CONNEXION
Dear Wesley Freedom Family,
Since my sabbatical was announced, I’ve had several people ask
me what I was going to do during this time off. First of all, I’m very
grateful to the leadership of Wesley Freedom for granting me this
renewal leave. My primary objectives are rest, renewal and self-
growth. My goal is to grow my own spiritual self, so I can be more
effective growing the church.
I’ve been working with a pastoral coach and spiritual director to
develop a plan for my time away. During my first two weeks I will
be reading the historic prayers of the Christian tradition and my
favorite theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I will then immerse myself
in the spiritual disciplines that make up our Discipleship Pathway;
prayer, scripture, worship, community, gifts, mission, witness and
grace. Some of this will take place during my 10-day pilgrimage to
England, as I study the spiritual disciplines that shaped the lives of
John and Charles Wesley and thus the Methodist Movement. I will
also be touring the sites of note to their lives and ministries. This
renewal leave will also give me a chance to spend time with my
family, help my parents adjust to their new home in Lancaster PA
and visit one of my brothers in Chicago.
I am so encouraged by the support of Rev. Elizabeth, our staff and
lay leadership. I am confident and excited by the ministries and
worship that will take place in my absence.
I will be praying for you this summer and request prayers for my
time off, as well.
Peace and Joy,
Rev. Bill (aka the Running Rev.)

Sharing the Story of God’s Grace through Witness
By Sharon Feldman
A group of Wesley Freedom’s “church
ladies”, who call themselves Friday Friends,
meet each Friday morning at Martin’s Café.
These ladies have been meeting for a
number of years to study scripture, pray for
each other, pray for others and just enjoy
good conversation all while enjoying
Starbuck’s coffee.
On this particular Friday, a gentleman
approached them and said, “I see you’re
doing a Bible Study, can I join you?” he said
jokingly. He went on to comment that to
have a study in such a public place is
awesome. The group explained that they
usually have a devotion they study, they’re
currently using the Upper Room, and have a
short discussion ending with prayer
concerns.
Before leaving he just had to make another stop. He told them “You are amazing and I prayed
for you.” In return they asked if he had any prayer concern they could lift up on his behalf. He
told them he was leaving on a train to visit his family in NJ and would love to have them pray
for his trip.
We have an opportunity to witness everyday just by our actions – Hebrews 13:2 tells us, “Do
not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels
without knowing it.”

Run for God
By Laura Cline
The “Run for God” Bible study group started meeting weekly and training
for a 5K back in February. The group met weekly to discuss how that
week of training was going and to tackle various running related topics.
Some running topics included warming-up, stretching, nutrition, proper
footwear, race etiquette, motivation, music and other gear. In addition to
the running topic covered, there was a weekly Bible lesson related to the
topic of running and training. They committed to working hard for 12
weeks and recently ran in the Celtic Canter 5K at Eldersburg Elementary
on May 14th. Their hard work and dedication throughout the training pro-
cess paid off when everyone was able to exceed their expectations and
for many, completed their FIRST 5K!!!
Congratulations to the entire group!

Dog and cat toys have been made, catnip is
growing nicely, notecards have been designed,
and we even have artwork that has been
painted. All of this has been created by our
3rd
, 4th
and 5th
graders who are involved in the
mission work of Kids Creating Kindness. All of
which will be sold at the Sykesville Farmers
“Junior” Market on Sunday, June 26th
from
9:00am until 1:00pm. It was their idea to do
something for animals and decided that all of
their proceeds from that day will go to the
Humane Society of
Carroll County.
We will be doing this again on August 28th
and
October 23rd
. Each market day will have new
items that will be crafted and sold and will
have a different organization that will benefit
from our work.
If you would like to join us and would like
more information please contact Sharon
Feldman at sfeldman@wesleyfreedom.org or

Tribute to Bettina Wesloh
By: Lynda Whilhelm
2016 UMW Annual Dinner, June 1
Every year the UMW at Wesley Freedom
gives a Special Mission Recognition pin to
a woman who has demonstrated
outstanding service in the area of
Missions. Along with a special pin, a
donation is given to the Conference UMW
Missions in honor of this person’s efforts.
This year we feel blessed to be able to
honor Bettina Wesloh for her outstanding
contributions in the area of missions.
I first met Bettina through Daniel and
Matthew in youth group and Confirmation
class, but I didn’t get to know Bettina till I
started working with UMW. Bettina, has
been VP and President of UMW, and is a
member of our UMW leadership team.
Among other things, Bettina has
advocated for women's rights and the
prevention of human trafficking. She
helped start and co-chair God’s Servants,
which continues to do mission work
opportunities.
I know Bettina crochets and knits, and is
the co-leader of the Prayer Shawl group.
A few years ago she started working with
B-More Bags from the House of Ruth. She
and Michele Rogers co-chaired the 2015
Silent Auction for the Christmas Bazaar.
She is also on the Board of Trustees for
the church, she sings alto in the choir and
has helped to organize the Cleaning Buck-
ets donation for UMCOR two different
times.
Bettina has a Masters of Library and Infor-
mation Science (MLIS) from Drexel
University. She has worked at Carroll and
Howard County Library systems.
Bettina was recognized in May and June
2014 as a distinguished community leader
and received the Leader of Excellence
Award from the Girl Scouts USA. In a
statement from Rep. Chris Van Hollen,
he states, “Mrs. Wesloh has been a
mentor for pre-teen and teen girls in Girl
Scout Troop 1379”. She has motivated
these girls to continue in scouting and
inspired them to participate in outstanding
community service activities, including
making 75 blankets for Project Linus, for
which the troop earned the Silver Award.
As the members of the troop work toward
earning their Gold Awards, Mrs. Wesloh
continues to advise and assist the girls.
She also takes the time to advise inde-
pendent girl scouts who are not members
of Troop 1379.
Mrs. Wesloh also serves as a mentor for
the Robo-Lions FRC Team 2199 Robotics
Team, assisting the students with public
relations and business projects. She has
been instrumental in organizing field trips
for the students and fundraising drives to
support science, technology, and
engineering and mathematics initiatives.
Under her mentorship, the team won two
Entrepreneurship Awards and the
Regional Chairman's Award, which is
considered the highest award a team can
win at a regional FIRST robotics competi-
tion. In fact, Mrs. Wesloh is so passionate
about the importance of STEM education
that she is a founding director of PIE3, a
non-profit organization that supports
STEM education and activities in and
around Carroll County, Maryland. Mrs.
Wesloh is also a substitute teacher for the
Carroll County Public Schools.”

Thanks to your generosity, Wesley Freedom's 2016 Relay For Life team has cur-
rently raised $5,882 for the American Cancer Society. Whether you donated at
our table in the gathering area, on-line, attended paint night, purchased a lumi-
nary bag or garden lantern, YOU helped make WFUMC a gold team (>$5K
raised) once again! The event held on June 4th-5th was a success. We were
grateful for beautiful weather and the many friends who came to walk with our
team. If you'd like to donate to fight cancer, it's not too late. Please visit

Next Steps
Grab a cup of coffee and join the Adult
Table Talk session
If you are new to Bible Study or if your small
group is taking the summer off and you
would like to continue to stay in God’s Word,
we have a place for you at Table Talk. We will
gather in the Community Life Center at
9:45am each Sunday morning for coffee and
casual conversation.
Beginning June 19th
and continuing for six
weeks, the sermon emphasis will be “When
Life Is Unfair: The Story of Job”. Our table talk
will discuss topics such as strength, ques-
tions, pain and friends. Then beginning on
July 31st
and continuing for six weeks the
sermon emphasis will be on 2 Corinthians;
where topics and discussion will include
consolation, forgiveness, walking by faith not
by sight and much more.
We hope to create casual space where folks
can drop in on the weeks they are here,
either after the 8:30 service or prior to the 11
service, and share ideas, talk about what
challenges them and get an idea of what
small group community is like. You can just
come to listen or participate as you feel
comfortable. No need to register just show
up.
Adult Table Talk Session
The summer session of Next Steps begins Wednesday, June 22 at 7:00pm in
Room 201. This is a six-week small group class designed for those exploring the
Christian faith or church life at Wesley Freedom. If you are seeking membership,
we strongly encourage you begin here.
Register by contacting the church office 410-795-2777.
Childcare will be provided.
