoted to assistant editorial page editor, which
included duties such as copy editing and opinion writing.
When I was promoted to copy desk chief in 2007, I gained additional skills in project planning, publication
design and typography. I also learned to manage a diverse staff of copy editors/page designers. In this role
I’ve helped develop coverage plans for major community events.
As news editor since fall 2013, I have also supervised reporters and news coverage. As part of The Elkhart
Truth newsroom’s senior management, I have played a direct role in using analytics to manage The Truth’s
website and news coverage and to develop strategies to better engage audiences on social media channels
from Facebook to Twitter to Google+ and YouTube.
What I Can Do
I can manage, direct and lead a staff, and plan major projects. I am comfortable determining the best media
-- words, visuals, video or audio -- for each project. I can write compelling news and feature articles on any
topic. I can design attractive presentations for print. I’m proficient at using InDesign, Photoshop and InCopy
from the Adobe Creative Suite. I am well versed in social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Storify
and Instagram to engage online audiences. I can take and edit photos.
Where I’ve Excelled
In April 2012, I won The Elkhart Truth’s newsroom staffer of the year award. I won third place for best
headline writing in The Truth’s division in the 2008 Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors newspaper
contest. The same year, I also received The Truth’s Newsboy Award, presented annually to the company’s
employee of the year. I’ve participated in numerous professional development programs, most notably a
one-week course at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va. I’ve also served as a judge in the Suburban
Newspaper Association’s design contest.
What I’ve Learned
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Indiana University, Bloomington. Besides
professional development, I also attended the one-week MidWest Leadership School, a leadership
development and spiritual growth program for Unitarian Universalists, in 2013. I was then selected for a
three-year tenure on the school’s staff.
